But, they absolutely are. PS5 and Series X are filled with old technology - inefficient x86 CPUs, optical drives, expansion slots, and the massive power supplies needed to feed them. Not to mention the massive heatsinks, heatpipes, and fans. If Apple's efficiency claims are true and they can match a desktop PC class CPU with mobile wattage, and they can do the same with graphics - all of that *bulk* can fall away.

The Series X's mainboard is a rather small device. It's just all that other *bulk* that turns it into a monolith
AMD Zen 2 is what. A year old? And RDNA 2 graphics haven’t even been released for PC yet. Old technology? Pardon, but, what the **** are you talking about?

Am I missing something? Do you mean many developers don't? ...Because... Connect a wireless game controller to your Apple device

Exactly as per your quote. Why would Apple try to reinvent the wheel and then charge more for people to have a branded controller when Apple already allow Microsoft and Sony controllers? Nothing to do with developers, it's about Apple not going to the effort of making their own controller.

Console-level games? I guess last-gen - the PS5 and XBox SX aren’t the size of a stack of pizza boxes for nothing.

They don't have Apple's chip though. They just need to put one of these things behind it:

Not to mention 64 or even 128GB of storage is just insufficient for serious gaming. A single current AAA game is generally between 64 and 128GB today on both last-gen(!!!) x86 platforms (PS4 / Xbox One). And yes, even the better Switch / Wii U games (e.g., Zelda BoTW) can easily take around 32GB and those Nintendo consoles are strictly HD-only, not even Full HD.

The Nintendo Switch with a worse CPU and GPU outsold the entire Xbox one line. The raw grunt behind a console is rarely relevant.

But that's because of the unique dual mobile/docked hardware, which easily counterpoint the less efficient CPU/GPU. And, of course, the first-party games: a 30-year-long row of established Zelda, Mario etc. games. Neither of them would be offered by Apple.

I'm talking about x86, the legacy architecture which underpins all of Intel and AMD's CPU offerings? The underpinnings of which date back to the 1970s. You know, the ones where you have to maintain compatibility with 40 years of machine code, and spend 30 watts of thermal power to accomplish what an ARM chip currently accomplishes with 3.

And RDNA2 is basically GCN 6. The PC chips speculated to launch with it will pull 200 watts or more. Efficient? No. Powerful? Probably?

A lot of us prefer physical media, which can, in addiiton to collectability, also be re-sold / purchased for cheap used. This is why both next-gen consoles have both a discless (online-only) and a traditional disc-drive (also-offline) model.

If they ever want to be taken seriously for games, they need their own controller.
They need their own controller, but I would be extremely surprised if Apple had any good ideas for their own hardware design

Native support for Xbox One and PS4 controllers is good enough for me.

I agree (I use an xbox one controller) but I would love the automatic switching action similar to the Apple AirPods, a single controller that could switch between all your devices (tv/ipad/iphone) as needed.

Even better would be a controller that could automatically also log you into your friends apple equipment, if you brought your controller over to play as player 2 on someone else's apple tv/iphone/ipad etc. Sync Game Center, iCloud saves and all the rest.

There is a lot of extra nice functions that apple could build into a controller that hasn't been done by anyone else yet.

don’t think Apple has any ambitions (at this point) of trying to play in the PS5/XBS sandbox but Apple could easily play in the same realm of games as the Switch. And in the same way Nintendo has their own niche so could Apple if they play their cards right.

Now if Apple wanted to go all out, then maybe they buy out Nintendo. I’d love some Zelda and Metroid on my Apple devices :) but That’s not going to happen.

Truthfully what I think we are going to see is basically the opposite of what we see on something like Xbox. XB/PS both are great gaming devices that happen to also be able to be a decent media consumption devices. With aTV I think we’re looking at a great media consumption device that can also be a decent gaming device.

100% agree. AppleTV will likely never replace someone’s current gen PS/XB so if you’re a “console gamer” you likely own atleast one of them already. Apple utilizing theses controllers opens up for more people to game on the aTV in my opinion than needing to buy specific accessories.
