No obvious battery performance issues, but ...

... I'd really like Apple to fix the forever sync error in the last stage of syncing: "waiting for items to sync" or whatever it is. I end up cancelling the sync. Every time.

One definite problem is the Setting Time Zone function in Locations (under system services). It never turns off location searching so it drains the battery. Turning off the Time Zone feature eliminates that particular problem.

This doesn't seem to be true for my 4S.

When I look at my location services screen, with the Setting Time Zone "On," there is neither a purple location services indicator (which would indicate that Setting Time Zone is currently using location services) nor a grey icon (which would indicate that Setting Time Zone has used location services within the past 24 hours).

At work, i usually don't have any signal.

When I upgraded to iOS5 on my iPhone 4, My battery life was a bit better. I usually have the iPod on the whole time. After 8hrs, i'm at approx 75% vs the ~60% before iOS5.

So far, so good.

You can......

Settings -> General -> Network -> "Cellular Data". When you shut that off and you're not connected to wifi, you'll see that the 3G symbol is gone. :D

If you do that you'll remain connected to the 3G network which will use more power than the 2G network.

The "Cellular Data" toggle does exactly what it says - it disables sending and receiving data over any cellular network (2G or 3G).

Having come to the 4S from a 3GS I find battery life to be vastly better. Ive got everything turned on except Bluetooth

i found my 3gs battery was better than this 4s one.. i had to buy a recharge case for it!

My iPhone 4s battery is terrible

I upgraded on launch day and I have noticed my battery decreasing at almost 10% every 2 hours with very little usage. It is far worse than my iPhone 4. I was going to raise this at some point with Apple but this post confirms my experiences aren't just me.

I am charging my new iPhone 4s 3 times a day and this is from a clean install with only 3 pages of apps now.

Ahhhh...I stand corrected. Thanks for clarifying!

What about the static?

My battery life is actually absolutely perfect -- way better than my 3GS.

The problem is static/white noise when talking on the phone/voice memo recordings, etc.

There a couple of lengthy threads in Apple Support Discussions and no one has figured out if it is software or hardware. Plenty of reports of iPhone 4Ses exchanged and the new ones being just as bad.

As long as the phone makes it from say 6AM - Midnight I cant see a problem.

My temporary, cheapo Android (ZTE-Blade w/ custom ROM) struggles to make it 12 hours but still does the job.

Is this set to become 'Batterygate'? :p

My iPhone 4's battery life has been phenomenal under IOS5. With low activity, it may drain 1-3% per hour on standby.

I have bluetooth turned on but Wifi Off - permanently. All iCloud services sync and push.

no problem here!

make sure you turn on off location services for a bunch of stuff though.

I wish people would stop saying that. Most of the location services don't even get used. It's not location services. They've been around before the 4s. Please.

And I can believe apple didn't notice abysmal battery life in their testing. Especially considering they had extra time.

I have been following this issue for a while. If this is a software issue wouldn't there be one fix that works for everyone? Also, the vast majority of complaints come from 4S users. Hmmm...

Informing Apple

Is there any way to inform Apple directly that battery life is poor on the iPhone 4S? My battery life isn't what I expected.

Turn off iCloud Contact syncing. My iPhone 4 battery was dying from 100% thrice daily. I used iPhone Configuration Utility and pulled the console logs, and it's sending out multiple error reports every two or three seconds regarding iCloud and contact sync services. Turned that off, and all of the sudden my iPhone held a charge for two days again.

I think MobileME to iCloud must have some bugs because I had two phones both upgraded at the same time and going from MobileME to iCloud. One of the phones started to drain out 100% every 4-5 hours, whereas the other phone behaved the same as before the upgrade, which is about 50% per day.

I tried everything, ranging from turning off notifications, location services, to full wipe and restore. Nothing fixed it. What ended up fixing the issue was removing the iCloud account and re-adding it. The problem was immediately resolved.

I think the problem has to do with a software bug, not the fact that any particular iCloud feature is turned on. I have all data synch turned on and after re-adding the iCloud account, both iPhone 4 are performing superb.

4GS = Fail

I'm not complaining, but I came from the original iPhone to the 4s. Battery life on the original was far better, even at 3.5 years old. Glad I got my Mophie case!

This worked for me

I was having huge battery problems - 10%/hour drain while in standby. I tried disabling the features that most blamed, but no luck. (Who wants an iPhone just to disable features anyway?)

I found that a DFU reset, followed by a restore from icloud (not the computer) and then a sync (for music and photos) workedf like a charm. Now I get normal battery life with all features on.

Bad battery life for me. I would get up at 6am with 100% charged phone and by the time it is 3pm it will be below 40%. That is with minimal use! If I make phone calls and search the web etc.. it will need a charge! 3GS was better!

And you just FAILED on the Name ! Its 4S not 4GS

Battery life.

I believe since I updated to iOS 5 that my battery life is still the same and possibly a little less. I believe with all the new features and apps that people use the drain is growing with each update. Example, Notifications. Depends on how you have it configured but if you use it as designed its popping up messages which turns the screen on and off a lot. That will make a difference throughout the day.

Bottom line... no battery issue. As someone said earlier, stop playing with your phone so much. :)

Battery Percentage = 75%

Time since last full charge
Usage 1 Hour, 41 Minutes
Standby 7 Hours, 34 Minutes

4S on Verizon

I have had absolutely no battery issues with my 4S that I received on launch day. The other night I watched about 2.5 hours of Netflix on it over WiFi and only lost about 15% of my battery. I can easily go a day and a half with out a charge. I have everything turned on except Bluetooth.
