I'm sure the current state of the world factored into it. They prob. wanted more for it too.
No doubt, but for a massive 20% bump in price, the least they could have done is upgrade some of the internal components… wifi 6e has been the standard for awhile now, and standardizing on TB 4 ports would only simplify their supply chain and increase volume discounts. Or, they could have upgraded BT for cheap.

Judging by their decision to skimp on the M2 Air upgrade and drop a lot of hardware support with upcoming OSes, it looks like Apple is in money grabbing mode, not the ”surprise and delight users” mode.

I always crave for a larger screen in a small sized Macbook. Apple should find a way to built a 12 inch Macbook with a screen that unfolds to 18 - 24 inches. I might sound silly but why the hell not?

I hope Mark is right about the 12" M2 MacBook. That would be an instant buy for me. :D :D I was considering getting the new M2 MBA but, I will cancel that idea and wait and see if the 12" becomes real.
Given the redesign of the air, what are you expecting to be different about an M2 MB that isn't already a MBP?

12” MacBook could be a great ultraportable for those who already have the M1Pro MBP and are not happy with the weight of either the 16” or 14”

A 14-inch iPad, now a 12-inch Macbook. I think we are delusional here.
Apple sold both 12" and 14" iBooks back in the day. Having 12.5" and 13.6" MacBooks makes sense. I think people would buy the 14" iPad Pro, and Apple would delete the iPad Pro 11", offering it only as an iPad Air.

Why? Smaller devices aren't cheap devices. Air is here for that.
They are at Apple. And the 12" would be a MacBook Air or just MacBook. It's not going to be Pro anything.

Seems to me it's really time to kill off the 13" MacBook Pro as it doesn't fit the Pro moniker.

14"/16" MacBook Pro with XDR Screen
13"/15" MacBook Air
12" MacBook as the entry level at $999

Give the Air and MacBook at least 2 USB-C ports but put them on opposite sides!

Then for iPads have a 14"/12" Pro, 11" Air, 10" base, 8" Mini

Apple sold also 12" PowerBooks but weren't upgraded on Intel Macs until MacBook 12" that wasn't a Pro.
I don't think a 12" would be and "Air", the 11" Air wasn't a real trend setter. It could be a Macbook, sic et simpliciter. "Air" is the new "C/SE": entry level.

REALLY?!?! all these variations of 'overlapping laptops configurations yet the only choice for desktop machines are a two-year old entry level M1 or a M1 Max and up? come on  where are the choices for us desktop users!

I've been looking forward to updating my 2015 12" MacBook for quite awhile. Even though I use my 14" MBP M1Pro as my daily driver I still like the portability of the 12"MB.

I would buy a 12" M2 Macbook to compliment my loaded 16" M1 Max. That 12 inch form factor and 2lb is a set-n-forget. I sold my 12" and got an M1 Air. The Air is still to big for ultra-portability. The key use case for me is to carry a personal laptop in-addition to my work issued 16 inch. I dont need to carry two 16 inches.

Now we talking... New Macbook Air doesn't have USB-C port on right(short thinking) so Apple can fix it with 15" Macbook Air. The 12" whatever laptop is just pathetic because many were complaining and asking for Mini iPhone and they didn't even buy so Apple have to axe it in iPhone 14. Same will happen to 12" laptop. Apple, just don't do it. Bigger(screen) is better!
The 12” MacBook had a following, but it was hindered by the slow Core M processor and premium price. The M2 or M3 won’t have the performance issue.

I like the 12"MB for the portability at work and at home. I don't need a 12" with all the bells and whistles of the MBP. I have a 2017 MB (like new) and the only thing keeping me from using it as much as my M1 MBA is the keyboard. I am not a big fan of the tactile feel. I have never had any problems with the 12" keyboard not acting as it should. It can't compete (keyboard wise) with the M1 MBA.

And the lack of a second USB port and Thunderbolt

M2 would also have Thunderbolt support, and we'd hope they'd put at least two USB-C ports on the 12.5" MacBook. They could even leave out MagSafe, and I think people would be happy enough.

Yeah, I don't love the keyboard on my 2017 MacBook. Performance is adequate though, at least for a 5 year-old machine..

Also the trackpad is weak. The haptic feedback is noticeably stronger on the MBP's of the same era.

I believe in the 14-inch iPad. I don't believe in the 12-inch MacBook. Laptops with multiple windows and mouse cursor need a minimum screen real estate nowadays. Even in the PC world, that's not a screen size that's memorable.

I used to have the 11.6-inch MBA, that I loved. That was a different era, with much weaker mobile OSs than we have today. I can no longer see myself using macOS on such a small display.
