....for the iWatch to work you NEED an iPhone - but you also need to charge the iWatch EVERYday!

You need to charge an iPhone pretty much every day too, in most cases.

Also, the other smart watches need another device to work too. Android Wear needs Android devices. Pebble needs iOS or Android devices. Or are you stuck comparing a smart watch to a watch?! Which is like comparing using a phone to using telegrams....

And then someone will come along and create a portable battery pack shaped like a wristband that either replaces the watches wristband OR you wear separately like a bracelet.

Relax, was an attempt at humour.

So MR should just be for people who bought an apple product??? lol ....

welcome to be Internet , and forums to be specific, fans of products troll each other . You don't think Apple fans troll android or windows sites???

At the end of the day it pays the bills for MR as it generates it's revenue from ads, hence they even bait the users with stories that generate debate, samsung and windows news for instance.

You might want to try the official apple discussion boards..... It's all about apple there, maybe you will feel more at home ?

Since I actually am an Android and Windows user, and I do post on several dedicated forums, I can confirm you that's not even close to what you can see here.
Here there are people fighting an holy war against Apple on basically every thread. And they sometimes put a couple of Apple's devices in their signature to pretend to be "objective" Apple's users. Lol.

if somehow it does make money - it'll be an exercise in the gullible rather than turning lead into gold.

sorry

Molly Wood of Cnet had a similar opinion of the iPad back in January 2010...

"I added it up and … like 800 people are going to buy the iPad. . . . It’s not that the iPad is a failure. It’s just a product ahead of its time. No one should actually buy this iPad — between its inevitable first-generation bugs, fulfillment problems, and buyer’s remorse over added features and price drops, it’s heartbreak waiting to happen."

...and yet it's still surprising to me, how willing some people are to display their dearth of imagination.

It just shows you how many tech writes (and posters on here) actually know so little about what makes a good product and will sell. If they DID, they would not be tech writers but instead be rich beyond their imagination as they can predict human behavior and business success.

I imagine a person looking intensely at their wrist for 5 hours a day will be rare.

Although, on second thought, I see plenty of smartphone users in this category. ;)

----------

Five hours of use at less than 10 secs per use at what interval, every hour, half hour, what is it? Seem very restrictive.

If you use it for 10 seconds at a time that would be 1,800 times to reach 5 hours of usage. :)

----------

And then someone will come along and create a portable battery pack shaped like a wristband that either replaces the watches wristband OR you wear separately like a bracelet.

I'll bet there is more than one in the works already. :)

No one that buys Apple Watch Edition are thinking of functionality and value. Apple is targeting the same people that buy $20k Rolexes every other year. Those same people all carry phones and probably check the time on their phones more than their watch. The only time you check time on your Rolex is when you want someone to see you check time on your Rolex.

Living in the center of the watch industry's biggest sales, I see Rolexes every day, and I work with people who don't have to think twice before buying a decent Rolex or even Piaget. The impression that multi-millionaires mindlessly throw money away reflects a stereotype of the modern wealthy; it just isn't the case for that many of the richest class to be so frivolous. (so-called "Rich kids of Instagram" is a very small population of the wealthy few) On the other hand, while they can afford it, purchases of fine jewelry represents investments in something that is essentially timeless (excuse the pun). Apple has made a bold move fusing digital tech and jewelry and it's sooner than too soon to even consider the potential. However, the common millionaires who regularly make purchases as investments, the ones who really collect watches, will likely pass on Apple Watch because it's not classical. I personally think people don't realize how much little use an Apple Watch would be to the wealthiest among us. When they make a tech fashion statement it's not with an iPhone, it's with a Vertu dumb phone. The richest among us have people to take care of their email, and they have personal trainers monitoring their health, and they can afford to hire a specialist for just about everything.

That's all a charging power issue. I fly large RC helis (no quadcopter, regular old helicopters) and battery packs are charged within 13 minutes, no matter what the capacity. It does take a quite expensive 2000W charger though... can't run it full power with the stove on. :p
You won't believe how quickly the iPhone charges with the 2.1A charger and the cable that supports that charge current.

