I don’t think it’ll be an issue honestly. While I don’t have dark skin, I regularly use Windows Hello in the dark and it unlocks instantly with my camera. I’m assuming they’ll be using similar technology since my camera uses depth also, it works frighteningly well.
Assuming you have a Surface. These have infrared cameras specifically to work in the dark. That's what the red light is before it unlocks.

I think that cops need a warrant to force you to unlock the phone with fingerprints.
Not sure about facial recognition, as the face is kinda ... public.
The courts (in the US) are in disagreement on this (if your fingerprints are protected from being used for self-incrimination). SCOTUS is yet to hear a case on it.

I'm worried this is true because Gurman is one of the most connected guys out there. In fact, I have no doubt it's true they're testing it. The question is what do they end up going with on iPhone 8?

With no Touch ID, iPhone 8 instantly becomes a no-buy for me. I can think of so many problems going to facial recognition and there's no part of it that sounds more user friendly to use than Touch ID.

IF, and that's a big IF, Apple goes with this I'm sure that they would've tested this multiple times and have it secured. Thus far, Apple has built it's reputation on Security and I can't see them taking a chance on technology that can be easily manipulated, that would harm their reputation for being secure. Surely, this is only a fake lead from Apple to throw people off their trail with the Iphone8.

I hate everything this stands for. The fingerprint is universal, doesn't change, and already works.

Faces change. People grow up, gain/lose weight. Too many variables. This is a solution looking for a problem that they already solved.

I agree with you. Thinner phones at the cost of battery life, or removing the headphone jack? Those I could live with. But the iris/facial recognition I am going to take serious convincing for giving up TouchID. I don't care how good the camera angles are it is going to be less user friendly. Like using Siri in public. Apple is known for hubris, but beta testing this with their flagship product, I would be amazed.

I think this is a really really bad idea for lots of reasons. Hopefully it's not true, at least as stated.

I had, and still have, misgivings about Touch ID, but facial recognition is potentially another level of intrusiveness. It does depend exactly what this is about though, even assuming it is true. If it's just an extra factor in addition to Touch ID and /or passcode, or something that allows multiple users per device (though that would seem more apt for the iPad) then it may have reasonable uses.

This is not a feature I would ever want to use though.

I'm wondering how it'll handle anything that covers your face: hair, (sun)glasses, a hat, a scarf etc.
This would seem like the issue. Unless the phone was doing purely retina scanning (from a distance no less), things like sunglasses and even hats could cause serious problems.

What if we use our iPhone in the night and if we have a black skin ? ;(
You assume it will use available light and the front facing camera. More likely: it'll use infrared or something similar for the "3D sensor" to map your face, much like the LEAP motion uses to track hands. This would also prevent people from simpleyholding up a photo of your face to access the phone.

Before they get rid of Touch ID they will want to have both methods available so they will be able to mass test Facial Recognition surely? I'd say it would be way too risky losing a method that works with something they have never tested before on a released device. Samsung took the safe way, the right way (just put the finger print sensor in a terrible place).

I hope Apple does keep Touch ID, it's such a simple way of unlocking your phone, and it is very reliable. I want to keep that kind of technology in my phone.

So i have to hold my phone up to my face to use ApplePay? If this is the direction they go with the iPone 8, I only have to worry about choosing the 7S or 7S plus this year. Thanks Apple.

So how will contactless payments work then ? I'll be reaching out with my phone to the contactless reader, how on earth will the phone see my face to authorise it. ?

Facial recognition? No way. That'll never be more than a gimmick on a mobile device. Far too impractical for daily use. Can quickly think of several scenarios that make it useless: Apple Pay at terminals that are pointed away from your face, wearing face-obscuring clothes/accessories on your head.

If we don't get Touch ID under the display, it'll be on the back (not likely due to leaks) or on the side (repurposed power button to be the home button).

I'll concur with several other posters. Facial Recognition is important... and it sounds like it's coming... but that doesn't mean it's the right solution (never mind the 'best' solution) for every situation.

Right now I can perform several activities without even looking at my phone.
  1. ApplePay transactions: hold up the phone in a natural hand position with my thumb on the home button. Magic occurs!
  2. ANYTHING while I'm driving! With the phone in my lap and my eyes focused on the road I can unlock the device, bring up siri, etc. All without taking my eyes off the road. Without TouchID... am I going to be forced to LOOK at the damn thing just to initiate what should be a driving friendly activity?

There is a proven solution...

The camera has a pretty wide field of view, and you put the *back* of the phone against the payment reader, so... it's still looking at you.

What if I'm holding my phone over a terminal to pay and the camera can't even see my face?

What about using in the tubes in London, Japan, or heaven forbid if the US ever gets with it on public transportation?

Not nearly enough contact points for a valid recognition on a thin little side power button.

I don't know why anyone would prefer Touch ID to facial recognition as long as the face unlock is just as fast and secure (or better as this article suggests).

Gotta think at least some of the negative replies in here are people who trashed Samsung for their face unlock :D
