I am speaking for myself. I have friends on multiple carriers. The one I'm most concerned about is on Sprint.

Now that's where you can go to enjoy some dropped calls... at least in the panhandle of FL.... BOOOOOOOO!!!

Sprint used to be rock solid in D/FW. sadly that no longer seems to be the case.

That's only about an hour away from me (destin is). Yeah Sprint here is the devil. I don't understand how an area can get less signal over time? Makes no sense.

No, I do get it. Apparently you don't. This isn't hurting Apple one bit. All you have to do is look at Apple's market share. It hasn't lost a single bit. That's it....done and done. Drop it if you don't understand it.

BTW, read the stories....they are just coming up w/ headlines that will sell papers. The truth is in the numbers and they are clear as day. Android is not threatening Apple. Not in the numbers you've posted.

Keep on believing Android is not threatening Apple, because you haven't made me think otherwise. Show me some proof??? I gave you the numbers to make an educated guess on the market & trends when your first intuition of Android was wrong...

Your first thought was wrong, and your second thought is an uneducated analysis...

Like I said in my last post, enlighten me. You have provided nothing that makes me think you know anything about how to analyze markets & trends, and you are prematurely underestimating the graph/numbers all together.

Keep on believing Android is not threatening the iPhone...

Steve jobs walks on stage and pulls the next iPhone out, the phone has an apple designed world band chip that will work on any carrier so long as they hold to a set of high standards set by apple. No negotiations with any carriers no exclusives. Carriers will be tripping over themselves to give their customers the best value. Network performances will increase prices will drop. Consumers will be happier than ever. Carriers will prosper. Apple will sell millions and millions more iPhones than they ever have and will be #1 in the entire world. Another revolution by apple and jobs.

This is what I want to see happen.

Phones have always been tied to this carrier or that carrier and naturally everyone expects apple to someday release the iPhone on carrier x.

The iPhone is popular enough that it no longer needs an exclusive carrier. Apple is in a position to launch another revolution and change things forever, if anyone can do it it's apple.

The AT&T deal is no longer good for anyone. Their network is taxed, consumers are fed up with it all, and apple are limiting themselves.

If this happens there will be no more data plans per device, the telcos will become mobile ISPs. Thanks to the innovative revolution and the thriving competition it would create.
Apple will sell millions upon millions more of everything. iPhones, ipads, iPods, macs.
It would be the next big thing and no one will see it coming. The competition would be set back another three years.

Until you show a market loss for Apple, you don't have a valid argument. And I don't care if your not convinced. Pretty much everyone else here sees it. Android is not a threat. It may be in the future, but now. They don't have the critical mass to make a dent in Apple's market share. Nobody but techies know anything about it.

We the customers must unite and send apple a message. The time has come to end the AT&T exclusivity with the Iphone. All the bad stories about drop calls should be enough for apple to see that an AT&T extension is not wanted. The Droid revolution is coming strong and people that don’t want AT&T like myself are going to get a Droid meanwhile. All you Iphone lovers that don’t want apple to continue with the exclusivity with AT&T lets unite and send apple a message, cause the Iphone is the #1 smartphone cause we the customers have made it that way.

:apple::apple:

lol "we", you mean the complaining users who are too lazy to switch to another carrier and go on to complain about not getting a signal lol

I'm guessing most people have not changed carriers, not due to laziness, but for some other reason. That was a pretty lame statement.

Apple is running a business. They know that exclusivity will get AT&T customers, and AT&T pays for that arrangement. As long as it makes sense for Apple, it will continue. Things do change, though, and there might be an evolution in the future. But for now...it's just business.

I am with a regional carrier which does not offer iPhone, and probably never will because they would not generate enough revenue to make it worthwhile for Apple. Cincinnati Bell provides me with phone/cell phone/ internet. I run my business through them and they have done a great job for a fair price. To change my business and personal information if I were to switch my carrier would be a real pain in the pants. Moreover, my husband is on the CinBell system and he said he wants to stay put. I could start WWIII, and then face a painful change over (if I win the war) but it's not worth it just to get an iPhone.

