Phill: "Let's cut the watch cable size in half, that saves up 20 cents"

Tim: *Mindblown*
In April it was estimated that apple had sold 12m watches to that point.. 20 cents each... USD 2.4 million... So yeah, keep making fun of that and let me know how the 2.4m you you have in your bank account feel. Oh, sorry..

Well, that's cheap.
It's obvious that you don't own an Apple Watch. If you did you would be asking to trade the cable for a shorter one. While an iPhone might benefit from a 2 m cable an Apple Watch doesn't for the simple reason it is wholly useless when not on your wrist. You can't use an Apple Watch and keep it charging, it is a ridiculous scenario.

I am getting my first Apple Watch next month :)

But what if my wall sockets are not near, say, my bed and I want to leave it charging overnight and using it with Nightstand? I'd need a larger cable and an extension. Also, a longer cable could be tied using a twist wire, reducing its length.

Next year no cable. Just the puck that acts as a wireless charging collector (or porta battery.)

If Apple can get costs down, a Ceramic iPhone next year would be crack proof, shatter proof, bend-proof and support conductive charging.

If that is the case, I think I will be able to look past the whole no-headphones port thing, and actually buy a new iPhone next year.

Materials is actually where Apple innovation was always top notch. The colorful plastic iMac, the titanium Powerbook, the aluminum everywhere, the glass, etc. Using materials in new ways has always been one of the reasons I love Apple hardware.

wait wait, so the gen1 watch didn't come with a power adapter? :O
how.. how..? i don't even know where to start with this one.
I was a bit surprised when I first got my watch and it didn't come with an adapter, but no biggie since I have 645776456 of them around the house. The iPods, including the Touch, do not come with adapters either. Still a bit surprising though, considering they sprung for the longer cable.

i have two power strips that are super thin mounted to the back of each nightstand that all devices plug into, phone, watch, headphones. Until you have 2 cables you'll need to unplug this one for overnight travel so it is important this cable doesn't get buried behind something.

In any case, the 2 m cable spends a lot of time wrapped in a circle, in a knot, laying on the floor because it is just too long. This is coming from a guy that owns several 2m+, long lightning cables.

All this "I have an Apple Watch and I suffer from long cord syndrome" is a bit over the top. I own an Apple Watch and a long cord. It's plugged into a socket that is a foot away from my nightstand. The extra cord droops behind the nightstand. No problem.

In fact, the length of the cord hadn't even entered my mind until this post. Who cares? But let's not act like Apple is doing us a great favor here.

I'd say you're on to something:

Wired, "Here’s What You Need to Know About Ceramic, The Fancy Material in Apple’s Fanciest Watch"

"...the back of each Watch uses zirconia ceramic where the magnetic charger attaches. Ceramics are non-conductive, and don’t interfere with wireless charging."

and

"The result is a material that’s pretty much un-scratchable, and, under most circumstances, unbreakable."

If Apple can get costs down, a Ceramic iPhone next year would be crack proof, shatter proof, bend-proof and support conductive charging.

Yes, ceramic is strong (hard) but it is more brittle than a metal. That means that while it is very hard to scratch it is prone to cracking. Cast as thin as it would need to be for a phone I could not imagine it lasting very long in real world conditions.

This isn't as tragic as it seems, for a lot of people, I bet. I typically have all my lightning cords and kindle cord plugged into a USB hub that only needs one wall plug.

Lot of people snarking here, but it's a good move.

The 2m cable is fine for leaving at home, but kind of too long for taking with you while traveling. 1m seems like the perfect length for the default in-the-box cable.

2m is 6 basically feet. 6 feet!

Doesn't surprise me if all their other devices start having cables half their size.
'You are extending it wrong'
"You don't need it that long, we know your house"

The issue is that they keep falling off the nightstand to one side or the other, because it has a giant weight on the front and the cord tends to catch the drawers... This is totally petty I know, but it tends to be cluttered looking which isn't the look I was going for in my bedroom.

I would personally like that multiple devices come with multiple sizes of cables, so people buying into the Apple ecosystem have options and not have to go out and purchase longer cables. Say I have an iPhone, an iPad, throw in a watch too. 3 devices, 3 cables, 1m long. If I need a longer cable, I have to spend more and buy one. What use are the two exact same size cables for me then? I would much like that one of the devices came with a longer cable, that gives me options within the ecosystem I paid for, not having to make another expense.

On the other hand, pretty radical, but Apple could let the users take a cable size of their choice for free at the time of purchase, and do away with a cable in the box. That would be very user friendly.

Don't expect to use headphones while your phone charges though!

I've moved to wireless one and a half years ago.

Honestly, looking at people with wired headphones now feels like having an iPhone when everybody else was still on clamshells.

Hahahahahahaha I've seen it all now. People so wrapped up in Apples marketing they are complaining about having MORE for their money with longer cables hahahahahaha

I can assure you their will be FAR more people wanting longer cables then what they get!

On the other hand, the AW S2 edition comes with the stand.

Most Android phones don't even come with earbuds anymore. Many Android phones also skipped the AC adapter, only included a USB cable.
Is it a surprise? Nope. Apple is not special Everybody does it.

It's an agreement manufactures have adhered to not to supply chargers, to help the environment not that their shareholders will complain... So it's good and bad as you have to buy a charger at an inflated cost to having one in the box.
Does the iPhone 7 come with a charger?

It came with a 2m cable since many people have their watches on their dressers and needed the long cable to reach the outlet. That is Apple ingenuity and thinking things through.

Now theyre just being cheap.

You're doing your bedroom wrong. It's not a place of social gathering where things have to look nice and tidy. People are unconscious the majority of time spent in a bedroom. And when your awake in there, doing the thing that people do, extra cord should be the last thing on your mind. If you bring a chick back and she is turned off by extra Apple watch charger cord and leaves, she's just done you the biggest favor of your life.

The traveling bother sounds like a legitimate complaint of a long cord. It falling off the nightstand due to excess cord weight...can't say I've ever experienced that.

In reality, this is purely a financial decision. It's not about aesthetics or ease of use. It saves material costs and I'd bet we'll see a 2m watch charger being sold for $30 very soon.

Help the environment? Yeah, sure. So are you saying Apple not including AC adapter for Apple Watch s1 is to save environment?

WHAT?!?! Once again apple controlling the market!! Telling us how far from a plug we can be when charging our watches!! Boycott!! We won't take this anymore!! I demand to be at least 1.5 meters from a plug!
Lol. Actually that would be a nice size for my setup. But...whatever. Slow news day for watches, I guess.
