How did you figure that? It is closer to the 6/7/8 sized territory.
I have an X and that's just a tiny bit bigger than my previous 6, but with a 5.8" screen (vs. 6's 4.7"). If Apple were to produce a 5.42" screen (w. faceid like the X), it could be significantly smaller than the 6/7/8. Don't think they can fit that into an SE-sized body though. I would be happy with 4.7" in an SE body. Would buy that in a minute.

I hope OLED won't cost $999 and up for that size in 2020, I could make my 8+ stretch to 2021 though if need be.

I definitely want a smaller iPhone again.
The desire for a smaller phone by some people notwithstanding, if the 6” and 6.7” phones keep their price points of $999 and $1099 and the 5.4” phone takes over the $750 price point of the Xr, how will current Xr owners see this change?

I'm all happy for smaller phone as I would like to upgrade my iPhone 6 but I'm not so thrilled for OLED. That tech is so flawed.

Sounds like Apple is trying to bring back the SE
Nope, at least not with the info in this rumour.

I have an iPhone 7 and X, and I agree. I’d rather have an LCD iPhone with ProMotion than OLED.
Yep. I’d rather have a ProMotion LCD than an OLED, for a phone. I suspect it will be OLED though.

OTOH, for a TV, I’d rather have an OLED any day of the week.

as long as they keep force touch...
My guess is 3D Touch is gone. I personally don’t think it’s very well implemented and have it off on our iPhones. It seems Apple has pretty much given up on it too and is now including feature parity on iOS with long press. Furthermore, developers ignore it.

Basically, it’s a feature that most (but not all) people don’t want and it adds cost and complexity, so it makes a lot of sense to kill it.

That was my first thought, that "thinner" and "cheaper" touch components = no 3D Touch.

That’s a dealbreaker for me no matter what size or display tech they use.

i know some people don't like/use it, but i'm so used to using it that i will be very upset if i have to get used to not using it.

i really hope it isn't. i'm not sure what makes you say apple had given up on it - it's a wonderful feature which works great for what it's intended for. i know that some(but not all) people don't use it, but personally, i find it super useful and will whine for several years if they get rid of it.

Never heard of this before. Do you have a reference?

[doublepost=1554216768][/doublepost]I was looking at finally upgrading my iPhone 7 this year but hearing about a possible smaller iPhone again makes me think I should keep it running for another year... will have to see if there's any outstanding features on the 2019 iPhones otherwise it might just be worth holding out for another year

So, it seems safe to say that the 2020 iPhone with the 5.42" screen will be larger than the iPhone SE. But, maybe not by much.

Making the assumption that Apple keeps the 19.5:9 aspect ratio (which I think is a decent assumption, but by no means a lock), a screen of that size would have a bounding-box of 4.92" x 2.27". Compare that to the bounding-box of the SE at 4.87" x 2.31", and the height is already over while the width is slightly under. Once you add bezels, however, the new phone will obviously exceed the SE in both dimensions.

The big question is, will the 2020 iPhones increase screen-to-body-ratio from today's models? We can optimistically say that the answer to this question is probably "yes", but by just how much would be nigh impossible to accurately predict at this point.

Best case, bezel reduction is very high and we get a device that is so close in size to the SE that it essentially matches that phone in pocket-ability. Worst case, we could be looking at a device that is approximately 1/4" inch wider and taller (1/8" all around) than an iPhone SE, which would still be a nice size for a compact phone, but would lose appeal for those looking for an SE-sized iPhone replacement.

Hopefully, by 2020 they have an OLED screen that doesn't give me headaches. You would think that Apple is a company thinking about their consumers, but this PWM fiasco has taught me otherwise. Good grief. It's not like it's impossible to make a flicker-free OLED screen.

Everybody focuses on the rumour about a smaller phone in 2020 and totally ignores what's rumoured to be coming out this year. If the people want a smaller phone, then why not just make it now. I guess they need to get a little more life and $ from the current versions before moving on to new (old?) things.

5.42 is almost exactly the same diagonal size of the iPhone SE / 5S!
5.39 inch is the diagonal of an iPhone 5. That would be dream come true. Waiting for this since my 6s. Actually I am on my third 6s now and I still find it too big for my thumbs bezel wise, but perfect screen wise.

This rumoured 5.42 phone would be the best of two worlds...

If it has headphone jack I buy at least three of them, one for each of my simcards hahah. :D

Maybe back to a more iPhone 5 style body again as they did with the iPad Pro and more angular edges?

Either way, I think this may be the first year I don’t upgrade since original iPhone. Prices for these are really getting away from the bang for the buck year over year innovation.
you like the design or screen size of the iphone 5? I like the design it was great, i think its probably their best one.
