No way does anyone have a problem with their iPhone 4S. This is Apple we're talking about. People are probably charging it wrong.

i was having to charge mine three and four times a day on the washington coast. my mother with my old i4 was still once a day if that while running ios5.
even back at my house in tennessee with great reception i was charging twice a day. needless to say, i dont own a 4s anymore.

My iPhone 4's battery life has been phenomenal under IOS5.

What helped me...

Things that helped omprove my battery life of my 4S have been:

1) turning off Bluetooth.
2) running the battery to fully flat three times
3) using Siri less :)
4) turned off unwanted notifications

When I got my 4S it wouldn't last the day, but now easily gets thru the day.

Also, early on it lost 28% sitting idle overnight. But las night, for example, it only lost 2%

My personal impression is turning off Bluetooth made the biggest difference. I suspect it must be polling for devices too much. However, I haven't tested that theory by turning it on again.

I might add, my 3GS also had poor battery life to begin with. So maybe it's the few fully discharge cycles that makes the difference.

It's a simple solution....

Myself, my wife and my sister all had this issue when we got our new 4S.....all I did was let the battery completely discharge (run out and turn itself off), then complete a full recharge to 100%.......now I only go through 30-40% per day, rather than 80% and I am quite a heavy user with Push and Location Services turned on for everything, also run with Wifi and Bluetooth on the whole time, and use Siri quite frequently whilst driving..........give it a try.....it worked for the three of us. :):)

People that are saying "Turn off this" and "Turn off that" - you may well be saving some battery life, but the whole point of owning an iPhone is that it does all of these things! It should be able to cope with iCloud, e-mail, location services, siri, etc, without having to disable them.

My iPhone 4S gets HOT when in use, also it has only had 2:30 hours of usage and it is now on 49%, so not great.

Though, I must admit, doing a full restore and then NOT restoring from backup did seem to help a bit. Also, I turned off Location for setting the time - it seemed to be permanently stuck on, and it has stemmed the battery loss slightly.

Wirelessly posted (Mozilla/5.0 (iPhone; CPU iPhone OS 5_0 like Mac OS X) AppleWebKit/534.46 (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/5.1 Mobile/9A334 Safari/7534.48.3)

Developer here. My iPhone 4 got hot and drained the battery on every beta prior to the final release of ios5. My solution - inexplicably - was to "reset all settings" under settings>general. Then do a full reboot. If it didn't work, do it again. It resolved until the next beta release. Solved my problem everytime. There was no indication of a rogue process running in the background, but my memory wasnt releasing and continuing to be accessed causing the drain. Good luck.

I see that a lot of posts about people having battery life issues after upgrading to iOS5 are getting voted up and posts about turning off iCloud features getting voted down. I haven't had any battery issues since upgrading my iPhone 4 to iOS 5 but I have most iCloud features turned off. I really do hope I don't notice a significant drop in battery life with the 4S which I have already ordered and waiting for to arrive.

My battery life on my 4S has been absolutely abysmal.

If you unplug it and it is idle the phone will go down by 10% ina little over an hour even with full service.

Apple, please fix it.

At least Apple tries...

Well, at least Apple is attempting to address the issue. The going theme in the Android community to address excessive battery drain issues seems to be the following.

A) Root the phone.
B) Carry around extra battery
C) Use an extended battery which adds size and weight to the phone
D) Use any number of additional apps to manage battery usage.

No thanks.

my iPhone 4S has some battery life issues as well. My old iPhone 4 lasted much longer. I plug my phone in overnight, so not sure about the over-night drain, but the drain through the day is significantly faster than I am used to.

After reading around this forum, I turned off iCloud contacts, iCloud Docs and data > cellular network, and location services time zone.

These seem to be the most popular ideas for the problem. Although I also agree with other posts that my 4S is dropping wifi all the time, never saw this on the 4. This wifi searching could be draining, I do spend most of my day everyday in wifi areas.

Seems the likely problem is iCloud issues (corrupted contacts causing nasty loop issues eating battery) and wifi drops.

Dual Core... same problem as the iPad 2

My iPad 1 outlasts my iPad 2 and I long ago surmised it was due to the Dual Core in the iPad 2. It has to be the same thing with the iPhone 4S.

I use my 4S the exact same way I used my 3GS (I also had a 3G before that) and I get BETTER battery life from my 4S than either of the previous two, while using it the exact, same way!

I am not a stranger to critizing Apple (I bought an iPhone 4 and had to return it due to dropped calls/crappy reception......I've knocked Apple and the iPhone 4 here), but I am pleasantly surprised by my iPhone 4S battery life...

Additionally, I really love the whole/entire iPhone 4S experience, much improved over my short iPhone 4 stint........

I really wish Apple could test their iPhones more thoroughly before they release them. It seems like their has been major issues with their last 2 phones. While I had antenna problems with my iPhone 4, I don't think I'm having the battery issues some are having (but I do have everything shut off, basically turning my 4S back into a 4).

I find that my 4S battery life stinks compared to my 3GS. I would argue that my 4S battery life gets sucked down almost twice as fast. The settings of the 2 phones are the same as far as I can tell. I probably make 20 mins worth of calls a day...a few iMessages a day...check my email every hour. Surf 2-3 of the same webpages 4-5 times a day (weather, news). Not heavy usage in my eyes.

I do not have Siri enabled and use my 4S the same amount as my 3GS...and, I am 99.99% of the time using it on my home WIFI.

I dunno but after another few days I think I will call Apple and complain. I would say the 4S drains completely in 2 days or less. Most of the time it's sitting on my counter.

Perhaps Jobs should have "cracked" this problem before giving up the ghost.

I've had stellar battery life since upgrading. 16 hours standby and 5 hours usage and still have 25-30% left

I wish. I've been home with the flu for a week and haven't been touching my phone.

When I wake up and take it off the charger, 100%. When I got to bed it's close to 20%. At most, it's rang and taken a voice voice mails or received a few texts. Prior to IOS 5, it would have been at like 97% if I didn't use it all day.

----
To people blaming iCloud... only if you had automatic downloads enabled and were having one hell of a shopping spree on a computer somewhere. When you upgraded to IOS, your devices had to sync and back up, so you didn't start off fragmented.

The over night back up ONLY occurs if the phone is connected to a power charger. So iCloud really shouldn't be running at all unless you manually enabled it, or bought something on a mac, pc, or other IOS device and its being pushed down.

Perhaps Jobs should have "cracked" this problem before giving up the ghost.

That was in terrible taste.

And Steve Jobs was also the man that told tens of millions of people they were holding their phones wrong, and threw a press conference to do so.

RIP Steve. You were brilliant, but the "you're holding your phone wrong," and "people don't read," will be my favorite of you less brilliant moments. And everyones allowed a few of those.

I've been having problems with Exchange

I connect to two Exchange Servers for work and if I have these enabled, my battery life seems to go down drastically. Additionally, if I have either of these enabled, Mail just sits with a downloading message and never completes the task. It worked OK on my previous iPhone (3G) and seemed to work for a while on the 4S, too. Now everything's gone pear-shaped.
