I just use the extended warranty protection offered by my credit card. It automatically doubles the manufacturer's default warranty. In the case of an iPhone, Apple's default warranty covers it (free) for the 1st year, then my credit card coverage covers it for the 2nd year. I recently had my 4S replaced OOW by Apple. My credit card company reimbursed me for the replacement fee. No need to spend any extra money at all on AppleCare+, Square Trade, etc.

Of course, this wouldn't cover theft, but chances are my homeowner's insurance might cover that (haven't checked). Also I think the chances of theft are so low for me that I would rather take the risk (aka self-insure) for that possibility.
This wouldn't cover accidental damage, either (since Apple's default warrant doesn't).

Get Square Trade. They have a $30 off deal going on now - so I got it (with the coupon - $89 + tax so $5 less than Apple AND 4 incidents (drops, spills, out of warranty failures etc.)).

FWIW, it's "up to 4 incidents". When you buy a Square Trade warranty, the value of your warranty is equal to the full price of the iPhone (i.e. $649/$749/$849).

The amount of repair you need is deducted from the value of your warranty.

So if you have a 16GB iPhone, your Square Trade warranty value is $649, which only gives you enough for two of the $269 replacement phones from Apple. However, if you have a 64GB iPhone, the Square Trade warranty value is $849, and you'd be able to get three $269 replacements.

It is two not three and thye likely had to raise th price because OCD people are wearing it out!

Yep all those with magnifying glasses opening multiple boxes and whining about micro dings are causing the price to increase. Or their home button clicks too loud and want a replacement. Or those that shake their phone and hear a little rattle and want a replacement. Or their screen looks slightly yellow, or slightly blue and want a replacement. I just wish Apple would have someone who would slap them across the head a few times and say there's your replacement buddy.

Ripoff? Or you're paying for an extra year of covered issues such as non-functioning speakers, etc. People always forget that AppleCare+ isn't just for repairing or replacing your damaged goods.

New FaceTime camera as well. The button, receiver, and camera are all integrated with the LCD/glass.

Hmm, that's true. I don't keep my phones for more than a year though, but this could be valuable to the average user.

And I understand that replacement screens are similar but not identical, just seems poorly planned to not have any ready for warranty purposes at launch.

I have AC+ on my iPhone 5, but have never gone to the Genius Bar yet to get it replaced. It is really dinged up bad (one drop was on a concrete sidewalk while jogging and is dented gouged pretty bad). Will they replace it for that (for my $50 deductible of course)? The battery sucks on it too compared to my wife's iPhone 5.

I used to strictly get Best Buys insurance because of their unlimited claims at NO deductible but as an employee I was turned off by the fact that they charge 200 for the plan and 150 a claim with 3 claims In two years. THAT is a ripoff

I looked all over for insurance and compared left and right, AppleCare is the most reasonable. Assurion charges 150-225 per claim and one lost/stolen claim. I just didn't feel like paying monthly and then paying a heavy deductible.

AppleCare is very reasonable I think. I'm glad I bought it.

Personally I really want Asurion in case I lose my phone. I'm not prepared to pay the $850 replacement cost for the 64 GB phone. I'd rather not use another upgrade either (and > $400).
The $200 deductible sounds bad, but if I got AppleCare+ and replaced it once that would cost me $180 anyway. In this case it just made sense to stay with Asurion. Previous phones I have bought I have used both services.

I took my broken GS4 into the Samsung Store at the local mall and spoke to the smart guy, at the smart guy table.

Even though I purchased GalaxyCare+, the replacement cost was MSRP!!!

DARN YOU SAMSUNG!!!

But if someone pays for applecare+ so they can have the phone replaced, all they are really doing is taking advantage of what they paid for. Are you saying people should pay for applecare+ and then not use it? What's the point of that?

Yes.
I just purchased squaretrade for the first time. Normally I get AppleCare+ but the $30 jump in deductible this year made me change my mind. Hopefully I don't have to find out which is better.

Only thing that is a plus with apple care is that you get a replacement instantly at the apple store as with Squaretrade you have to send it in, risk you device getting lost, and not having a device for 2-4 days.

Not true. I can pay for an out of warranty replacement at the Genius Bar and squaretrade will reimburse me. So I get a phone the same day and don't care if it takes a couple days to put the money back on the credit card.

Ohh that's cool. Does square trade rates go up then or did you pay the one time fee of $100?

They were asking $124 for the squaretrade warranty online. I kept seeing coupon codes but I was always too late to use them so I call squaretrade up and asked for a coupon code. They gave me one and I ended up paying $94 and will have a $50 deductible.

Does anyone know if it's possible/easy to transfer the Square Trade warranty to the new owner if you sell your iPhone?

It is not technically for just cosmetic damages, but they will usually replace it.