Moreover, I could get an iPhone and use it with Cincinnati Bell if I wanted to. They can service an unlocked iPhone. I probably will do that when I get the loot for an extra phone and the time to go through the endless fiddling that goes with a jailbreak and unlock.

C'mon Geckotek, please enlighten me... Happy Mother Day too!!! I keep on giving you material that you obviously haven't seen or read, and you ultimately keep on giving me NOTHING. You really are not given me any reason to acknowledge your intelligence on the subject. My ultimate conclusion of you is that you did not do well in your college Econ classes. I'm sure you were "that guy" that the professor lectured on how to understand graphs, markets & trends time after time. I have given you all proof you need to understand where my previous posts stem from. I have nothing from you except an uneducated graphical analysis. Give me proof to support your theory... I am not a prick, I just believe you don't have any grasp on the subject at hand. If you do, enlighten me...

You first thought Android didn't/doesn't have strong gains in market share, and you think Apple's stagnant market share has nothing do with Android's ongoing success...

Bud, you are 0 for 2...

First, you were wrong about Android having strong gains... Correct?
Second, you have showed me NO proof Android is NOT threatening the iPhone, all you did was underestimate the graph with a premature hypothesis...

Read some of the articles. Did the math. I'm done. Don't care if you don't understand a simple concept.

I can't really see how Apple isn't seeing the beginning of losing market share to the likes of HTC and whomever else is set to pounce with a snappy smartphone.

My helpful Phone Store guy suggests that I try out the Nexus One recently when I was in for a simple question about something else. It is top rated, it is shiny. It is sold by Google and it would cost me $529. BUT, it will work with my system and... I didn't fall for it BUT...

The encounter made me understand that there is a plethora of other devices. That distant grinding sound is the sound of the advancing Android army. They want a piece of that Apple pie, and they are not stupid. The words,"...or die trying" seem a fitting motto. And there are holes in Apple's armor. The very strategy of exclusiveness might prove to be a weakness.

Really, I was shocked to see the numbers of new smart phones which have announced they are going to break out. You can be sure that the ease of getting them, their proliferation through the non Apple outlets, the price wars among them, the intense competition among carriers are going to have a huge effect on Apple.

I am really fascinated by the stance that Apple is taking now. As a business model they are tremendous and I want to see how they handle this. Will they blow their lead like Coke did with the new formula, only to come back even stronger? Will they blow it and have to pant to come back like Microsoft did with Vista and Windows 7? Will they lose their way like Palm? This is a volatile place, today's invincible hero is tomorrow's has-been. It can happen to Apple, remember AOL or Netscape or other shrunken giants?

I think this next grand unveiling of the 4G iPhone is crucial to Apple and their success. They seem to have done super plus well with the iPad despite the scoffers. But iPhone is thoroughly necessary to do right to fend off these Androids. Will they do it? Will they stay the cool successful guy?

I get the definite impression that this is a watershed moment for Apple, that is why the bolstered the line with iPad this year and why that mock up phone happened to leak out *ahem* yup yup yup. Apple is a very shrewd marketer. I want to see how it pans out.

And by the way, You are even underestimating "market share" by calling it a simple concept. When you really try understand all of the driving forces that play into it, it usually is more complex than first glance...

Geckotek, I was looking for a counter argument from you to back up your hypothesis... Maybe get into the debate of the anticipated new device(4thGen iPhone) causing loss of market share for the iPhone. You had the chance to prove your point because there is a side to it that you can say Apple is still doing well annually from Q1 to Q1, and the stagnant market share could be due to the anticipated new iPhone coming in June/July or the possibility of the iPhone being released to other carriers besides AT&T in 2010. Market Share is something that usually has many outside factors that play a part... Call it a simple concept, and now you are 0 for 3...

