Not sure what the big deal is with facial recognition? IF it fails, the system would certainly have backup pin number access.

Of course it will have backup PIN access.

But I can count on one hand the number of times my fingerprint failed with TouchID and I had to enter my PIN. And this goes all the way back to the iPhone 5S.

Why? It's because TouchID works great. It's simple. It's wonderful.

So I'm a little worried that Apple will get rid of something wonderful to replace it with us waving our phones in front of our faces.

What if we use our iPhone in the night and if we have a black skin ? ;(

It really depends on the technology. If it is using IR alone, then, you'll be fine, but, security will be lower (a high quality 3d print could bypass it). If it is using a dual camera solution without IR, you may end up having some trouble. If they are using a mix of IR and the camera, you may have some trouble as well, although, less likely.

Personally, if these rumors are true, I won't be using it. While I've seen it work really well (with things like Intel's RealSense), I'd much rather have the security of not having it.

Also, I often unlock my Apple Watch using my Touch ID while my phone is in my pocket. I know that's a small convenience, but, small things like that are things that could make not having Touch ID a big issue. I hope the reality is that they are just using both.

No Touch ID = no iPhone 8 purchase for me. Even if it works extremely well, it'll be even easier to trigger accidentally than Touch ID (or intentionally, like by annoying "friends" who pick your phone up and point the camera at you across the desk/table).

Picturing the hilarity of using this for Apple Pay at a register.

No, I'm not checking myself out, I'm just checking myself out.

I have to believe it'll be supplementary with, as many others have said, the Touch ID sensor on the back or elsewhere if not embedded. Using a fingerprint is just too convenient to be sacrificed at the altar of the bezel-less gods.

How would Apple Pay work? Well you buy an Apple Watch of course... :p;)

Hmm.. currently lying in bed on pillow face half covered thinking this may not work.

Also surely the banks have taken 4 years to trust and integrate Touch ID and a new security method is going to be a big no no?

ive never seen so many panicked worry-warts as on MR. the article even says if they were doing this it would work while laying flat on a table, you wouldnt have to hold it up to your face. yeah reading is hard.

This may very well explain the awkward implementation of the Notifications pull-down in iOS 11.

When picking up the phone, if there is nothing to “do” at the lock screen (e.g., the iPhone visually recognizes and authenticates the user, who can interact with notifications as one pleases without having to push/scan any sort of unlock mechanism) then there is no perceived “lock screen” in the first place - it’s the same as looking at the new Notifications pull-down.

Pick up your phone and have alerts/notifications? Interact with them like nothing was ever locked, because the phone already authenticated you visually. Using your phone and pull down from the top of the screen? Same thing and same look.

Seems ridiculous to replace an easy, quick and secure method as Touch ID, with something like Face Recognition. I'm not saying FR has a place/use. But, imagine having to position your iPhone and while doing this, position the iPhone over the payment terminal for to use Apple Pay.

I didn't skip the 7+ for a facial rec phone that will be absolutely awkward using Apple Pay. Am I to shove my face close to the terminal now just to buy chips? The harrah!!!!

I still don't think this will happen but then again, Apple has been known to do whatever the hell they want and set a standard that others usually follow. In this case, others will just follow them on towards the cliff and jump cause this is business suicide...

I can't imagine a facial recognition system that would work. Why? Well...
  1. acne
  2. sunburn
  3. shaving
  4. condensation on cold lens after one enters a warm store
  5. sweat and/or raindrops on face
  6. cosmetics
  7. glasses vs contacts (when I wear my specs one can practically see around my head...)
  8. puffiness (hangovers, pregnancy, sleep deprivation, allergies, colds,...)
  9. simple expression of emotion
  10. jewellery and piercings
  11. tattoos
Obviously I don't know any of Apple's algorithms and I am no expert, but the factors above must introduce some noise into the system. Indeed, cosmetics are often shaded in such a way as to create a 3-D impression. The only way around this would be to use something like motion parallax, and we'd all look like fools waving a phone in front of our face.

Let's have a little faith people. I'm sure Apple will have some kind of biometric solution that works as well if not better than the current solution; They have a patent to use the power button for Touch ID, for example.

To think Apple would come up with some half baked solution to replace something that they've worked hard to perfect is downright silly.

I don't know so much about that anymore... This is 2017 Apple we're talking about, they've already made plenty of silly decisions. But I do feel confident they won't muck this up. I mean how can they, right?... Right?

I think that cops need a warrant to force you to unlock the phone with fingerprints.
Not sure about facial recognition, as the face is kinda ... public.

The same warrant would be needed to unlock it with your face since they would be forcing you to do something. But I would assume that the same rules would be in place as with touch id. So after a period of time were you don't unlock your phone with your finger print or face with this phone a password is required then they can't do anything because they can't force you to give the password you... forgot.

Most of what you mentioned isn't innovative........only ProMotion and higher capacity SSDs on a device with a limited file manager app will be seen as innovative since many phones have had these features for a couple years.

Um, ALL of what I mentioned is indeed innovative. They're all really amazing features that don't exist in iPhones yet. Innovation isn't just developing something new. It's taking pre-existing technologies and combining them in a way that makes an amazing product. As-is, Apple isn't even doing that. They're keeping with old hardware and old features, whilst introducing gimmicky features that no one cares about (edgeless screen and face detection), and removing helpful features (TouchID, headphone jack).

Simply put, making products worse is NOT innovation. Combining existing technologies to create the ultimate new device IS innovation.
