Apple is working on a powerful headset that will support both augmented reality and virtual reality applications, according to an inside source that spoke to CNET.

The headset, which is codenamed T288, features an 8K display for each eye that would be untethered from either a computer or a smartphone.

Instead, it would connect to a "dedicated box" using a high-speed short-range wireless technology called 60GHz WiGig. The box would be powered by a custom 5-nanometer Apple processor that's "more powerful than anything currently available" and similar to the custom chips that Apple will use in future Macs. At the current time, the box resembles a PC tower, but it "won't be an actual Mac computer."Users will not need to install special cameras in a room to detect their location as with some available VR headsets. All of the technology will be built into the headset and the box.

Past rumors have suggested that Apple is working on a number of virtual and augmented reality prototypes using a secret research unit, but recent information has been specific to a set of augmented reality smart glasses. It is not clear if the smart glasses mentioned in previous rumors are the same as this new AR/VR headset.

Those rumors have suggested Apple is developing an augmented reality headset with a dedicated display, a built-in processor, and an "rOS" or reality operating system that's controlled using input methods like touch panels, voice activation, and head gestures.

Apple has been heavily focused on augmented reality with the launch of ARKit in iOS 11, and Apple CEO Tim Cook has said multiple times that he believes augmented reality is more important than virtual reality. Augmented reality, says Cook, is the "larger of the two" because it allows people to "be very present," but he has admitted that virtual reality has interesting use cases for education and gaming.

Apple is said to be aiming to launch the headset in 2020, but CNET's source warns that work on the device is in the early stages and plans could be changed or scrapped.

A surgeon after hours of similar work took her Coke can into her forehead, splashing her whole face.

This is the craziest rumor I've read here in several years. Sure, the overall aspects could be correct, but the description of loads of technology which is clearly multiple years down the road, makes this so unbelievable that it is borderline laughable. It is a rumor worthy of Digitimes.

The Apple electric car project would probably take the cake.

This makes total sense. Current iterations of VR are useless for the average consumer. Few people (especially Mac users) are going to shell out big bucks for a PC & headset just to run VR apps and games. Smartphone VR headsets lack power and look like crap.

I wouldn’t expect this to be available any time soon, but it’s the right target. 8k in each eye should render pixels invisible, providing a lifelike image. If no external equipment is needed, it simplifies the purchasing experience. Apple already has the App Store, so an easy way to find & buy apps is in place which will entice developers as wel.

We have 4k per eye now. It's just not mainstream gear. Clunky stuff from China. 8K per eye has already been shown, again, from clunky junk companies in China. So it's possible. The cost of doing 8k fits Apple's pricing profile too. It will be expensive. If people complained about the HomePod price, they mind as well ignore any future Apple AR/VR news.

Thats why I'm laughing at this rumour. it' like cnet/macrumors has a dart board of things to claim and just threw all the darts at it this time.

"fastest cpu for this work" even though that CPU hasn't actually been invented yet.

Wireless technology that can display 2x8k resolutions at the same time.. even if it hasn't been invented yet.

a computer... to power it.. but it's not a computer!... which hasn't been invented yet...

the whole rumour goes on and on with this hilarity.

But it's a slow news day and MR needs to meet it's pro rumour quota for the day.

Would prefer an External High-Res / High-Speed Attachment "Depth Data Map" camera, that leverages the TrueDepth implementation, with a BT link, & a clock sync'd to the iPhone's clock.

If it supported 60 fps, then it would be ideal for crafting pro-grade Sports Highlights !

AND, would probably sell like HotCakes, as it could be priced under $200 !

I know of at least one company working on it ... NOT Apple, though !

Apple Watch, Electric Car, HomePod, now AR and VR.

Tim Cook is really throwing everything against the wall to see what sticks.
Given that there's been no evidence of Apple actually having worked on an electric car (only evidence has been that they're working on autonomous driving - and that could just be a future option on CarPlay), Apple Watch is a bona fide hit (AAPL sold more watches last quarter than the entire Swiss watch industry) and the jury is still out on HomePod, I'm not sure what your point is.

I have been hoping Microsoft will announce a wireless headset for the XBox One X. Obviously not 8K, but with an included transmitter to connect to the XBox. It seems the only practical way to achieve half decent graphics with today's technology. Being tethered to a box would obviously be way too inelegant for Apple, but having a pretty box in the room, maybe not.