I kinda wish you could charge the apple watch while it's still on your wrist. You know, for tracking your sleep, vibrating your wrist to wake you up, calling an ambulance via your phone if you're having a heart attack. I don't mind a little cable hooked up to my arm. You're all wired up when doing sleep tracking in a hospital anyway.

Yeah, the interesting thing with my mini drone is that it doesn't charge any faster when the USB cable is plugged into my iPad wall charger rather than just a computer USB port. I'm guessing it's limited somehow inside the device but I don't know a ton about it...

There are Vertu smartphones as well with only one model being a dumb phone.

True, but the Vertu Signature is the premium model and it's a dumb phone, and it's $5000 US more than the Vertu smartphone model "Signature Touch." It's also worth noting, the Vertu won't work with the Apple Watch. I've seen lots of Mainland Chinese with Vertus and Rolexes...I doubt an iPhone with a gold Apple Watch Edition will entice them to "work" on themselves. Vertu has international concierge service access...

Solar charging

My $100 G-Shock watch has solar technology built into the face of the watch to maintain a constant charge. Why couldn't Apple implement something like this? I know the Apple watch would draw more power but at least it would help a bit if you're outside most of the day.

man, i really want to get one...but the only a day battery life is concerning. prob going to wait for real world users to report back on how battery actually plays out.

Real world use initially will be poor because of the frequent use as an attitude to a new shiny toy device. Kind of the same threads complaining about iP6 initially. There will be a lot of people complaining on the boards however compared to the total # of watches sold. It will be probably single % at best.

Actually there are at least a couple Smartwatches, the Samsung Gear S and LG Urban LTE, which have their own cellular antennas. Also Pebble is planning to add independent connectivity with other Bluetooth devices to their watches.

If only apple had the geniuses of MacRumors forum working for them instead of those silly engineers they have now.

You referring the the silly engineers that didn't have the ability to put a front facing camera on the first iPhone?

It's got nothing to do with engineering. It's about the marketing team holding back on key features including battery life so they can "improve" the features in the next generation of devices.

I think you're underestimating how much more power the Apple Watch will need. I would expect any smartwatch to draw a thousand times more power than the G-Shock, if not ten thousand times.

Already have, right on the front page of MacRumors yesterday. Already mentioned in this thread too I think.

I should have specified that the majority of smart watches require another device. I question the sales figures of the Samsung and the LG, as they're probably a minirity. Pebble is still going to be reliant on another device.

How's that tinfoil hat sitting? Comfy?

Wow, I'd like to speak with that brilliant analyst :D

Well I did say the Apple Watch will draw more power in my post. This is when engineers are challenged to be innovative and creative, is that too much to ask these days? Maybe having the watch go into reduced power mode when not in use only displaying the time. You would be amazed how much power solar technology can provide. We use solar technology at my RC plane flying field to charge our large 6 cell 6000mah batteries.

Do you realize that a G-Shock watch has just a fraction of a complex smartwatch energy consumption?

Oh dear.... You really think they hadn't the ability to do that?
It was a deliberate choice, on an edge only device, to not put a front facing camera for video calls. It was 2007 dude.....
Who do you think you are to call "silly engineers" the people that basically changed forever the way a smartphone was intended?

The sad thing is these "analysts" can keep saying this because very rarely do people go back and call them out for their mistakes.

It's kinda like the folks here who say things like apple users flip flop or that apple didn't do anything special then run away when called out. You keep saying stupid things unchecked forever and you really don't have an incentive not to be a moron lol.

What a piece of crap.

I have a Garmin 920XT which is a fitness watch with GPS which I use with GPS about 4 times a week and then also for around 4 swims a week where it is recording (but no GPS). I also wear the watch all day and night where it tracks my steps and sleep and functions as a watch as well as a bluetooth connection to my phone with smart notifications.

Charge time about 1:30 once a week.

This of course is the crap 1st gen apple product so they can finally make the product they should have originally by 3rd gen.
