Top 2 changes I want to be seeing:
  1. The insane charging port on the bottom. How was this ever a good idea?
  2. Return to a removable, replaceable battery. I refuse to buy any mouse that doesn't accept AA/AAA (or similar, easily obtainable, easy to install) batteries.
If Apple wants to change the shape... Logitech M705/M720 is my preference the last many years. Microsoft's (former) Bluetooth Ergonomic Mouse was too large and oddly shaped, painful to use... Their much older Laser 6000 was fine.

I have the Logitec MX Master as a *backup* for when my Magic Mouse needs to charge.

YMMV but aside from the charging port I love the Magic Mouse. I use both vertical and horizontal scrolling all the time in many different apps and find the MM pretty perfect for this.

Pun slightly intended but comparing those two mice is not Apples to Apples...they are totally different kinds of mouse so it really comes down to preference.

That's an expensive backup, considering the tiny proportion of time the Magic Mouse spends charging.

I always considered the brouhaha about the charging port complete idiocy, BTW. My gripe with the Magic Mouse is its ergonomics. Apart from being too flat for my hand, the combination of mouse (which needs to move effortlessly) and touch surface (which needs to stay in place) makes it finicky to work with. I tend to cramp up after a short while doing side-to-side swipes while trying to hold it still.

The Apple mouse I liked using the most was the Mighty Mouse, the one with the nipple-like scroll ball. I found it very functional and pleasant to use. Alas, the tiny ball was a dirt magnet and would eventually stop working.

For the record, I do not like the ergonomics of the Logitech MX "Monster" 3S, either. It's too bulky and has too many points of interaction spread too far apart. I'd rather take something cheap(er) and cheerful, like a G203.

So the meme complaints caught on to the top. More diverted RnD money for no reason I guess.

It’s more they got the engineering teams out of the tyrannical regime enforced by Jony “slim” Ive.

This might probably be released alongside a bigger iMac hopefully. Meanwhile would like Apple to sell the colored Magic mouse and keyboard separately.

Why nobody complains about the polish surface, which makes it hard to swipe scroll, it should've been a matte surface.

Charging port, to be honest was never a big issue to me, battery onced charged goes on for very long and it reminded for charging once its low.

Middle mouse button was a big issue for me as whatever pro apps i used, all require some controls through scroll and click of middle button, because of which i have to keep another mouse, logitech, which also is a silent mouse which allows me to work while others are sleeping.

But regular surfing and browsing Magic mouse is pretty good experience i think.

There's literally nothing wrong with the design as is. Nothing in my life would improve if I were able to use the mouse while charging. Just plug it in when not in use, just like an apple watch. I don't wish I could use that while a cable hung off it either.

Am I the only person who hates those gargantuan Logitech mouses? The MX Master 3 looks hideous. I have a G703 that I don't use because it's like trying to draw with a potato. I much prefer my Razer Atheris. It's much more compact and comfortable.

I had an old old oooold (15 years old?) Logitech MX620 (with black laser somethings tracking), it had the old logo and it was wonderful to use. It fit my hand PERFECTLY. And it broke….I was actually distraught.

As I have itsy bitsy tiny hands (not really, but they’re not big) and I always feared the MX Masters was too big.

So I bought one M330. TOO SMALL. And not good for purpose. Couldn’t return. Then tried the cheap MX, the M705. But it didn’t feel “right” or good in my hand, too plasticky. The wheel sukd. So I bit the bullit. I got the MX3S.

It’s shorter lengthwise compared to the 620, which felt “not as good” in the beginning , but it’s not noticeable now and way better than the 705. And the wheel is awesome. Although I actually think the wheel is better on the 620, ut I digress.

The MX fit my hands (smallish) perfectly and it’s wonderful to use.

It’s just slightly embarrassing being Apple, that they couldn’t figure it out. And it looks ridiculous lying dead upside down on the desk. Just make it MagSafe already.

I'm amazed the charging port caused more controversy than the atrocious ergonomics
Yeah I find the mouse design a DISASTER from human interface usage. That is, for me, the hard edges always irritate my fingers, the low profile is not what my hand wishes.
Granted, it doesn't need to be charged often, but comeon Apple, making the mouse unusable while being charged? This is tech UI which other companies have figured out decades ago.

Oh, I know, it's because Apple execs NEVER have to charge their Magic Mouses, because there is a dedicated over-night task force whose SOLE purpose is to go into the offices and ensure all magic mice are turned over and charged up! Like elves!!

I use the MM and the Logi MX (as well as Trackpad, that vertical mouse by Logi and Wacom)… but the device I intuitively use most often is the Magic Mouse. The interaction with the OS and v/h scrolling, especially when boosted by Better Touch, makes any windows mouse feel subpar. I like the programmable buttons on the MX and the shape is more ergonomic (if clumsy), but I think it means something that my hand prefers the Magic soap bar.

I'm glad you like it, I'm sure there are many people for whom they are good options. Personally, I can't use them.

I also used to use a Logitech MX620 back in the day, and I liked it too. I used it until it died. I ended up with a white M557. That was a great mouse. I used that until I wore it out too, and I got the G703, because I had good memories of the MX620. If I use it long enough I kinda get used to it, but it's too cumbersome. The Razer Atheris is a good size, it reminds me of the M557.

To be clear, the G703 is a great mouse, I just wish it was smaller, or contoured better, or both. It really feels like I'm trying to control my computer with a potato.

They will definitely rethink the usb port position. Probably move it to the very top of the mouse instead.

I have RSI for over 25 years now. I can tell you: any mouse where you have to "bend" your wrist upwards is NOT ergonomic and makes your RSI worse. I love my Magic Mouse.

That was always my issue with it. Don't really care about the charging port location (though admit it isn't great design), and I liked the gestures (which I'm sure the new mouse will have too). But the ergonomics just didn't work for me. Uncomfortable to use compared to almost any other mouse option.
Buy the glue-on bumpers/handles. Huge upgrade.

This would be awesome, I have a magic keyboard on my desk sitting right above my regular keyboard literally just for touchid
I used my Apple Watch to automatically unlock my Mac.

I suppose it works well in a home office context, but might be less desirable/secure in a multiuser office

People are free to like/dislike the ergonomics as everybody is different with different needs.

However you can get around the mouse being objectively poor performance with such poor tracking accuracy.
