Pro or non-Pro?
I don't think the 2018 iPad without Pro is a good value.
Non-Pro. Given the chronic limitations of iOS, the hardware of the Pro is not as fully utilized as it could be. Paying significantly extra for capabilities that aren't being utilized is wasteful IMO.

I am glad that finally market forces (i.e. consumer demand) have begun to impact Apple product decisions.

Apple Exec: Why won't people buy what we want to sell them!?!
Apple Jr Exec: I suppose we could build the products they keep asking for?
Apple Exec: It's just crazy enough to work.
Bingo. Consumers have more power than Apple wants us to believe. If these rumors are true, then it shows that Apple acknowledges that they need to listen.

So Apple needs a lower price point. That's not news, that's obvious.
But why would I want to buy a "cheaper" version of a flagship device, just because the pricing is ridiculous beyond belief?

This will not sell at all ... I really hope Tim Cook leaves with a golden handshake.
His obsession with supply chain optimisation and high margins is just horrible.

By the way, shareholders will notice that as well. Regardless of all the nice talk about innovation in materials and new technologies. I would not be surprised to see AAPL touch $100.

I don't buy any current products anymore. I know it's irrelevant.
But the share price has moved and investors see that at least.
You do realize the majority of iPads sold are the cheap entry level ones and not the iPad Pro

Why on earth would these not sell?

Functionally, you can do everything on the cheaper iPads you can do on the expensive iPads. The fact is the pros are packed with technology (and cost) that add no value to the functionality of the product. My wife can do everything on her 2018 9.7 that I can do on my pro at 1/3rd of the price.

They will sell like hot cakes if the price differential is maintained

The first leaked images just came in people!

Yes. But Apple needs to make the high end attractive.
You can get low end devices to watch Netflix, Amazon and YouTube everywhere.

This is not what Apple needs.

What are the chances of usb-c on these things?

Think they will shift everything over yet or stick to it being ‘pro only’.

Yes, price differential is the key.

I have a 12.9 iPad Pro and a 2018 iPad. I've pushed the 12.9 Pro to the limit as a laptop/tablet type of hybrid. Except for the smaller screen, my 2018 iPad is equal to those tasks... and being a more portable device, I'm using the 2018 iPad far more than the larger Pro.

This high end is already attractive. People lined up on day-1 to buy the latest Pros.

I’ve given several as gifts and everyone loves them
Would these people buy them if you haven't gifted them?
I hand down my old devices to family members.

No one of them would go to an Apple store and buy one.
They can do the same on Android phones and tablets.

They only know Apple because I gave them the devices.
iPhones have been hot 5 years ago, today they are too expensive for non-Apple folk.
They buy the last gen Samsung and are very happy.

But as I said earlier, Apple needs the high-margin unit sales.

I disagree completely.

That's not Apples problem.

By the way, I believe the App Store is slowly dying.

I know literally no-one who bought a paid app, maybe a really small In-App purchase.
I cannot recall wether Apple has bragged about the payouts to devs recently.

Considering the hardware lineup, with limited Xcode support, I know lots of people who simply stopped developing.
Also, GDPR, Terms and Conditions, etc. play a role for small devs.
They probably get a lot of money from IAP in Freemium games, subscription apps and similar stuff.

I hate Pay2Win games but the success of these games seems to indicate I'm in the minority.

This is good news for customers, if true. It shows that basic market forces are still effective...where you spend your money speaks loudest. Dollar-for-dollar, feature-for-feature, the 2018 iPad is the best value in the iPad lineup (IMO).

An updated Mini and a new, appropriately priced 10" iPad will definitely generate some interest.
I would even say the regular iPad is the best value in anything Apple sells.

If current trends continue, the iPhone XI and the iPad mini will be the same size. It'll just be the same device, but they'll put them in slightly different boxes so they can sell them twice to people. :D

This is pure speculation...but I wonder if the updated "mini" might not just be an updated tablet...but a new smart display...ala Google Hub or Amazon Echo Show competitor? A 7.9" screen with better built in speakers...

There are millions of people who buy low end tablets because of the price who would choose an iPad if it is in a similar price point

Snip...What happened to delighting consumers with the best products it can make?/snip...

In my opinion the reason behind all this is the greed of *Wallstreet/shareholders, if Apple was a private company it would be totally different.

I have an iPad Mini at home, have little use for it at home, yet easy for holidays.

*Even in my small to medium company we see this, the main office in France wants more money every year, Staff are saving money where it can't be missed, prices go up, eventually something breaks.

Again. I disagree.
It's just that we are in a Mac Forum.
The iPad market share is minimal, and tablets in general are useless to most people.
Some have Kindles or similar.

How much longer you think this sticks around? Look for price increases on new entry iPad as well as the iPad mini as Apple also goes lower quality.
