8K sounds like overkill, especially for a first version.

Make it support 4 simultaneous headsets at HD for each eye and 60 FPS. Could make something like a holodeck with that. Biggest difference would be the lack of physical contact.

That would be pretty cool. Make it a social thing; that could attract some users. Maybe it could be 8K for 1 person, 4K for 2-3 people, and HD for 4 people, or something like that.

comparing the price tag to the specs of the iMac pro, I have to wonder what apple would charge for the latest hardware to make this unicorn VR experience.

8K in each eye?
I don't buy that for a second.
Outrageously expensive, and complete overkill.

I know.

God I'd love it if this were true for one second, but let's be honest, on what Planet is Apple dedicated to ultra high end graphics systems.

It's all the fault of Steve Jobs I'm sorry to say, and his legacy of not being "Into Gaming/Entertainment" has hung over Apple for decades now :(
It's funny, if Steve was 100% behind the idea of Mac's also being used for entertainment as well as business and creation, the Mac could today be the No.1 gaming system people would want to go for.
But no, he killed that idea from ever happening.

I'd love it, if one day Apple would take GPU's seriously, even make a PROPER ultra high end Console to go up against Sony.
If they could make it amazing. even at a highish cost, they'd sell 100's of millions.

I talked to a few architects a while ago, and they said that they've started using VR to help see plans for their projects. With Apple seeming to go o board with this, hopefully, we'll see VR going even more into architecture and other fields besides games.

Not for much longer. Wall St darlings Amazon and Google will soon eclipse Apple once the market drops APPL to $50 because of the percieved abject failure of the iPhone X.
Then the stockholders will demand Tim Cook resign.
Just one POV.
A very dumb POV that seems more like wishful thinking. Absolute delusional.

Can't make a decent laptop anymore. What do we do?

Umm, quick, what acronyms are the woke kids using these days?

A/R! V/R!

OK spend a tonne of money on that but whatever you do do NOT make a workstation for professionals and do NOT make a laptop that is decent in most respects.

It's what Steve would have wanted. RIP.

Apple Watch, Electric Car, HomePod, now AR and VR.

Tim Cook is really throwing everything against the wall to see what sticks.
Except good laptops. Or desktops.

No budget to get those back up to speed. No time for that.

Why is it overkill? With a screen THAT close to each eye, I'd expect in the future that 8K per eye is minimum. The amount of screen-door effect on the Vive/PS VR currently is insane, and part of the reason I don't own any personally.

I think the biggest problem they will have isn't a technological one, but a content one. They will need to buy some devs to make some quality games for the thing, otherwise this VR games console will end up with thousands of low quality games infested with In App Purchases.

So... we can't find the time to update current Airport devices to the latest WiFi standards, but we'll create a brand new wireless headset that uses advanced wireless networks to deliver 8K content, per eye, through a magical wireless tower system.

Is that what I'm hearing from Apple?

Since when is dual 4K displays 8k? Their custom chip would have to be double the performance of top teir current nvidia. If it’s dual 8k monitors... just forget about performance.

I own a vive and I’m 100% behind anything that brings VR into more homes, but crazy wild statements about performance and the inevitable 3x cost in the form of the Apple tax only hurt.

I have no doubt it will be stunning. On paper.

Not buying the VR headset. What is the point outside of gaming and when has Apple really cared about hardcore gamers?

Might not be feasible by 2020, but it's not overkill by any means. Have you ever used an Oculus Rift or HTC Vive? It's going to take something like 8k per eye for things to start looking like "real world". These are monitors an inch from your eyeballs, after all.

There are also things like FOVeated rendering and eye tracking where the GPU only needs to render at full quality the small portion of the scene you happen to be looking at.

I think there are a number of quality games. But I get what you are saying. The problem for VR will always be a chicken and egg situation. The install base is incredibly small so it’s not worth the investment for many AAA devs. That’s why the vast majority of titles are little more than tech demos from indie devs trying to learn the tech. I just can’t see Apple suddenly developing VR content. Maybe an augmented version of their creative apps, but that’s about it. Garage Band AR/VR is something I could see them demoing in a keynote (and abandoning 2 years later).

A company is lucky to release one revolutionary product in a lifetime. We have been fortunate to release 4: the iPod, the iPhone, the iPad, the Apple Watch and today we’re unveiling the 5th that will change the way people play games forever and we’re calling it: (suspense)

GamePod! It’s based on our custom A series of chips and uses the power of iCloud to deliver to our customers high-end 4K/60 FPS gaming. (Loud applause)

And here from Epic Games is (insert blank) to show off a completely new experience only possible on GamePod.

Now with all of the technology in this package, you’re all wondering what something like this will cost. Well today we’re pleased to announce that the GamePod starts at just $399 for the 256 GB configuration, $599 for 512 GB and for the most hardcore gamers $999 for 1 TB. You can order today and these will be shipping whenever the heck we start to give a damn about gaming!

Given that there's been no evidence of Apple actually having worked on an electric car (only evidence has been that they're working on autonomous driving - and that could just be a future option on CarPlay), Apple Watch is a bona fide hit (AAPL sold more watches last quarter than the entire Swiss watch industry) and the jury is still out on HomePod, I'm not sure what your point is.
CarPlay is basically projecting UI to a display. How is that anything like autonomous driving?

Whenever so many people doubt the plans, the tech or just the ways such a product is useful/any good than it probably is. Because "normal" people just don't have a good enough imagination. I consider myself to be one of them too but I have learned to be very careful to say I know things. In other words: I know that I know nothing. ;-)
