yea, except for

longevity (burn-in)
dark grey uniformity
HDR brightness
build quality
77% more pixels of 5K versus 4K
burn-in isn't a that big of a issue anymore with the 2nd gen QD-oled. Woled is even better.
i haven't personally witnessed much dark grey uniformity issues but there are reports that it's panel dependent.
HDR brightness so far seems to be a OSX issue, on windows 11 HDR works like magic.
build quality- again it depends how rigid of a standard you are telling the suppliers, the ones in alienware is pretty high.
i went from 218ppi to 140ish ppi and the trade off is only noticeable if you sit a foot away and try to make out whatever blurriness there is, once you get accustomed to it you won't even know its there.

...I primarily use for accurately processing my image files for subsequent printing. Which is where ASD shines.
As does about two dozen other models of monitors that cost half as much as the ASD. Heck, I have a pair of BenQ BL-Series monitors I bought back in the 2010's that would give ASDs a run for their money in terms of colour accuracy, and the two of them were still less expensive than a single ASD.

Apple hasn't had a monopoly on colour accuracy since the late 1990s.

I think many here don’t understand who the market is for ASD.
I think most people here understand who the target market for the ASD is. The problem is, most people who are actually part of that target market don't find the description of that target market very flattering.

The fact that all the current Studios and Pro/Max MBPs have TB5 means they now have the transmission bandwidth for 5k@120 Hz and 6k@120 Hz without needing much compression.

The remaining issue is the Display Engines. Apple currently says they can drive "8K resolution at 60Hz or 4K resolution at 240Hz" (those require the same bandwidth).

A 5k@120 only requires 78% of the bandwidth of 8k@60/4k@120, so the current Display Engines have the processing power for that. Thus, if Apple is planning to release a 5k@120 in 2025, they've probably built in the capability to drive 5k@120 with a firmware update.

That might also be the case for 6k@120, which requires only 13% more bandwidth than 8k@60/4k@120.

I really hope this new display has a notch. I love how every display of the entire MacBook line has a notch. I will never criticize Tim Cook because he can do no wrong.
[/sarcasm]
You joke but I honestly would much prefer that over the bezels they currently have. The thick bezels just look so ugly. Just go edge to edge and give it a notch, would look sleek in my opinion.

The monitor options the better! I do hope we see a nice update to the Studio Display and Pro Display. Asking too much to get miniLED backlighting and 120Hz for both?
I won’t be buying until they offer those two.

INNOCN has been shipping 4K miniLED monitors for a while now. I have the 27M2V, 160Hz refresh, 1,152 dimming zones giving HDR1000, 99% DCI-P3 color. $430. The monitor is almost too bright. Sure, the build quality is meh (shaky plastic), it could have more zones to prevent visible blooming effects (dark scenes particularly suffer)--but $430.

Apple's version of miniLED is superior (there are many more zones on a much-smaller 16" MacBook Pro display), but the INNOCN will tide me over until Apple releases something that actually beats the INNOCN on a couple of different specs. I can't see buying a monitor without miniLED or OLED, and >60Hz, with at least 5K or 6K depending upon size.

I just don't understand why they didn't take the MBP display, scale it up to 27" or 32", and release that as a desktop monitor. Or now that tandem OLED is out, use that (with a burn-in guarantee).

Might be next year along with a new Mac Pro. Expecting same price to continue. Will be nice to have 120Hz on the Studio Display.

No. Color accuracy is a main in here for professional works. Asus ProArt monitors are also expensive but most of the top versions are not offering OLED as a display option. You say that 240 HZ OLED monitors will eat these overpriced ones?

Asus are putting on sale a 32" Pro Art OLED 240HZ monitor in April. They are also launching an 8K Mini LED Pro Art monitor. Whether they are as good as Apples monitors I don't know.

Maybe Apple should work on bringing live presentations back instead of the lifeless whatever the frick we are watching everyyear since 2020
Indeed. if that's the case, apple wouldn't even have the chance to cheat us on apple intelligence like conversational siri

I cannot tell the difference between the different pixel types. But I have two Apple Sutido Displays on my primary computer and other than wishing I could get audio from both simultaneously, they are the best monitors I have ever had or come across.
Just a heads up, you can get audio from both ASD's simultaneously, using Loopback (see attached link with instructions). Using this method, I have my two Studio Displays set up as stereo speakers - works great 👍🏼

No one cares about the backlighting, or whether its miniled, qled, oled or ballsackLED. Fix the freaking refresh rate. No one with an IQ over 10 is buying a 60hz monitor in 2026.
I care a hell more about the black levels than about those Herz. When not looking at my MacBook I forget that higher refresh rates even exist tbh. What would be really needed is better connectivity (hdmi/sdi) and OLED/more zones on the XDR. I agree that it would be nice to have higher hz on the studio display and mini led tho.

I had to go for a cheaper 4K monitor for my new Studio (my budget will only stretch so far). It’s a perfectly adequate monitor. However, once my finances recover, I could well see myself looking at a higher quality screen in, maybe, six months or so. If Apple have something to offer (preferably closer to £1,000 than £1,500), they’ll be my first port of call. They only have to make it happen.
I face a related dilemma... I bought a high end 4k monitor 10 years ago... build like a tank and solid performer (note I don't game)... it's rock solid and likely would last another 10+ years... the current ASD doesn't do enough for me to dump a perfectly great monitor... I'm hoping the update (e.g. miniLED lighting) will be enough to self-rationalize this totally unneeded upgrade.

Ordering my Mac Studio next week so need a monitor now TBH. Will most likely just order the current ASD. I never even noticed and increase in Hertz and 'Promotion' etc on my other devices so doubt I would a monitor (not used for gaming) so they dont bother me. For me, its more the color and the deeper blacks that would have been nice, but as much as it pains me, I don't think I can wait another year in the hope of an update at this point.

I won’t be buying a new studio display until the screen size increases.

>27”, promotion 120hz, at least mini-LED

need all three of those conditions. The panel in the studio display is nearing ten years old. It’s time.
Need promotion, hdr, 120hz and for less money than a fairly loaded MacBook Pro.

Pro Display XDR was impressive in 2019. Now it isn’t.

We wish. Base price would be 3-4 times that, and fully configured over $17k.

Solid prosumer here, and I’d be highly interested in a 27” M5. Bigger than that the price goes into the stratosphere and I’d have trouble justifying it.
Historically in my 25 years of using the Mac all parts prices goes down over time.

Likely reason why there isn't a iMac 32" 6K when the 2021 iMac 24" 4.5K M1 came out is that it hasn't reached the target price point.

I have absolutely no need for 120 Hz refresh in a display that I primarily use for accurately processing my image files for subsequent printing. Which is where ASD shines.

My 2 year old ASD is outstanding if you’re fussy about color and easily making accurate prints - first time, every time.

I think many here don’t understand who the market is for ASD.
Yes there is. I upgraded my pro machines to 120 Hz to assist with eye strain. Suggested by my eye doctor. Never looking back. Even moving my mouse around I can tell a 60Hz display.

Then you should use a 120 Hz display. For post-processing thousands of photographs a 60 HHz refresh display works great for me.

As an aside... Apple's Pro Display XDR, a high-end display targeting professionals for use in image and video editing/processing, is also 60 Hz.

If i was buying a monitor and had a choice between 60hz oled and 120hz lcd I’d take the oled every time without question

Does anyone remember the rumor / patent filed a few years ago around a Microsoft surface laptop studio style touch screen? Could this possibly be still in the works?
