Generally speaking, I think _ALL_ extended warranty coverage plans are a waste of money. Mostly, all companies and insurers know that they will take in more than they will ever pay out on these policies. If you never buy any extended warranty you'll make out better because what you pay out will be less than what you would have paid for various insurance policies along the way.

Having said that, the AL vs SS costs seem backward to me. I'd think that the SS would be more rugged and/or typically used in a less risky way than the 'Sport' model. That they charge more for the SS coverage seems to imply to me that these costs are arbitrary and mostly based on the potential buyer's ability to pay. _OR_, the more expensive watches are subsidizing the Apple Care for the Sport variety.

Either way, I am a day 0 buyer and won't be throwing Applecare on top of the pile.

Applecare extended warranties are one of the exceptions. They really do provide great service to people with an Applecare plan.

Let's not get carried away. Apple is certainly not struggling in the US. It is a simple matter that borrowing money is less costly than the tax implications of accessing their cash/assets.

It is somewhat similar to a person with hundreds of thousands of dollars in a 401k still taking out a loan to get a new car. The person has the assets, it is just better served by "buying cheaper money" via a loan.

Never said it was struggling. And I'm aware of borrowing is cheaper thing. I do it all the time.

I borrowed money for my house because I earn a higher rate in my investment accounts. I net about 1.8-2.3% annually. Just about covers inflation increases too. Plus I get to write off mortgage interest on my taxes which helps me even more.

The coverage for these watches should be standard. A watch is not a computer or phone - it's an entirely different product that I think should have an entirely different protection plan.

I thought it was going to be free for them. It is the least apple can do!

In my experience people don't value or appreciate something that is given to them. Not in cases, such as this. Buy having to pay something, they will be glad to have the insurance, but will still be mindful of their watches, as they are invested in them.

AppleCare+ doesn't cover loss or theft of device for "commoners'" devices, but I just want to think there is something extra (besides the duration) for the price of Edition coverage.

If Apple doesn't want to replace your $349 watch if you pay $59 for AppleCare, I wouldn't think they would replace your $13,000 watch if you pay $999 for AppleCare. That's what insurance companies are therefore, so just make sure to tell your PA to inform the insurance company.

If it's like their other plans, accidental damage does not include cosmetic damage (dents, scratches, etc..). The damage has to hinder the usage of the device to qualify. You'd have to mess the watch up pretty bad to make it unusable I would think.

Not at all. The main usage of the Apple Edition Watch is to impress others, so dents and scratches make it unusable for its intended purpose. :D

wow, that's a lot of money for Applecare on the gold version.
Man, I am so curious to see how people will react to the :apple:Watch.
I am holding on it until it is waterproof.

If you take high end jewelry into a store for repair, they'll polish it for you, too. And repair can include cosmetic damage - this is jewelry after all! And generally they can get all of the scratches out. If I bought a $17,000 watch, I'd expect it to come back polished from Apple, too.

Agreed. Hopefully they've changed the policy for the watch.

$999 for AppleCare+ Never thought I'd ever see that. But it's in line with how much the Edition costs. If you can afford $10,000 to $17,000 then chances are you can afford $11,000 to $18,000.

Well, at least we now know Apple's Margin on the Edition Apple Watch. $999 replacement price. ;)

I really doubt that's the replacement price. These AppleCare prices are probably just like any other insurance policy. A percentage based on the replacement cost. They are hoping and banking on most never using the coverage. Not a whole lot different than the current coverage I have on my watch collection, or a policy on your auto. I pay $10 a year per $1000 of replacement cost, per watch. The $500 I pay per year darn sure isn't the replacement cost of my watches. And that policy protects against any type of loss, and certain types of damage. Apple's policy has much more coverage for damage, so I'd expect the cost to be even more than what I currently pay, which it is.

Will the Watch warranty in Australia be 2 years making Apple Care+ be mostly redundant?

Yes, I agree. It was an attempt at Humor. :apple:

The warranty will basically be 2 years in Australia. However, it does not mean that AppleCare+ is redundant. AppleCare+ will cover accidental damage (say if you fall into a swimming pool with you AppleWatch or smash your AppleWatch whilst playing sport etc). Your normal statutory warranty does not cover that. The statutory warranty will cover manufacturers defects (not accidental damage).

Hang on a minute, Apple is charging $1000 for just the applecare for the gold watch? Are they on crack?

Sorry, we all love new gadgets, but this really screams "hold off for v2, or perhaps v3...." more and more each day. Again, not saying it will never become a good value, but right now....this is a bit of a vanity/luxury item.

I do want to kindly thank those early adopters for taking this project on, my hat is off to you folks. Best of luck.

Screen Replacement Cost?

I'm most curious if Apple will offer screen replacement as it does now for iPhone. I'd like to get the Sport but only turn off is the ion-x screen vs sapphire.

But If I was assured a screen replacement was under $79 (As it is with applecare+ with iPhone6)....well that changes things.

I hope they do offer screen replacements!
