Console-level games? I guess last-gen - the PS5 and XBox SX aren’t the size of a stack of pizza boxes for nothing.
I was thinking about how a A14 X/Z based Apple TV 4K or 8K would compete with that. Apple seems to be competing at Nintendo Switch level. I be curious to know if Apple actually have motivation to go more towards console level? There are some iPad Games that are way better then Apple Arcade IMHO.

Apple spends $70 million to get rights to a movie without blinking an eye. They need some first party games and a first party controller.

$70m on a movie (Greyhound) an excellent point, but how much did Apple spend on R&D on the AppleTV and accessories? Total spend is rumoured to be $16Bn for 2019 for everything (including phones I guess).

If Apple were aiming at the the streaming market with an A12 powered AppleTV they would not put a game controller in the box, and if they could put the old aluminium controller back in they could sell it much cheaper. It would surely be an admission of failure if they did that though.

Note that Apple are supporting both PS4 and Xbox controllers in iOS. This for me says Apple are making sure that people with a spare controller lying around can use them on AppleTV - or even purchase a new one at their local retailer (or go used). They are everywhere and people are comfortable with one or the other.

Apple don't need to reinvent the wheel when there's a generation of gamers who are used to one or the other kind of controller and any new gaming controller runs the risk of being compared unfavourably with units that are more familiar to gamers and commonly sold in plenty of places.

I think the 'controller' in the report has to be a redesigned (cheaper?) set top box controller on that basis unless they are going for a Wii Fit style nunchuck arrangement...

The A14X can't compete with next-gen consoles. With current-gen ones, maybe, which may be good enough.

Sure beef it up more but a new remote please! ... thinking more along the lines of the LG Magic Remote'ish.

When you can get a next-gen Xbox for just $100 more than the current Apple TV, they definitely need to step things up a couple of levels.

Whats wrong with using some of the mainstream wireless game controllers? Apple has zip experience doing this.

Not quite...

Apple already announced they're building their own GPUs and dropping Intel/AMD/NVidia GPUs on Macs.
When someone says that and Apple still has zero Apple Silicon Macs I sorta chuckle. Be realistic we would love to have alternative processor powered devices that are better, but technology is not a snap your fingers its ready, this takes a lot of time to transition to. ;)

This can’t come soon enough. I love my Apple TV but hate the remote. The clicking everytime you do something wakes my wife up every night which of course is my fault and she tells me to turn off the tv lol
