Google Now

So my watch will be able to tell me what song is on the radio in the future?

Google does this since I can remember. They developed their own way and it works very well. "ok google, what song is this?" 3 seconds is enough.

It doesn't get any easier than that.

Apple has Siri and iTunes. Why do they need Shazan for, exactly?

Siri is horrible to use for Music if your phone is set to spanish or german because it simply doesnt understand english artists or song titles which makes it utterly useless. "Play a song by Imagine Dragons" becomes "sorry i could not find music by Merchant Schreckens"

Google is better in that area and no wonder Apple relies on a "3rd party" to get it "right"

Google could be licensing Shazaam or another provider for their service. We don't know. But it works well.

I actually wonder why Apple has not yet implemented the feature. It seems like a good way to sell music through itunes.

A nice feature to be sure, but I'm not sure its really a killer feature. My wife has Shazam on her phone, I do not, and I've not really missed it

Probably crappy Android allows a faster way for getting available things I need to reach fast.
Is there really any need for that?

yes it is, after 80 replies to this topic I've seen:

-only a few argued that this function is already available with other operating systems
-having seen all these users missing a tag because through their iPhones it is too elaborate to get through
-most of replies praising how "amazing it would be a Siri integration"
I say probably "crappy" Android isn't that bad.
I am sure that 80% of posters here don't know really nothing about other mobile OS, just repeatin' something heard or read on various places all over the web.
P.S. Android, not Samsung Touchwiz or other "crap" ;)

The point I was trying to get at is why your classing Android as crappy? Unless im missing the sarcasm.

I sometimes feel like the downfall of shazam is that it's not available for content playing on the iPhone already, such as background music in a youtube video or in a movie playing on the video player.

I don't see shazam as it works now being integrated as anything more than pointless for apple to contemplate.

If however they are using it in exciting ways around the system to identify automatically any content that is playing internal or external and integrate it tightly with siri and search etc. I get the feeling this would be a great addition but shazam still need to scrub more music it usually fails at anything other than top 100 chart crap.

I’d rather see more APIs that allow apps to finally integrate with Siri and other apps. To me it sounds ridiculous that Apple is once again cherry-picking a service for some enhanced integration, while setting competitors aside. It’s the same thing with social networks, where I can use Twitter or Facebook, but not Google+ or any other social network. The OS should become more flexible.

This. I'd rather Apple not bloat iOS as Microsoft did Windows in the past. Not only for our sake but too for the 3rd party ecosystem sake.

That being said, I'm sure it's a real challenge to decide when either to integrate something (perhaps especially if other OS has it built in) or leave it in the 3rd party competitive arena.

"Crappy Android" is like a music score around here. I feel it's abused as term.

Sorry, I really wish my english was better. It was meant as sarcasm, but I have to learn a lot before trying some jokes. My fault.

Windows Phone also JUST got a system wide rotation lock and separate volume for media and ringer....

Edit: and apparently thats just a developer preview not a consumer release.

- The rotation lock was part of 8.0 Update 3, not with 8.1
- The developer preview is the full "Gold Master" release, shipped to developers a month before it's out for consumers (Starting in May 2014 with the 930)

It's a younger OS than iOS, so obliviously some features would come after iOS, but it's still a much better mobile OS... But if bashing it is your thing, have fun :)

Not bashing. I tried the HTC 8X and there were too many "features" like rotation lock missing.

If they are working on that with them, it wouldn't surprise me at all if they do buy them at some point.

I'd imagine there is no need to buy them, going on past designs, they will create an api for music identification that Shazam (or even SoundHound) will work to. Then Apple can easily choose which provider will provide the music identification feature, initially Shazam, or allow you to choose which one you want to use for example if you find one is more accurate than the other.

Darn. I really wish they would concentrate on fixing iTunes Match first, before introducing another broken song recognition feature.

What problems do you have with iTunes Match? I'm quite happy with it - it even matched songs that I recorded from LPs.

Shazam is one of my most used apps on my iPhone. So iOS integration would be awesome where I don't have to:
1) Slide to unlock the phone,
2) type in my passcode,
3) click the home button to get to my home screen if I'm not already there,
4) locate the Shazam app on my home screen,
5) tap the app to open it,
6) tap the Shazam button in the app to find out what a song is.

And while sometimes, the song is already done by that point
Just in case you didn't know, you can open Shazam this way.

1) Hold down home button and say "Open Shazam"
2) Enter Passcode
3) Tap Shazam button

Shazam was one of the very first apps I downloaded for my first iPhone, the 3G. At the time, it was pretty amazing showing what smartphones were capable of doing with good apps. Been hooked on the App Store ever since. The cool thing about Shazam is 6 years later, I still find it useful. I don't use it much but when needed, it always does the job and still brings a smile to my face just like those early days.

A lot of people don't realize that Shazam was offered on dumbphones as well, from carrier app stores that predate the iPhone.

Verizon's version was extremely popular. Over 10 million of their dumbphone users downloaded their VCast version of Shazam, in less time than the same number of downloads occurred with the iPhone version.

Meh... How is this dramatically better than regular shazaam? Siri integration?

Well, besides making sure that the app is always there and ready to help us buy more music from iTunes...

Apple has been filing patents about selling ads based on user moods and environments.

It would not be surprising if they filed for a patent where a device listened to the music around you, and based on that, offered up different services / profiles / ads / etc.

Shhh... Android already read this and is working on implementing the same song identification in their next upcoming KitKat update lol :p

That could very well be. My only thought is that there would need to be some way for Shazam to be compensated for using their services since having the capabilities built into the OS would bypass their ad revenue stream. And with as much money as they have and their past acquisitions, Apple may choose to simply buy them and bring the technology in-house at some point.

Nope, this is the only feature.

/sarcasm...

didn't think I would have to add that.

----------

You and me both... This feature while a great addition, is already available on both Android and WP7/WP8. I hope this won't be another catch up year where they announce things as 'revolutionary' even though other platforms have had them for quite some time already. ;-(

1.) Larger phone - Check
2.) Better maps - Check
3.) Apps that can actually blood talk to each other (rumored but I hope it's a check).
4.) Offline Siri/voice recognition/dictation - Check
5.) Song recognition built in - Check
6.) Heatlhbook - Check

All above are so far at least rumored in some way and all have already been on both competitors platforms in some form or another for a while... I'm hoping Apple will surprise us all and have something totally unique and thought through. No on expected the look and feel of iOS 7 as they kept it super secret and I hope that is what's going on here... The leaked stuff is just a little taste but they have something completely surprising for us.

That what I am expecting. Should be a fun release this year.
