As a dude with a small wrist I'm so bummed about how gigantic this thing is. The features are awesome and I would totally pick one up in a smaller case size but this would look absolutely comical on me

One can hope the Action button is contextually aware, as in, it does different things depending on the app you're using. So while it's nice to customize it for the "home" or "watch face" screen, if I'm already using the Compass app, I don't want the Action button to start a workout. I want it to drop waypoints. Does anyone know if this is the case?

The bezel is way too wide on Ultra. The display area on Ultra, according to Apple specs is 1164 sq mm vs 1143 sq mm on a regular Watch 8: basically the same size.
agreed. Since it has the flat physical bezels, would have been nice if the screen itself went all the way up to the edges. That black border is quite large.

As someone who has tried to use my AW4 in many outdoor sports, this looks great. A touch screen just doesn't work well with wet or sweaty hands, gloves etc. I can finally ditch my Garmin.

I keep thinking of a moment when the ALS malfunctions and someone looks at their watch at midnight while in bed, and they just end up screaming before looking like Sam Neill in Event Horizon. 😄

Hopefully it will switch to that cool new red light mode.

I don't know but I want this for Apple Shortcuts. Like if I am walking up to my office I want the orange button to turn on my lights and coffee machine.

But for other things at other times I want the orange button to do other things.

Thats what I want. If I'm connected to my cars bluetooth I want it to control my garage door.

Warning!! Unpopular opinion ahead: That thing is so un-Apple like and hideous. It looks like a knockoff of an Apple Watch.
It’s horrible no other way to look at it and they ruined series 8 with nothing new

Tough choice for me, I was planning on upgrading my Series 3 to a 45mm stainless steel Series 8, but for $50 more I could get the Ultra.

I really like the stated 36hr battery life, then again it’s quite chonky. 🤔

It looks like an extreme sports watch.

Which is what it is.

Function should always come before design.

I don't know who was expecting this to be a delicate apple design when apple's goal was to make something that would stand up to rocks and oceans.

Which is what it does.

wats extreme tho, the normal watch is strong and durable and you can add an extreme case if you want, so what's so special, this has the louder speakers and brighter display that's not extreme that should have been standard on series 8

”Fixed a bug where the siren could be sounded in crowded, public areas. Siren will now check the GPS to ensure it’s in the wilderness.”
Sadly, I can see that happening if the feature is abused. That would cripple its use in some emergency situations where it could be a lifesaving feature. For example locating someone caught in a building collapse or fire.

If I heard correctly, in the presentation yesterday they said the watch could work in as low as -20 C. In parts of Canada and Europe it is not uncommon for the daytime temperatures to be -30 C or lower and we do not hide under the bed. We go out and are active. So can this expensive Garmin wannabe not handle such conditions?
Every Garmin model I see online are also listed at -20 C operating temperature.

I find it strange that you cannot plan a trip in advance and hike then from waypoint to waypoint.
The same with an offline map of the planned region. Why isn't it possible?

Similar to AirTags, I only see the headlines but no widespread problems that don't already exist. People can blow an airhorn in public at anytime for instance.

It means that it’s performance doesn’t degrade in such conditions. Your own body temperature would have to plummet to keep the phone from reaching below -4. Odds are you’re wearing a full length shirt, parka, etc at even lower temps.
This is actually one of the reasons I consider getting the big and expensive watch.

Using AW6 during the cold season is a nuisance. If the temperature is above freezing, I do not usually use gloves when running. This means my hands (and wrists) will be very cold in the beginning and only after the first half-hour or so become comfortably warm. During that time my AW dies. At –20 °C / –4 °F it needs more clothing than I do.

In some cases the siren would be more useful in the crowded, public areas (urban wilderness) than in the (rural) wilderness...

Area is a quadratic function. So the Ultra has 1164 - 1143 = 21 sq mm more area than the 8. Since the aspect ratio is roughly square, that means that the Ultra has roughly sqrt(21) = 4.6 mm more linear space in each direction. That’s more than an eighth of an inch.

Grab your ruler, and you’ll see that that’s a non-trivial length for something to go on your wrist.

Yes, it would be nice were the bezels as thin as on the 8 — whether because the case was smaller or the display area was bigger. I’m sure we’ll see that no later than mid-decade.

But the display itself actually is bigger, plus it’s got a much larger battery, plus it’s got the extra speakers and microphones, plus it’s got … well, an improved but not as much improved as you might have hoped for display seems a reasonable compromise for all the other leaps ahead in the Ultra.

Nobody’s yet commented on the substantial increase of thickness of this watch; that’s likely to be much more annoying day-to-day. But I’m hoping / expecting to be pleasantly surprised … by the numbers, my S4 would seem to be a behemoth, but it actually looks and feels like nothing. I’m guessing that, by the end of the second day of wearing the Ultra, it’ll feel perfectly natural.
