You know Trump has gone on record for supporting strengthening Medicaid and Social Security, right?

Oh the humanity. Strengthening existing programs that aren't there for the sole purpose of expanding the welfare state.

Well I'm still getting my head around an election season that has Hank Paulson musing about voting for Hillary. :D

We are living in strange, strange days, Lizkat. I'd like to be enjoying the absolute craziness of it all, but I can't help but feel the whole thing is going to end with a bunch of cities on fire, and people swinging from ropes.

...I really should quit reading Youtube and Yahoo news comments.

You do know the welfare state has been scaled back significantly from what it was before the 80's right?

Probably a good idea. Far too much drama involved.

The scariest thing is that people are starting to sound like Youtube commenters in real life.

I can handle that on the internet. That's where crazy lives, after all. But when it's right in front of my face? It might be time for the whole country to step back and consider taking a breath before the whole thing goes off the rails.

Obama already covered that. If anything Trumps election would lead to a rally and recovery of credit ratings due to the fact that he doesn't embrace the choking socialism of the left.

I'm taking a break from making snippy comments at the moment. I would like to know why think this. Trump's election would be a symbol of dissatisfaction with the status quo. The prior downgrade in credit rating wasn't attributed to entitlement policies. The CRAs issued a downgrade supposedly because they didn't know what to expect from Congres. Socialistic policies don't seem to matter. The CRAs only care whether the US is likely to be able to service their (our) present and future debts. Military policy impacts this as well, because it's also a significant cost. CRAs don't care about the reason for the underlying fundamentals. They only care whether the US can pay, and getting into new wars without tax hikes is also a factor (I'm keeping that administration agnostic for a reason).

Oh the humanity. Strengthening existing programs that aren't there for the sole purpose of expanding the welfare state.

Renzatic responded to the same comment, and some of the hard line conservatives refer to these programs as entitlements or socialism. Why would you provide a sarcastic response to that?

Pure fantasy.

You should listen to him on healthcare. Per his own mouth, he is liberal on healthcare and thinks everyone should be covered and that people have to be taken care of.

And his belief, like many, is that there was a better way to do it. They simply could have deregulated the insurance industry and established minimum insurance requirements and expanded the safety nets by providing catastrophic coverage at a minimal cost. Instead, the entire industry has been &$@?ed up.

Look at things that have been deregulated in the country and the associated results of lower, not higher cost. Air travel? Telephone business? Now look at your local regulated utilities.

Deregulated the insurance business? So they could do anything they wanted? With people's lives?

Catastrophic coverage is great for someone young and healthy, meaningless to someone with a chronic condition.

And Trump isn't even mentioning these things as solutions. He just keeps saying we have to take care of people and that he is liberal on healthcare. Something you would never hear a true conservative say...ever.

Right... His not knowing anything about economics, and bonds and the whole treasury thing sure would be reassuring to markets... Man, where the hell do you come from?

You think Trump doesn't understand the market or economics? Wow.

Republicans caused the downgrade of our credit rating. Don't get it twisted.

Sure bud.

Did you actually read through that? One part states that attempts to close loopholes used by large corporations impacts small businesses. One or more examples would be good. He speaks about unincorporated small businesses prior to that, and they face entirely different issues. They get hit with things like the employer portion of social security. This has nothing to do with larger businesses. That is part of payroll tax, but it's never a focus of Congress as it's basically unavoidable.

He refers to the Reagan era as a model of corporate tax rates, yet doesn't include figures. He doesn't indicate whether 15% is intended as a flat rate or marginal.

He includes nonsense like this.
An end to the deferral of taxes on corporate income earned abroad. Corporations will no longer be allowed to defer taxes on income earned abroad, but the foreign tax credit will remain in place because no company should face double taxation.

No one ever suggested ending foreign tax credit. The typical running claim is that it's double taxation if a company filed a return on that income in any foreign country, regardless of the underlying accounting or origination. Most people have no idea what foreign tax credit is or how it differs for businesses with foreign subsidiaries and expatriates (who are the ones that really get screwed by expensive complicated tax preparation).

Then of course there's this one.

Reducing or eliminating some corporate loopholes that cater to special interests, as well as deductions made unnecessary or redundant by the new lower tax rate on corporations and business income. We will also phase in a reasonable cap on the deductibility of business interest expenses.

