Forget about the Watch Edition. It is a social experiment. If you can afford $10,000, you can afford another $1,000 etc. The Watch Edition may or may not sell well (in relative terms), but I highly doubt Apple is banking on it selling well to make money on the overall Watch line.

The aluminum and stainless steel watches will be what make or break this new product. And the pricing for AppleCare+ is not unreasonable for those.

I will admit.

Due to the pricing of the Edition model, which is higher than I thought it would be.

I expected, like you do with other luxury priced items, that part of this price you are paying (which we all know is totally unrelated to the material value of the item)

Apple are making, what......... $7000 minimum clear profit on every Edition Watch.

Given this, as I said, one might expect that such owners who pay this, got extra, in other ways. Benefiting from free Apple Care. Perhaps a free upgrade to the next model (that could still happen I guess)

It's quite amusing for Apple to charge such a premium on the product and they screw more out on top for AppleCare.

Must admit, If I was to pay that for the watch... I'm not getting the feeling in my soul of Apple are really looking after me well.

I'd be more concerned about losing it than damaging it. I've lost plenty of watches, but I can't remember ever "damaging" a watch.

I'm thinking more accidental water damage. You know getting all hot and bothered and jump in the shower with the person of your choice and forget you have your gazillion $$ watch on.

Damn! I didn't expect the edition pricing to be that much.

Why?

$349 for AppleCare is 17.5% of the price on a $2000 MacBook Pro.

$249 for AppleCare is 27.7% of the price on a $899 MacBook Air.

$999 is only 10% of the price on a $10,000 Apple Watch.

So almost 1/2 the price you pay for AppleCare on other products.

Since when did Apple use the term 'iReserve'??

I'm calling fake on the screenshot.

I thought it was going to be free for them. It is the least apple can do!

AppleCare+ should be free for everyone for every device standard. That's how you give back to your customers for making you worth 760 Billion Dollars.

Accidental damage coverage for a watch sounds like a great idea for the consumer. You will damage a watch.

Yes, but the reality is that it's not worth getting the "care." For example, with the iphone 6, to replace the screen (#1 Accidental Damage), to costs $105. With Apple Care it would cost $79. Total savings - $26. Do it twice and your savings goes up to $52. And the Apple Care costs more than the $52.

And for $999, they would have to come to my house to pick up the watch and clean the house while they are there. Otherwise this is just silly money. Well I guess spending $17,000 on a watch is also silly, so nevermind......

That's not how the high end luxury market works.

Basically you screw someone over MASSIVELY for the price of the product.
A thousand times more than the item is really worth.

THEN you look after them is a BIG way after for the high end luxury customer service side of things, as that's what they expect given that they understand it's part of the deal of buying that model of anything in the 1st place.

You buy low end and you pay for the nose for everything, every service, every upgrade.

You buy high end, and you benefit with free things being looked after superbly.

Can you scrape the gold off the Edition watch then get a replacement under warranty? :D

I don't know, Maserati service isn't very good.

You have a good point here. If I am going to pay $10,000 to $17000 for a watch, at lease give me 3 years warranty. I mean that would be the moral thing to do. I honestly thought people buying the Eidtion wouldn't have to buy Apple care+. Guess I was beside myself thinking like that.

Maxed out Mac Pro is over $10,000 but Applecare is only $249 for that. Can the gold in the Edition actually be damaged or is it expensive to "fix"? Otherwise, I do not understand the Applecare pricing.

Perhaps the Applecare for the Edition is also insurance against loss? If I purchase an iPhone through Verizon I have the option of adding replacement insurance for loss or theft - that could be the difference in pricing here.

Or... it is an all-inclusive fee -- no charges for accidental damage replacements. Pay the $999 and shatter your face as much as you please.

how'd you like to be a current apple repair employee and go from being liable for damages to iPads to liable for apple watch gold editions?

Doesn't AppleCare+ come with accidental damage coverage? That might mean replacing the gold case.

If it's like their other plans, accidental damage does not include cosmetic damage (dents, scratches, etc..). The damage has to hinder the usage of the device to qualify. You'd have to mess the watch up pretty bad to make it unusable I would think.

But you're forgetting - the Apple Watch Edition isn't actually worth $17,000. Its intrinsic value is more like that of a 15" MacBook Pro.

But this makes one wonder - how many people will actually buy one? Only the frivolous, it appears. Or perhaps those who believe it will be a total flop, buying it for an investment. But I've heard of no limits on the production quantities, and I suspect Apple's already manufactured too many of them to make them rare.

Sure, but the gold in the watch is surely worth at least the value of the MBP, if not more. The difference is that an unscrupulous employee could just pocket this thing versus a macbook.

I agree on the purchasing part - Apple has done nothing to quell the longevity fears of Apple Watch. How long will they support this model with battery replacements? In 5 years would you be able to replace the battery? Will the software still work and be compatible with the latest iOS version? That is the main issue the Edition has. If someone buys a $10k mechanical watch they can be sure it will be working for the next 50 years. With Apple Watch we aren't even guaranteed more than two.

Another random thought I just had that is unanswered - does Apple Watch show up in find my iPhone? It has wifi and a speaker...