All you apparently need to do is claim to be "familiar with Apple's plans" and any number of online publications will publish whatever drivel you tell them.

This rumor makes no sense, whatsoever. Apple wants/needs to sell widgets in the 10s but preferably in the 100s of millions. Nobody (except hardcore gamers or total geeks) is going to want to run around with friggin' VR setup on their head (and belt, given that box the article is talking about). But 10s or 100s of millions of simple glasses with AR capability would sell in a heartbeat (provided Apple doesn't make Google's mistakes with Glass).

Also, Tim Cook has only expressed an interest in AR, not VR. Why do bloggers and financial analysts always ignore what Apple is actually telling them and make up their own stories/numbers??? Clicks I guess.

Would not be shocked at all if Apple has limited working prototypes in their labs. And that a custom Apple-designed cpu is at some stage in development, though not at 5nm today.

The above is certainly something Apple could pull off if they see a market.

No evidence of an Apple electric car? LOL.

Apple hired major swaths of Tesla employees including their VP of Vehicle Engineering. And countless others in the industry including mechanical engineers, transmission design engineers, and airbag and safety engineers (Autoliv), batteries and energy storage (A123) engineers.

These guys were not working on CarPlay or a radio head unit.

2020? No chance. Not with those specs.

Meanwhile, still waiting for a wireless charging mat announced nearly a year ago.

Maybe they’ll announce this in 2020 and it’ll ship in 2022 (Q4...missing Christmas).

8K per eye? Absolute nonsense. One, complete overkill, two, the cost would be completely ridiculous, three, we've just now gotten computers to the point where we can run demanding games at 4K without issue. Unless you can afford a computer with 4 Titan V GPUs (which could maybe run a single 8K display). Something like this would be at least a decade away before the average consumer could afford it.

And still, 8K per eye is massively overkill. The Vive runs 1200X1200 per eye, and thats already pretty crisp. I imagine once you get to 2000X2000-ish per eye, beyond that yields no additional improvement. A better avenue for improving immersion with display technology would be to improve the refresh rate up from 90Hz to 120/144Hz and beyond, and implementing HDR technology.

I really don’t know what to make of your post, you seem like you’re insinuating that a company shouldn’t move forward with technological advances and expand with new products. Not to mention, an electric car has been nothing but rumored and there is no validity behind that. We don’t even know if that ever will be a reality at all.

But since you mentioned the Apple Watch, don’t you think that’s been a highly successful product given it’s completely dominated the smart watch market? So your idea of Tim Cook ‘throwing that around’, Which has been a fairly solid product and it allows the user to stay within the iOS ecosystem as well.

What about AirPods under Tim Cook‘s leadership? Those have been immensely popular and another product that correlates with iPhone perfectly given the battery life and technology Embedded.

As for the HomePod, it’s too early to tell. We know the HomePod likely isn’t going to be everybody’s first choice, but it is a music player first, and it delivers the audio experience. If somebody wants the audio experience, but I’m sure Apple will expand on the HomePod with a smaller/cheaper version eventually.

Who needs an Apple branded TV when you have Apple AR/VR goggles?

BTW I will never buy these unless they have a 3mm audio jack

I'm not too convinced that the company that can't make two of their in-house speakers work together will be able to put out a wireless VR set with these sorts of capabilities anywhere near on time.

Haha, whoever convinced CNET this was worth publishing is laughing right now.

(8K in each eye by 2020? Yeah, no...)

Ok it sounds ridiculous at first, but it is possible if two other rumours are true.
The problems right now would be
a) Rendering a 3D scene at that resolution fast enough to be smooth for VR
b) Making 8k screens small enough for each eye
c) Sending so much data wirelessly to the headset

So the solutions are
1) Foveated rendering using the Eye-tracking patent that surfaced yesterday ( so only a small amount of scene needs to be rendered at the full 8k resolution )
2) Laser projection, similar to HoloLens, so the resolution WOULD be 8k if the whole frame was rendered, but in fact only the high resolution part is rendered at the effective 8k resolution, and the rest at lower resolution.

You can see how this would also solve the 3 problems above.