What does that first part even mean? As far as business interest is concerned, he could start with disallowing writeoffs on interest paid in service of loans issued by a company's own subsidiaries, or perhaps consider axing the carried interest exemption (even if it's not the biggest problem out there).

For the tldr version, it doesn't really state anything in a concrete form other than a few specific rates. Even then it doesn't contain sufficient information about the plan to forecast possible results.

Do you seriously think Hillary Clinton is a communist? Explain why.

Nah. Trump's presidency won't effect anything by virtue of being. He represents a certain amount of uncertainty, which'll probably make the market a little bearish, but his inauguration won't mark any immediate disaster.

Though if he tries to push renegotiating the debt for pennies on the dollar, and somehow manages to succeed in convincing congress to do so, yeah, expect the market to plummet, and our credit reading to take the most severe beating it's endured in nearly 100 years.

Don't forget his "we can always print more money to cover our debts" statement. Idiot

I read it and it makes perfect sense to me...

  • Tax relief for middle class Americans: In order to achieve the American dream, let people keep more money in their pockets and increase after-tax wages.
  • Simplify the tax code to reduce the headaches Americans face in preparing their taxes and let everyone keep more of their money.
  • Grow the American economy by discouraging corporate inversions, adding a huge number of new jobs, and making America globally competitive again.
  • Doesn’t add to our debt and deficit, which are already too large.

I see no problem here. These are good goals that reward the correct people who deserve it and encourages the pursuit of the "American Dream" or whats left of it.

I'm going to guess that you never heard the famous quote

It makes perfect sense if you don't care about anything specific. It sounds really nice when you don't try to think about how it would work.

Donald Trump's Tax Plan Could Tack $10 Trillion onto America's Debt

Trump’s Tax Cuts Would Add $24.5 Trillion to the Debt

I guess it stops there for you huh? Strong logic.

How about we actually do things that make us wealthy again and we can AFFORD that debt?

Debt is there anyway happening all the time.

Its small minded to think "reduce debt = good"

The whole idea is to put us in a position to start reversing the debt.

The only way to do that is to bring back businesses and encourage business and the spread of wealth and so on and so forth as per macro economic principles.

10 trillion debt is nothing if we are making many more trillions back by stimulating the economy.

Trumps job is to restructure trade deals with other nations that are unfavorable to us, and to make our working class stimulated to make us all thrive again and encourage growth.

We are trying to get rich is the main goal. Don't worry your little mind with small time numbers, we are looking at the big picture here.

Small business is the heart of our economy and without it we are dead anyway. How does it help to save 10 Trillion if we lose our country?

We are more importantly trying to save our country.

Again, those are good goals trump set forth.

The funny thing is you have bought into all his ********, hook, line and sinker. Make us wealthy again? How? The manufacturing jobs are gone, Trump cannot and will not bring them back. Reverse the debt? I thought Donny was going to renegotiate it and throw out the full faith and credit of the US, or was he lying? 10 trillion in debt is nothing? Who told you that, the guy who declared bankruptcy 6 times? What makes you think Trump can restructure trade deals? What powers do you think the President has? If small business is the heart of our economy, why did your guy steal 9/11 small business recovery funds? What are you trying to save us from?

Sad.

Hilarious.

Misguided.

Lacking any cognitive reasoning.

Typical.

Bot.

Troll.

Pick one, or more, or even all of the above.

Yes. And if he loves small business, why did he cheat so many small businesses, to the point of putting many OUT of business, to avoid paying them what he owed for services rendered? His MO was to order services, accept their estimates and when the bills come, refuse to pay them. He would claim they didn't do the job correctly and would only pay a portion but, even though they supposedly did a poor job, they were welcome to bid on more jobs for him. Huh? He is a classic grifter, plain and simple. He only knows how to play dirty in any way that is good for him and if innocent people get screwed, too bad. They're just "losers".

I don't think you guys understand the basics of capitalism.

Or mostly you guys take the elements that make capitalism work for granted.

People take action and start to build when they are encouraged.

I don't have time to write a whole essay about the complex chain reactions that happen when you encourage small businesses.

Everything comes from the top down. If leadership doesnt have the right philosophy then it permeates and matriculates all the way to the bottom and effects decision making.

The choices individuals make (and don't make) are very complex and affected by innumerable variables.

Thats why the people in this thread aren't running the country or working on helping the economy.

Let the high IQ leaders and business professionals like Trump who "get it" deal with this stuff.
