This is what Apple said in its April 9 press release:

Beginning April 24, Apple Watch will also be available at boutiques in major cities including colette in Paris, Dover Street Market in London and Tokyo, Maxfield in Los Angeles and The Corner in Berlin, and select Apple Authorized Resellers in China and Japan.

Why is this news? Did the New York Times not read Apple's April 9 press release?

I feel a great disturbance in the force, as if hordes of nerds suddenly slammed closed their laptops and stampeded out door with their sleeping bags.

These boutiques have no idea what chaos they have brought upon themselves.

It's probably a tiny stock, and perhaps only the most expensive options. It's not like any of those stores wants hundreds of tech geeks lining up outside their stores on Friday or future launch dates.

According to the NY a Times report these stores will have Watch Sport and Watch models.

I don't think it's entirely about the wait. For the ones who spent the time to be there at the second pre-orders began, just to find out that it's not just online ordering. Very confusing and deceiving to say the least. Was the pre-order simply a way for Apple to realise the actual demand!

Apple's announcement on April 9 said it would be available in select boutiques, as well. We're talking a few hundred, which will be snapped up quickly. It's not like the iPhone launch where every store has thousands of them.

they try so hard to make it an exclusive luxury thing that is becoming a joke.

There will be no chaos. These boutiques have have large people in suits to ensure only the top 1% are allowed in.

How I miss Apple Computer. :(

They're happy that they sold 3 million Apple Watches in one week.

I guess. Meanwhile Jony looks completely bored at this Condé Nast luxury conference. :D

My guess, and this is only a guess, is that Apple was contraction ally obligated to give them so many units at launch. Probably couldn't reverse that when demand was higher then expected.

This is very funny. Thank you for the laughs!

Probably true as well.

I don't understand why these watches are not available in every Apple store from day one. There's nothing rare about it, for it to be only available at launch in a few places around the world. It's a smartwatch that will lose half of it's value in a year. Even the $17,000 watch is cheap in the world of luxury watches where Patek-Philippe's can easily go for $100,000 plus.

Contracts with boutiques could have been broken. As it is, they have essentially told their loyal customers that they are in fact, second class customers. I'm one of those and I feel pissed. The boutiques should not have stock until every last order placed on April 10th has been fulfilled. Most of those ordering just after midnight Pacific Time probably spend at least $1,000 a year on Apple products and services and influence 5 to 10 times that amount by people they know who are not early adopters. What business would deliberately upset a million or so customers? I suggest that those who pre-ordered let Tim Cook know that they are upset.

They will let Cook know. They'll buy it and other Apple products no matter how long the wait is. Cook gets positive feedback, record sales.

And what about the pre-orders, Apple? It seems I just wasted my time pre-ordering 5 minutes after the online store opened.

Give me a break. I bet you get your watch on Friday. And if not then probably by Monday. These stores will have a handful of watches. Why would you want to mess with the lines there?

Really, a "normal" person can't go in those places and get a watch if they wait in line? If your a poor schlub who lives in those cities, you can buy a watch there. And yes, there will be lines; big lines.

Also, the number of watches there is extremely small, 2000 all around the world. That's not going to make a difference in who gets watches in a mall outlet in Ohio.

I'm kinda of tired of the overblown arguments. Seriously. Really tired.

Friday, probably 0.5K to 1 million people will receive a watch; that's 250x to 500x more than will be sold through those outlets. The best way to get a watch was NOT to wait in line, just like the best way to get a phone is not to wait in line. Same thing.

Because they are limited edition and lots of folks ordered them.
You are complaining about delivery of an electronic device here and a few days of waiting.
Did you even want to buy an edition watch? If not why are you complaining?
Besides it will be available from brokers and other connected folks. eBay will have it if you want to pay a premium. Go for it big spender.

I'm starting to see who Apple cares about and it's not their Loyal customers. I wonder how long it will take others to wake up. I hope this not the sign of future launches. WE ARE WATCHING YOU APPLE.

Unless your telling me their loyal consumer don't live in Tokyo, London and Paris and Milan... I don't get it. The stores are not just selling to the extreme high end; these stores cater to clients that would typically buy Apple products (and not just the Edition). Anyone can stand in those very long lines friday and "maybe" get one of the 300-600 phones each of those few stores have. If your rich, your not getting to the front of the line; so, your remark is completely non-sequitur.

These private outlets had contracts with Apple and likely Apple couldn't pull out its stocks from there without very big legal problems (and also likely losing those outlets to sell any future watches too).

In their own stores, they could decide not to sell anything without prejudice.

ah maxfield.
the home of rick owens, balmain and other cool brands.

although i applaud apple for trying, i really wonder if they can succeed in making this thing fashionable and cool.

but i suppose pharrell and beyonce have donned it publicly so maybe they're really going to be able to pull it off!

I am not pissed about this at all.
It's a pretty interesting attempt.
