Nothing screams advertisement more than a famous person endorsing something while promising it's not an ad - he may not have been paid to endorse it, but I expect the Ultra miraculously landed on his wrist expense-free, no strings attached.

This isn't Apple's fault per se, the whole influencer-fuelled SM endorsement business is just that crappy and inauthentic.

How is it that journalists writing in this space still misunderstand the raison d'etre for the gold Apple Watch offerings?

They existed not to gain a permanent share of the near or ultra lux segment but as a halo model to free all the Apple Watch models from a potential stigma of “geek gizmo”.

The gold Apple Watch models were provided to select influencers and the early adopters with a bundle of cash to spend on being stylish for its own flashy sake bought in soon after.

In this way the rest of the Apple Watch line became worthy of its price point and the risk of stigma was banished long enough for the Watch family to bevome desirable on its own merits.

In short, the gold Apple Watch offerings were a marketing exercise.

So glad I returned mine and went back to series 7, it’s actually the first Apple product in years I started to hate
This sounds a bit unbelievable.

Although it is possible, returning such a product only day or two after receiving it seems oddly unlikely (especially with no explanation of what prompted the return.)

Not quite calling BS but it would be interesting to know what the turn off(s) were.

This is an ad... do people really think it's not? Lol!

So many negative comments about his comments about ultra, sad. I am a watch collector too and became bored with the Apple watch and used it for the health benefits it offered, I.e. ekg and blood oxygen level. I had practically stopped using it and wasn’t going to upgrade to the new version of the Apple Watch but when I saw the Ultra I thought I’ll give it a try, and to my surprise it’s an absolute joy to use. So I agree with John Mayer and the hell with everybody else!

What to do with a gold Apple watch that is useless?. Well, it can tell tome for a few hours a day… Apple should take them back

I’ve been patiently waiting for his “review”. Now that he has given it his blessing, I’m headed to the Apple Store as I type!!!
I just hope it doesn’t make me as bad of a musician as he is🤷‍♂️😉

I think it’s an ad but $700 for someone worth 50-100 million is not going to make a bit of difference. He probably gets mailed 20 free watches a week most much more expensive.

It's got me curious. I'd still like to wait until a newer processor comes out, purely because I'd like to see if they draw less power and squeeze more out of the battery. I also have an AW6 and am in no hurry to replace it.

I was intrigued when the Ultra was released but never really considered upgrading my 'regular' Apple Watch - mainly because I wasn't convinced I needed all the rugged capabilities and adventurer features.

However I visited my local Apple store over the weekend and... wow! the Ultra looks really good to me! It's not as big/bulky as I thought it would be. But it's big enough. And, put next to the regular S8/S7, it looks awesome. Makes the regular ones look just a tiny bit puny :)

I've just bought a 14Pro and the AirPods Pro2, so I'm not going to spring for the Ultra now. But I know how I'll be treating myself this Christmas!

It’s an ad.

But shocked they sold 10s of thousands of the gold Apple Watch. I would have guessed 10s.
It's not an ad (it says so in his story). He wasn't paid and just shared excitement about a gadget like he always does. Too bad it's a popular one, I guess?
