Honest question: aren't facial features much easier to replicate than fingerprints?

I mean, if I steal Bill Gates phone and I rush to Madame Tussaud's Wax Museum would i gain access to his bank accounts by taking a selfie with his statue ?
I REALLY hope this happens in real life. That would be more awesome than what was seen in Ocean's 11. Make sure you videotape this.

This is a nice way to say Apple couldn't integrate the touch id under the display lol

I think they found their golden egg.
They will implement a sucky facial recognition, but the iPhone anniversary edition will come bundled with a "special limited edition Apple Watch".

This is one hell of a disaster if true. I hate the idea of this and can't see how this could ever be better than Touch ID. For 1) A fingerprint is unique, whereas two faces can be extremely similar (twins) and current systems aren't too great to say the least.
2) Obstructions on your face such as sun glasses will interfere most likely.
3) It is just more awkward and if you aren't in the field of view of the camera, the features won't work thus Apple Pay will be much less user friendly.

No, no, no! By all means, include it ALONG with Touch ID to see how it works in the real world, etc but do not make it the number 1 (untested) way to access and authenticate on the phone.

Getting tid of youvh id If true it will be another controversial move by Apple…. add on top the cut out on top of the screen.. …

Well all we have to do is wait another 3 months… i hope some of these rumores prove to be wrong ....
Fingers crossed !

I say bs as well but if this really happens I'll buy the 7s Plus.
It would be a real dissapoiment if Apple made some cr*p decision like this.

Last year I did not upgrade to the 7 Plus (upgraded yearly since 2007) and kept my 6s Plus just so the iPhone 8 would blow me away 2x harder, but if Touch ID is gone i'll go with the S line. :)

Bloomberg suggests that Apple is testing this. That can't be the case for a TouchID replacement. It is far to close to launch to see if facial recognition can sufficiently replace TouchID and still have time for a TouchID solution. TouchID would already have to be in place.
That's what I was thinking. If the launch is to indeed be in September, these phones would already be in production.

I'm NOT buying this junk news for the second time today!

If anything the facial thing will be in addition to the touchID.

Why would they go thru the hassle at putting touchid on the Mackbookpros and want to get rid of it on the most bought item in all their products a year later?

I call BS on this news AGAIN!

It really would.

I've got the 7 and really want all the features of the 8 aside from this stupid Face Recognition stuff. If there's no Touch ID then that'll make me lean towards the 7s but then I fear the 7s won't be much of an upgrade for me. For you, it should be quite a decent one though.

Stupid stupid stupid. I feel like Apple is removing the home button just for the heck if it, without any actual good reason. And because of that, they have to figure out a replacement for TouchID. It all just seems really counterintuitive.

At this point, I feel like the most important innovations Apple could implement into their phones are: USB-C, larger battery, AMOLED, higher capacity SSDs, quick charging. They don't have to go above and beyond by making a lame-A "edgeless" screen that ultimately removes helpful features from the device. That's anti-innovation.

I hate everything this stands for. The fingerprint is universal, doesn't change, and already works.

Faces change. People grow up, gain/lose weight. Too many variables. This is a solution looking for a problem that they already solved.

The casinos in Vegas use facial recognition and have for years. When you say that people's faces change and gain/lose wait you are forgetting the primary part of facial recognition. The distance and features of the eyes never change. Even with plastic surgery, colored contacts, that part of a persons face never changes from about the age of being a teenager until old age. People that have been blacklisted from casinos have tried to change their facial features, but the computers pick them out of a crowd and from looking down extremely quick.

Not sure what the big deal is with facial recognition? IF it fails, the system would certainly have backup pin number access. I recently bought a MS Surface 4 Pro, mainly because it was recently on sale for $850 verses $1299 for the new MacBook. The Surface has facial recognition, but it does have one problem. I first set it up with my glasses on and now I have to be wearing my glasses or it fails, resulting in my having to enter my pin number (which is faster than facial recognition anyway).

So assuming it works perfectly, for Apple Pay you'll have to hold your phone next to the contact unit while putting your face over it? That's dumb. Or bring it up to your face after holding it to the unit? Dumb too. With Touch ID it's done in one fell swoop. Changing this is only going to make Apple Pay adoption even slower.

Also on the bezel-less design-- its fine for portrait orientation because you don't touch the bezels holding the phone that way, but say you're watching a video or taking a picture in landscape with one hand, how do you hold your phone without covering part of the screen or tapping a button? The most comfortable and secure way to hold it in landscape is with your thumb on the bezel. It is also very easy to move from portrait to landscape with one hand when you have the bezel there. It just seems foolish to give up this very practical design aspect for the sake of a subjective aesthetic choice. I for one would miss the bezel if it goes.

I do not like this at all. Face recognitioning is way easier to beat than fingerprints. Say someone tries to force you to unlock your phone, well after 5 wrong prints, the phone has to be unlocked by entering a code. For example, law enforcement can force you to press your fingers on the TouchID sensor. So with facial recognitioning, they just place the phone in front of your face, and they are in. I do not like this at all. Its enabling severe privacy breaches. I really hope these rumors are BS, we will all se the real product later.. Keeping my fingers crossed.

Most of what you mentioned isn't innovative........only ProMotion and higher capacity SSDs on a device with a limited file manager app will be seen as innovative since many phones have had these features for a couple years.

I think that cops need a warrant to force you to unlock the phone with fingerprints.
Not sure about facial recognition, as the face is kinda ... public.

They have the right to fingerprint you already and were using this as cause to forcibly use your fingerprint to unlock your phone.

I dunno, it's getting awfully close to needing to put it into production. I'm not sure how likely it is they're still messing with this stuff, surely the design must be close to final by now.
