And I thank all of you who intentionally damage your iPhone if you feel like swapping it out and think nothing of it. Good job people.

This. 100 times, this.

Stop taking your phones back for stupid reasons, or worse, breaking them because of some stupid little thing. THAT is what costs Apple money, and THAT is why the prices have gone up.

It really is a non-issue, because I am just going to cancel my AppleCare+, but I think there's thousands, if not millions of people who blindly bought AppleCare+ with their new iPhone in the hurry to buy it at exactly 12:01AM (a hysteria brought upon by Apple) who certainly didn't have time to read over the agreements one assumes remain the same. When something happens to the iPhone and people start to waddle in to the Apple Store expecting to pay $50, they're in for a real shock. And I think that's unfair.

Especially when there's such awesome insurance options out there (like Worth Ave Group) which cost less then AppleCare, have $50 deductibles, and most importantly, include theft. Just my opinion... nothing more.

I just use the extended warranty protection offered by my credit card. It automatically doubles the manufacturer's default warranty. In the case of an iPhone, Apple's default warranty covers it (free) for the 1st year, then my credit card coverage covers it for the 2nd year. I recently had my 4S replaced OOW by Apple. My credit card company reimbursed me for the replacement fee. No need to spend any extra money at all on AppleCare+, Square Trade, etc.

Of course, this wouldn't cover theft, but chances are my homeowner's insurance might cover that (haven't checked). Also I think the chances of theft are so low for me that I would rather take the risk (aka self-insure) for that possibility.

As previously mentioned, not Apple's problem. Anyone who signs a contract assuming what it says is in for a nasty surprise and they only get bigger. Phone -> Car -> House -> Satan (or was that one already covered by #1). :D

With that said, I expect prices to go up but what's disconcerting is that the iPhone 5S didn't perform as well as the iPhone 5 in a break test.

It is a ripoff.

Applecare+ is $99. One incident is $79. You'll shell out $178 to fix a broken screen. Two incidents totals $257.

The most expensive damage (unless you TOTAL the device and it's soaked and screen is crushed, and absolutely must be replaced) is usually the screen which costs $149 to fix. So you'd have to destroy your screen twice for a total of $298 without Applecare+ to break even.

Wow, that's absolutely ridiculous.

Before $199 was the standard replacment fee for out of warranty service. Than they raised it to $229.

Now it's $269?

I know Apple's strategy. They are trying to promote repairs in store and not replace the phone all together. Repairs are much more profitable than replacements for Apple.

What is messed up is the notion that them only charging $269 is somehow highway robbery when they could just tell you to buy a whole new device at the unsubsidized price.

The web site was updated with the new price after the iPhone 5 announcement on the 10th. Everyone had well over a week to read the terms and make their decision. This wasn't something nobody noticed. There were many threads about it on the 10th.

Yep. In for a real $29 "shock" because I didn't take the time to read what I signed...

Watch the SouthPark episode HumancentiPad and count your blessings.

READ. Or don't. But if you don't, don't cry about not doing it AFTER you agree to it...

Another poster mentioned that replacement screens aren't available for the 5s yet from Apple. So be prepared to pay the full price ($269) for a replacement until they are.

Apple is a business. They are here to make money not friends. For those who forgot, please remember.

Sheesh that's ridiculous ... aren't they the same as the 5, technically? I guess the 5S has a different chassis surrounding the new home button, but comparing my 5S and 5, they look the same.

Totally without anyone noticing, AppleCare+, a default purchase by so many of us when purchasing a new iPhone, now charges $79.99 PER INCIDENT for accidental damage repair, up from the $49.99 they charged before. Not only that, but they've reduced the number of incidents per year from 3 to 2. I always thought AppleCare+ was a ripoff, especially with places like SquareTrade and WorthAve Group offering tremendously superior insurance (Worth Group offering THEFT protection as well with a $50 deductible), but many people I know like it due to the convenience of going into the Apple Store and getting a replacement on the spot.

I just find it super sneaky that they changed the terms of AppleCare+ for iPhone so drastically without anyone noticing. I am totally shocked.

It is two not three and thye likely had to raise th price because OCD people are wearing it out!

They also changed the OOW price from $229 -> $269 for the iPhone 5/5C/5S. It happened the day of the iPhone 5C/5S announcement.

So even if I have a 64gb ATT iphone 5S, I only pay $269 if I damage the phone and need an out of warranty replacement?

Get Square Trade

Get Square Trade. They have a $30 off deal going on now - so I got it (with the coupon - $89 + tax so $5 less than Apple AND 4 incidents (drops, spills, out of warranty failures etc.)).

THIS +1

We dunked 2 iphones in the ocean (long story) took them to the Apple store while still on vacation and got one OOW replacement for the $229 and one replaced for the $50 (it had Applecare). I considered both of those a very good deal, cause we paid full price for the phones, so getting a new phone for $229 when I originally paid $749 ain't too shabby.

I don't think I could do that with any other brand phone. One huge advantage for Apple.

Ripoff? Or you're paying for an extra year of covered issues such as non-functioning speakers, etc. People always forget that AppleCare+ isn't just for repairing or replacing your damaged goods.

New FaceTime camera as well. The button, receiver, and camera are all integrated with the LCD/glass.

Do you gef a brand new phone or refurb. I thought it was refurb. Not that they any better or worse

I was told by a Genius at the Apple Store @ The Grove in LA that it's still $49 for screen replacements and they're now doing them in house while you wait. $79 now applies for the full replacement.

While I haven't read this anywhere else, he sounded pretty ready for my question when I addressed him about the increased price. He was even telling me about the tool they're able to use to properly calibrate the screen as if it were from the factory.

Honestly, I view it as a premium case option. For $99, you can walk around and not bulk up your phone in an ugly case, and then if anything happens, you're not out a ridiculous amount to get it replaced, you end up with a scratch free replacement phone with a brand new battery for $79.

I cracked my 4S about a month ago and had one incident left on my AC+, ended up with a brand new 4S 64GB to sell this month.

Worth it.
