The current controller can't be the one they intend to use for games. I would suggest that they could make games compatible with Bluetooth Xbox or PS4/5 controller, why reinvent the wheel?

Plus, taking the expense current controller out of the box makes the package cheaper.

Well, I use PS4 controller for Apple TV games. it is already compatible.

Without the advantages of the Switch:
- unique dual mobile/docked hardware
- quality first-party games

Totally agree on the 1st party games, but the hardware it could be argued that if Apple can figure out how to sync game progress between your devices that you walk away from your aTV and take your iPhone/iPad with you to continue your gaming. there’s stuff to work out there like controller requirements, etc. but that could be an “alternative” to the docking. And honestly I’d rather use my phone if the progress transfers and controls are OK. i like my phone’s screen and touch capabilities better than the switch’s screen. and I always have my phone with me :)

I’ve been waiting for this for a long time. Apple could not only dominate the casual gaming market, but more or less recreate the segment into something that’s pervasive across a much larger percentage of homes. That leads to a bunch of cross-selling both ways. It’s been a missed opportunity for a long time.

Honestly, the product is already pretty good but with 2 outstanding Achilles heel(s):

  1. We're in the tail end of 2020 and they're still using the A10X. That might fly if this were a $80 product. Unacceptable. Anything less than the A14 means I'll be looking at the Nvidia Shield or something with a little more oomph.
  2. That remote is 100% pure garbage. Absolutely one of the worst modern controllers of any consumer electronic I have ever owned. It's form over function, something Apple usually avoids with great skill.
Finally - Apple doesn't stand a chance in the gaming market. If they want to be a gaming company they need to buy Nintendo, anything short of that is wasting people's time. Microsoft and Sony will eat their lunch.

It'll need a default game controller in the box if they want arcade to take off. Call it Apple Arcade or Apple TV Arcade and it might actually take on a place for casual games.
They do need a controller in the box but it seems unlikely to me that this will happen. They still treat ATV box as a hardware product first which means they want to make profit selling it and with good profit margins too which is what they want from all their hardware products. They need to change this view and treat the ATV box as an appendage to the services (ATV+ and Apple Arcade). This means selling ATV boxes at cost or even at a loss. They would get a lot more money back from services and games if they do this. A controller in the box means a whole different level of gaming can be aimed at this device because they would not need to require all games to be playable without a controller. However, it's not really in Apple's DNA to take this route so I am doubtful they'll go this way. On the other hand they've been pushing services really hard lately. So who knows.

Updated chip and a new remote. Especially an improved remote. That would get my money.
I don’t get everyone talking about a new remote. The current one is already small enough to easily lose, and you already can’t tell by feel or touch how it is oriented in your hand. Plus many functions require pressing a button multiple times with no feedback about whether the first press was accepted or not. What’s left to Improve?

The current controller makes it difficult enough to navigate apps on the homescreen, choosing episodes on Netflix is a game of the marble rolling balancing board Labyrinth. I tend to use my SONY's TV controller over the fidgety Apple one. I just purchased the Apple TV 4K (at full price), so not buying any new Apple TV soon, but a better controller would be nice.

I put a strip of fabric on the back of the controller to make it a) less slippery b) haptic feedback

I find that super annoying too...

Using multiple chips and limiting certain games to just one of them would be horible fragmentation and confusing to the customer. I don’t think that’s a good idea at all. I would prefer they keep it to chip generations by year as that’s much easier to understand and pretty much how things have always worked.

Microsoft and Sony will eat their lunch.

Will eat? They have been for years. In the case of Microsoft they have dominated the computer gaming market from the Mac's beginning with cheap PCs. With gaming already entrenched for Windows it hasn't been possible for Apple to gain any kind of traction here.

Apple Arcade is just a service that helps keep investors happy (diversification). It was never intended to take on Nintendo, Sony, and Microsoft for significant gaming market share.

They do need to sort out the naming for their TV products. Apple TV box, Apple TV app, Apple TV+. Maybe they should rename Apple Music to AM+ too.

You forgot Apple TV Air. 🙃

A13 and up as minimum requirements? My A12Z is not enough for the minimum? Sad.

$99 would be a real stretch considering the cost, but I’ve been expecting Apple to offer a below-cost box with the purchase of an annual Apple TV+ subscription for awhile. I think $79 would be doable.

Similarly, a below-cost HomePod (mini?) with the purchase of an annual Music sub.
I think what Google is offering with their new Chromecast with Google TV is incredible value. For only $50 they could make a huge dent in that market.

I’m really looking forward to the next tv more processing power for better games and an upgrade to hdmi 2.1 for eARC would be welcome. I am pretty impressed with the content on Apple TV + Tehran is awesome and so are quite a few of their shows . They need to buy out Disney then game over for anyone else

Hopefully it’s not another Siri remote like device because that freaking thing can go die in a fire.

It’s the worst human interface device I have ever used.

and I’ve used apple puck mice, Tandy coco joysticks and $10 pc keyboards.

I think you’re right, they probably should do some type of basic streamer, as opposed to the streaming+gaming device they have. With the A12/A14 + RAM + storage, the BOM cost is too high to sell that box for $50.

But there’s no technical reason they couldn’t sell a $30-50 dongle-type streamer, the cheaper the better. I haven’t thought about the strategic implications of that though. It might be at odds with their grand plan. (Whatever that might be; I sure as hell haven’t figured out what it is.)

If they really want to innovate... How about they just learn to play back video properly? Like not dropping every 1001st frame from all the lovely 24.00fps content out there? Just give me proper video playback and I will be happy.

It is great. Maybe you should improve your router or provider

Apple TV needs more cross platform games if they’re serious with turning it into a gaming console.
If the games are cross-platform, then why buy Apple TV? Apple's strategy has always ever been to make their systems walled gardens that contain stuff that is better than or unavailable elsewhere (even when that strategy fails).

PS5 and Series X are filled with old technology - inefficient x86 CPUs, optical drives, expansion slots, and the massive power supplies needed to feed them. Not to mention the massive heatsinks, heatpipes, and fans

PS5 comes by default without an optical drive.

I agree with the rest of the statement - I get decent gaming performance from a 15” MBP with dedicated internal graphics. Not PS4 level (comparing Borderlands 3 on both systems) but pretty close.

I can only imagine what they could achieve with a box the size of a Mini if they designed it around gaming and on the new chip.

Just report back when it runs lets say Red Dead Redemption with highest details in 4K at 60hz oder higher not whatever is sold as AAA here.

As for the controller, I just got one of the new Nimbus+ controllers from SteelSeries and I really like it. I had a few original Nimbus controllers and the lack of R3/L3 etc. made it unusable in many games, but this new model is superb. Sometimes support is still lacking, I guess because it's a new model.

So yeah, they should give everyone a Nimbus+ in the box for the Pro model.

Thanks for the info, I didn't know they released the Nimbus+. I have the original Nimbus, and its the most comfortable and good quality contruction, even over the Xbox or PS controllers. Yes, Apple should include this in their next Apple TV package.
