Apple Pay is not nearly as supported as Samsung Pay.

Off the register bunk ... Apple Pay can be used wherever there is a contactless POS terminal which includes countries where Apple has yet to sign-up any financial institutions i.e. Germany, Italy, etc.

Samsung Pay can be used at all those contactless terminals, PLUS most non-upgraded magnetic swipe terminals... which are still the source of the majority of the world's transactions, last I checked.

That would require the physical card, NO? I'm in Canada and while present on the terminals I haven't seen anyone swipe their card in eons with the exception of taxi's

Samsung Pay includes both NFC contactless like Apple Pay, PLUS the technology of Loop Pay, which uses magnetic stripe emulation to fool swipe terminals into thinking you swiped a physical card.

It was very smart of them to buy that company, as magnetic swipe will continue to be around for many years in many parts of the world. It allows the user to not have to limit contactless to places with NFC terminals.

Here in the US, most of the places I buy from every day (pharmacy, grocery, neighborhood deli and gas station with swipe terminal) do not yet support NFC. It's tempting to get a Samsung phone just to be able to tap and go at all those places.

WOW ... how cool is that!

It's pretty clever, for sure. It's called MST (Magnetic Secure Transmission).

"MST technology generates changing magnetic fields over a very short period of time. This is accomplished by putting alternating current through an inductive loop, which can then be received by the magnetic read head of the credit card reader. The signal received from the device emulates the same magnetic field change as a mag stripe card when swiped across the same read head. LoopPay works within a 3-inch distance from the read head. The field dissipates rapidly beyond that point, and only exists during a transmission initiated by the user."

You're lucky in Canada that you have much more NFC support. Here in the US that's only about 10% of places. Maybe more now. But the addition of MST allows Samsung Pay to work at like 95% of places.

Exactly. Its the single thing which enabled Samsung to one up Apple Pay. It just works!

My bank now offers Samsung Pay alongside Apple Pay to it's customers.

Doesn't work with chip and pin, does it?

In Canada ALL POS terminals are swipe, chip & pin, and contactless ... choose your poison. The last I heard US banks where offering chip cards but still required a signature and the merchant uptake on contactless POS terminals has reflected what the banks are doing ... molasses flows faster. That Samsung technology gives a contactless experience NOW on a swipe terminal ... re-read comment #381.

Nope no signature with chip and pin at least where I shop with the cards I use. Stick the card in the slot, input the pin and off I go.

So I repeat, it's old technology that's going away that doesn't work with all cards.

You're missing the point ... Samsung Pay can be used like Apple Pay on contactless POS terminals AND where there is NO contactless POS terminal (like a high-percentage of US merchants) Samsung Pay emulates the contactless pay experience on a swipe / insert POS terminal ... until the technology actually dies which is a long time coming in the US - Samsung Pay is ahead of the curve. FTR I am an Apple Pay user.

I'm not missing the point, you say high percentage and I say in my case Samsung pay won't work due to chip and pin. So a high percentage except when it's not. However Apple Pay will work at those terminals I use where Samsung Pay will not work with my card.

Yeah I'm done ... we're both missing something in the translation. Maybe your card isn't registered correctly with you financial institution because it doesn't add up - both Samsung Pay and Apple Pay should work flawlessly on a contactless POS terminal.

Samsung Pay works with contactless terminals fyi the same as Apple Pay

"Old" technology which works country wide across all retailers using the swipe terminals which they are perfectly happy with and have no intention of upgrading. You can even find swipe terminals in third world countries, its that standard. It will be 50 years past by the time Apple Pay becomes standard so yes Samsung won this one.

Nope, this is already discussed. Samsung pay does not work where you have a chip and have to enter a pin. Swipe is going away and not in 50 years, so no Samsung didn't win this. They just bought a boat load of old technology.

https://www.cnet.com/news/samsung-pay-what-you-need-to-know-faq/

"Samsung Pay uses near-field communication (NFC) technology to process payments at tap-to-pay terminals.

However, the system also works with almost all other magnetic stripe terminals as well. These older systems are widely deployed throughout retailers in the US. Samsung Pay uses magnetic secure transmission (MST) when the phone is held against one of these registers. The phone emits a magnetic signal that simulates the magnetic strip found on the back of a credit or debit card."

And even if its adopted in the US,it will be a century till third world countries adopt it so Samsung still won

As kdarlinng suggested its not a bad idea to buy a Samsung phone purely dedicated for purchases unless you want to be that guy who is fiddling with the credit card in queues

Yes, the keyword is almost. Same as Apple, works almost everywhere. The loop part is what I'm stating is old technology vis a vis chip and pin, not how many vendors Samsung signed on.

NO it's not ... chip and pin cards are so yesterday ... Canada and other countries have had contactless pay credit and debit cards for years i.e. TAP & GO - just like Apple Pay and Samsung Pay with Samsung Pay having the added benefit in that it can act like a Tap & Go contactless pay where only a swipe/insert POS terminal exists ... Samsung has the jump for whatever period there is.

I think we're on the same page. In the US having a cc sans chip and pin Samsung pay has a small theoretical lead. In the US with chip and pin that lead is eradicated.

And outside the US which is the rest of the world Samsung Pay obliterates Apple Pay

Except where Samsung pay is not available and Apple Pay is; then Apple Pay obliterates Samsung pay.

The chances of which are extremely remote as swipe machines aren't going anywhere and unlike the headphone jack Apple cant force people to abandon them either .

Chip and pin may be "yesterday" compared to contactless payments...

...but it's not as old as anything MAGNETIC which is still being used in plenty of places. :)

I can't believe I still see "NO CHIP" handwritten on signs at the terminals in so many stores. I thought swiping was supposed to be gone by now?
