You said: "Actually, the assumption that having around $300 free = room to pleasantly buy a new iPhone is what is financially irresponsible. It is possible to have tens of thousands of dollars saved up and conclude, reasonably, that $300 for a new phone isn't sufficiently warranted."
I want to commend you for that response. I was going to reply but I don't want to bump heads with anyone.
However, one should never assume. I know people who are smart, but not tech savvy. I know others who are wealthy, but too cheap to get a hotel room and always wanna stay with me
There are people who flash things they cannot afford, and there are those who have houses in the Hamptons and drive a hooptie.
But there are also those hit by this recession or another ill fortune, and their finances shouldn't be ridiculed. I respect a person who says that they cannot afford something. That's humble and may make another person think a bit before spending.