Android is making strong gains & cutting into iPhone's market share. Disagree with me all you want, just back it up...

why are people comparing Android which is an operating system to Apple which is a large corporation? the stupid market share argument is flawed because it dosen't specify a specific Android device or a specific carrier...this is a classic example of comparing apples to oranges...what happens after everyone is tripping over themselves to get the new iphone this summer? my guess is that Android will be forgotten all over again...

Probably non contract

:apple::apple:

I prefer non contract phone and you can buy outright phone from the apple store or retailer etc

Then make enough phone to be marketed. By now apple should know that the demand of the iphone is always good so it should learn from previous experience.

I rather buy outright phone rather than contract base as I can choose my own carrier if I decided to change.

Exactly it happens Every. Single. Year.

Then go back and read what I typed. It's pretty clear. You touted specs, I stated that Apple has proved that user experience > specs.

You provided data showing that Android has gained 5.2% of the market and that none of that came from Apple. So your facts show in no way that Android is a threat to Apple. (Keep in mind, I'm a former MS fanboy....definately NOT an Apple fanboy....I'm just doing the math and nothing more.)

You are completely ignoring the fact that Apple's market share has gone unchanged. Let me state this as clearly as I can:

Apple has lost NO market share to Android.

Here, let me do the math for you:

Palm 7.2% to 5.4% = 1.8% market loss
Microsoft 19.1% to 15.1% = 4% market loss

4 + 1.8 = 5.8

Android 3.8% to 9% = 5.2% market gain (this comes from the 5.8% lost from Palm and Microsoft)

Apple 25.5% to 25.4% = .1% loss...hardly worth mentioning.

RIM is actually the big winner here...42.1% of the market!!!

Exactly! At my Church tonight I was in a room where 4 out of 5 people had an iPhone. There wasn't a single Android phone in the room. I have 2 friends that I know of that have Android phones (and I'm a geek working in IT!!). The iPhone is almost like a virus. Everytime I turn around another friend has one.

Let's not forget Apple holds their own with only one device, updates here and there, they do not update their phone every month because it all works well as is (quality control helps this). Android is sitting on several phones made by various carriers, Palm is almost out of business, Microsoft OS is sitting on many various vendors, (RIM just needs new hardware and new OS, they are boring now).

Apple's biggest win is they only have one device sitting on one OS, running on one Provider and to that, they complete with the many other options that are out there, not too bad in my book.

Let's not forget that Apple really has outsold all the rest, RIM was always a business phone now look they like all the other vendors are copying Apple. Everyone waits to see what Apple will do every June, so who has control over who, personally the Nexus One is a sinking ship, only on T-Mobile...Yuck, and $529.99 otherwise, simply stupid....

Now if I only can find a Truck or car like that I would not have friggin car payments every 3 years

just NY and SF....Houston The 4th Largest City in America has exceptional coverage

In Los Anegels AT&T is solid. I've beenwith Cingular/at&t a while, always been a great service and company to deal with for me....I am bicoastal, due to work, and I get good service in Boston, Philly, DC, Flordia areas...and up and down the west coast...I enjoy at&t

I think AT&T does better in areas with hills than Sprint/Verizon because of the 800MHz band.

I just got through talking to a salesman at the Cincinnati AT&T Phone store. For me to get an iPhone (we were talking about when the 4G comes out) I would have to sign up and the least expensive plan I could get would be $70/mo. I would have to buy the iPhone (of course) and there are no bundles or discounts at all. Then there is a $30/mo charge for data transfer in addition, and this does not include texting. The extra would be $100/month just to own the phone and work it on ATT in Cincinnati.

ATT does not offer home phones or high speed internet in Cincinnati. They are not allowed. They pointed me to Time Warner (about whom everyone complains bitterly here) for my home phone and internet needs.

Right now I am paying about $140/mo for high speed internet with Cincinnati Bell, home phone, two cell phones (one of which is a smart phone) and that includes the data transfer part of the plan.

In other words, for me to make a "legitimate" switch would cost me 71% of what I am paying now just to own the iPhone and run it on their set up.

I am just going to duct tape my iTouch to the Blackberry and have a hybrid phone. :( I will call it the iBlackPhone.
