I bought an open box Studio Display 4 months ago for 1/3 of the price, and I can say that regardless of it being ""old"" tech, it is an absolutely stunning display for every purpose. I also have a 27" retina iMac from 2015 that I use almost every day, and that display is still stunning. Nothing beats 5K retina to be honest. All that said though, I would never pay full price for the studio.

The real kicker is going to be price.

Between miniLED (likely), tandem OLED (not likely big enough yet), and QD-OLED (maybe not good enough for Apple)... there are lots of options.

I just imagine that Apple will launch a new Apple Studio Display, say it is better than the XDR, and then sell it for $2500, calling it a deal.

Maybe Apple should work on bringing live presentations back instead of the lifeless whatever the frick we are watching everyyear since 2020
With the current AI situation I doubt Apple will be doing anything live. Imagine any of the current execs getting heckled by an (understandably) disenchanted developer/user, then completely knocking it out of the park.

Back to monitors, the panel will likely still be from Samsung or LG, so how much "working on" do your teams need for the case?

No one cares about the backlighting, or whether its miniled, qled, oled or ballsackLED. Fix the freaking refresh rate. No one with an IQ over 10 is buying a 60hz monitor in 2026.

LOL; I want >=120hz just as much as the next guy and I definitely would not upgrade my 27" ASD just because they improved contrast and backlighting through other display technologies. However, if they released a more affordable 32" 6k that was still 60hz, I would certainly be a buyer in 2026. I guess that means my IQ is south of 10.

Agreed! They should have released the display along side the new Mac Studios. Lots of 2025 Mac Studio buyers are in a tough spot trying to find a monitor right now to pair with their new Mac Studio cuz they don't want to buy the aged ASD now. They missed the timing and it's really annoying.

It could be that the J427 is with miniLED
Wheres J527 is with OLED

In CES Samsung actually announced a 5k OLED panel is going to be a thing, but not projected release date. It is likely that Apple started the Studio Display on miniLED, but then Samsung came midway with an OLED so Apple now seriously look into just jumping on it.

I care WAY more about the better contrast miniLED would bring than going from 60 -> 120hz
I’ve always wanted to do a blind comparison of 60 and 120Mhz - something like here are 6 monitors any number of them could be 60 or 120MHz. Please write down which are which.

(Then make them all 60Mhz, if you are feeling assholish.)

There will be two new 27" displays.

1. 27" Studio Display (Mini-LED, 120Hz)
2. 27" Studio Display Air (Same as the original Studio Display, but thinner & lighter.)

Apple is rumored to be planning a second-generation Studio Display with mini-LED backlighting for release later this year, or early next year. That monitor is codenamed J427 within Apple, according to Bloomberg's Mark Gurman.

In his Power On newsletter today, Gurman said that Apple seemingly has even bigger plans in regards to external displays.

Specifically, he said that Apple is working on an additional monitor, codenamed J527.

However, he is not sure what this additional monitor will end up being, so it is a mystery for now. He speculated that Apple could be developing two different second-generation Studio Display models, and will eventually choose which one to launch. Alternatively, he guessed that the J527 model could be a second-generation Pro Display XDR.

The current Pro Display XDR launched in 2019, and the Studio Display followed in 2022.

Every Gurman report is a mystery to be honest

I’m still on a Thunderbolt Display, and while I was tempted to upgrade to a Studio Display for Retina, no ProMotion and no HDR (plus a crap camera) were deal breakers. Hopefully now is the time.

The current 27” and 32” 4K 240hz OLED monitors will eat whatever overpriced DOA trash apple releases as monitor with equally lame sounding names like Pro XDR Ultra Neophoenix Retina Thundercat.
Unless someone values the 5k aspect. Even now, 5k monitors from other makers are not cheap.

Better have 120 hz refresh rate or will be DOA for people that already own a ASD

I have absolutely no need for 120 Hz refresh in a display that I primarily use for accurately processing my image files for subsequent printing. Which is where ASD shines.

My 2 year old ASD is outstanding if you’re fussy about color and easily making accurate prints - first time, every time.

I think many here don’t understand who the market is for ASD.

I'd love a 32" 5k display, if such a thing is possible. I'd also like a display that permits easy switching between a Mac and a Windows computer (which should also be able to control the display).
