I see no compelling reason to upgrade from my series 6, if all that is new is a slightly larger screen. I will gladly wait for next year.
Seems like you ought to know by now that year over year updates are not for people on the latest device. You post often enough to know this.

What I found most interesting is what they didn’t say. No new health features, and not once a mention of its processor. I can’t find any info of it anywhere either. Either they don’t even know what processor it will use due to supply constraints or it literally is just last years watch with a keyboard which sounds cool, but in practice who knows. I started with an S3, 3yrs later the S6, with a battery replacement down the road, I don’t think I’d end up getting a new watch until like Series 10 at this point.

Yeah, macrumors what processor it will run on?

On the fence for S7. I have s4, battery is still great. Has scratches but no cracks. I’m bummed they didn’t add the same scratch protection for the watch. Only dust. I mean with all those bicycle fall videos, I’m certain a scratch on the face would happen. 😏

When i watched the video on it , it was mentioned that it’s the strongest glass on the watch face they’ve had . What I want to know is what’s the best glass screen protector to get for apple watches ?

Really looking forward to this announcement, as the 4 I have needs to be charged at least twice a day — pain in the butt, imo. It lasted as long as 48 hours when new. Now it runs out of juice at night sometimes, when it is supposed to tracking sleep. Or while taking a walk. That sucks.

Was hoping for an option with no new sensors, or even fewer ones, to help battery life, but nope it is still rated at 18 hours, even w/o new sensors. Don’t know if I can suffer another year of charging this thing so often, and this isn’t a very compelling upgrade. Will be considering other companies’ offerings now. $600 or so for a watch that I have to replace every 3 years? Unacceptable.

I do not see it improving much over time, bc, really, the watch is tiny compared to a phone or iPad, and lacks enough space for a decent size battery, and it is being asked to do so many things we can’t turn off, so I may bail on Apple’s watch to something that lasts longer, until battery technology really improves.

Honestly you could take most smart watches and put them into that category with subpar battery . Only ones that have good battery life are the Garmin and the Fitbit . The Fitbit one still lacks compared to the Apple Watch. Most watches last 3 years anyways. I doubt they’ll ever make a watch that will last 5 plus years because apple would lose money from people not upgrading.

Nearly every rumored enhancement to the Apple Watch has turned out to be false.

No flat edge case.
No longer battery life.
No lower profile digital crown.

Pretty much a nothing burger. I might still end up having to get one since the battery life on my Series 4 has gotten pretty bad.
Same.

IMO the wraparound is a much better design than the flat-edged for a watch profile. I’m glad to see this and will definitely be buying it.

The flat edge design looked hideous for a watch, glad Apple abandoned it.

Seems like there might be evidence that Apple had to make a last minute pivot on the design of the S7. It even has the same chip as the S6.

Seems highly unlikely. I doubt Apple can swap out a design that quickly. For all we know the flat edge design was a prototype that they decided not to go with or maybe they leaked it to embarrass the leakers. To be honest I didn’t think the flat edge design looked that great. I sense some people liked it for no other reason than it was different.
I wish that were true. The different size screen, including how it bends, and the different radius of the case + how the glass integrates into it.... this IS the redesign. this isn't a quick "lets go back to a bubble" after production issues... this IS the redesign. even worse is apple ALWAYS wants a new physical design to last THREE YEARS to recover the costs of R&D on it. i fully expect the Series 7 / 8 / 9 to share this basic design with the only changes being sensors on the back or a brighter screen over time etc. If sales collapse you MIGHT see them move up a redesign by a single year, the Series 9, but thats unlikely.

I think we are stuck with at least 3 more years of this jelly bean shape. It's not that its bad... its just tired.

This is clearly a contingency design. It has the new display size and glass but in the body style of the previous watches. Apple prototypes all sorts of design styles so it’s not a stretch that this was one they prototyped and had shelved.

It’s a quick and safe design that they know they can quickly put into production. Production leaks are always months behind what is happening so the time table isn’t that insane to say that they scrapped the redesign for what we saw today.

There is enough evidence out there that this very plausible. Someone already linked to the 9to5Mac article covering a lot of it. This Series 7 is NOT the original series 7 that Apple wanted to launch. If they can solve the rumored production problems I bet we will see the actual redesign next year with the Series 8.

Do they ever compare previous models or just the current line up?

Still rocking my series 2 stainless. It still looks pristine, battery life holds up longer than a day and it does the three primary functions just fine: tells time, tracks fitness and Apple Pay works.
I’m not sure what about this can compel me to upgrade?

You’re BOTh forgetting faster charging times on the S7, which maybe more significant than the charging time on the S6 is to all previous models which I’m happy about with my S6.

USB-C cable may have something to do with it vs the charging puck but I’ll probably won’t bother getting one to test first hand.

I jumped from an S4 Nike+ to an S6 Nike+ both were 45mm and it feels like the S6 was smaller in screen size vs the S4.

I’m curious if the S7 will feel larger than the S5/S6?

I have a hope the S8 will offer SS and Hermes models in distinct 47/48:52mm models for larger screens and significant battery improvements.

Why no new CPU’s … this seems worse than the S4 when they replaced the S3 with the S4 chip and resold it adding great value.

something tells me a LOT of the R&D went into software for the iPhones and majorly into the upcoming MBP’s!!
Last year had a pretty big bump in chip and I think the S5 actually skipped new chip as well.

My S4 still feels very snappy though, so it should be great this one! Waiting for the pre-orders to start to jump on a SS S7 - Let's go!

If those three things is all you care about: Keep your S2 - sounds like it's in great condition.

I went from the S2 to S4 and felt a massive upgrade - your swap here will feel even more amazing in speed, features and design/screen.

Does anyone else think it is odd that Apple is selling accessories for the S7 when it won't be released until "this Fall" (whatever that means). I know the bands can be used with older Apple Watches but it still seems odd.

Article does not mention: a) more durable (thicker) glass b) faster charging c) 70% brighter indoors when your wrist is down. So, a no-good article. Still, additional or improved health features (sensors) would have been needed to make a substantial update. But very nice to have the Watch 7 improvements in the bag for next year's model (I still have a 4).

Selling the S3 is literally a crime at this point, feel bad for the non-techy mom's out there.
There is literally nothing wrong with an S3 in 2021. It's a perfectly capable smart watch. Buy the SE over it, sure. But as a device itself it has everything you need in a smart watch – including battery life.
