Can’t believe this the newest feature they lead with. I get it, but still you just eliminated 1/2 of your market.
Considering people can go deaf or have permanent damage in a car crash JUST from the pressure caused by a car's glass shattering, match this with Watch's already affect Noise Alert and suppression with use with AirPods Pro/Beats Fit Pro's .... it's a smart choice.
But they just got 1/2 the market. Crash detection should get the remaining half.
Indeed, and agreed.
Interesting. Thinking seriously about AW8.
You and me both ... on second thought ...
So much technology embedded in this Apple Watch. It's crazy!
That's why its an instant buy for me. Glad I sold my AWN+ S6 early summer. S8 here I come!

FYI if you are thinking of upgrading to the new Apple Watch Series 8, here’s a comprehensive list of when its features were added. I made this myself by reviewing the technical specs for each generation and compared it to the list of features enumerated for the Series 8. It may not be perfect; please correct me if I’m wrong.View attachment 2052878
Cycle tracking with Ovulation was added with S6 btw. It's software not hardware implemented.

But wait a minute ... you mean ALL S8 models will have 'The body temperature sensor' ?? Why when its focused on Women ... can a man with an S8 have the choice to disable this sensor to saved even miniscule battery life? Please?!

That’s correct! Thanks for pointing that out! I think you don’t even need an Apple Watch to use this feature in the iPhone Health app, though. The new feature to the 8, I believe, is the retrospective ovulation estimates using the new temperature sensor, in my understanding of what was said today. I could be wrong, however.

Ah you are correct on that retrospective ovulation estimates using body temperature.

I recall back on Nokia S60 days that Ovulation tracking app was a BIG thing, so rudimentary of course.

Maybe I'm missing something big but how useful is retrospective ovulation reporting really? Isn't the idea to know ideally before or at least during? If you only know later, it doesn't seem that useful. Or does retrospective mean something different in this context?

One thing I HATE about Apple is their propensity to totally remove previous models with pricier 'new' models that come in different colours/designs that total eliminate choice. I really liked the look of the dark green model last year with the green leather strap but couldn't quite justify the cost. Figured it may come down in price a bit this year or they have the new model but retain the colour as an option... as ever, no luck. You are effectively forced to chose the more expensive versions to even get a simple colour change... and the green isn't even one of them anymore!!!

Men have a temperature don’t they, this or future software versions could add illness or fever detection. Show that they are getting too cold if they are exploring or more.

The watch still monitors your temperature regardless of sex so it’s by no means useless and I’m sure will add new functionality with new software releases. For me it could be watch OS 9.2 offers new features and 10 even more only available to the AW8 and above.

We shall see.

Nice list! Probably not worth listing the S8 processor since it's so similar to S7 and S6.

One of the headline new features of the Series 8 is a new body temperature sensor designed for women's health purposes, such as knowing when ovulation has occurred.
Does Apple really believe that a woman doesn't know? Lol I beleive Apple Watch 9 will allow a man to know when he is e***t. Just Say'n!

The temperature sensor is cool I guess and fantastic for younger women. Be good if it could do more and alert you if your tempratures is consistent with coming down with a cold or the spicy-cough. I was hoping for a blood sugar sensor that would be a game changer for so many people. Still years away from a non-invasive blood sugar sensor.

As a diver, I am very intrigued by the Apple watch Ultra. If they could make it talk to an Airpod (a device that sits on your regulators to measure your gas consumption wirelessly), they would have just killed the dive watch industry. I dare say the Garmin, Oceanic, and Sunnto's of the world are having a brown underwear day today. But there are still many dive computers (a.k.a most of them) that don't have a pod connecting feature. In that case, they have killed off all the lower and mid-priced dive computer models of most companies.

Still, it's only 40m, so free/apnea and technical divers won't like it. But recreational SCUBA divers which do not go below 40m will be fine. Mind you I would not like to push a life support system to its maximum rated depth. The deepest I have ever been been is ~35m.

I have some questions as to its features. Will it lock you out of your dive functionality if you exceed your limits like alot of dive computers? Can it do Nitrox? What dive algorithm standards does it use? Does it calculate your surface interval times and No-fly times? Will it have dive model settings as to your conservatism? So many questions.

Anyway, pumped for this. If it does the above (minus the pod) It will be great for traveling and doing the odd dive without having to take my normal dive computer.

It's disgraceful that this product is still being sold at the same price a Series 4 was four years ago. The innovation, or lack there of' does not support the price tag.

It remains the best selling smartwatch so I guess the consumers for the most part disagree with you.

Wondering if a third party dev can leverage the new temp sensor to make an app that works for genders that ovulate and genders that don’t ovulate.

Great joy to me. The word "thyroid" was mentioned in relation to temperature (though from memory, specifically in relation to period issues). I very much hope that this is a move towards being able to recognise and monitor thyroid issues other than with blood tests. The simple fact that this implies effectively continuous monitoring could be a huge plus.

However, the cost of the 8 is high - especially with the poor exchange value of the GBP. £449 for the bottom 45mm model.

Despite wanting an 8 for this feature more than anything else, I thought I'd check 7 prices. Amazed to find it possible to get a GPS+Cellular at a very slightly lower price than a GPS model (45mm green) at one retailer:

Starting at £379.99
Shipping Included
Apple Watch Series 7 GPS + Cellular, 45mm Aluminium Case with Sport Band

£383.98
Shipping Included
Apple Watch Series 7 GPS, 45mm Aluminium Case with Sport Band

I think I'd probably get an Apple refurb at £339. But thought the drop in price worth a minor comment.

It means they are doing their job as a publicly traded company, to make as much profit as possible. Whether you, or I or anyone likes it.

Thanks for the business 101 introduction, I'm not disputing what their ambition is.

I'm saying the progression of this product does not justify the price tag attached. And that is wrong.

I don't know how useful it is ... I don't ovulate, not ever, never have. just was noting the timeline of hardware/software implementation that's all.
