Contact the store or contact Apple support and complain. Show them the link to their own website. Having your receipt would help. It's always been $299 to replace an out of warranty iPad. The iPhone has a fixed price as well.

well, i just spoke with apple care for about an hour, spoke to two people (one a supervisor) and both said that was the correct price for the model iPad i had and couldn't do anything about a refund or credit or anything.

Well, that's weird. Apple's website says $299 to replace any out-of-warranty iPad 3. Yet your local store is saying $400. I'd call Apple customer service and have them straighten out the store, which is clearly wrong.

Looking at the numbers.

$299 for out-of-warranty repair.
$148 for repair under AppleCare+ ($99 initial + $49).

$151 difference.

So, what's that extra $151 (without AppleCare+) worth as risk for additional cost to replace in case of accident? Basically, you pay $148 upfront so you don't have to pay $151 more if an accident... and that's good only for the first 2 years.

that was who i called. They said prices dropped when the iPad 3 came out, but that at the time the 64gb model was $419 to repair. Tried to see if they could at least price match since it was only 6 weeks prior to the iPad 3 release and they said no.

I usually never purchase the extended warranties but I did for the new iPad. I had my original iPad dor 2 years and I used it all the time. Came close to dropping it a couple of times and my granddaughter actually did drop it while in the case and split the plastic where the antenna was. I put some super glue on it and it continued to work just fine until I traded it in. Could have been a lot worse.

For my new iPad I have a very slim case with minimal protection - purchased mainly for the stand function. I actually just purchased the AC+ this past weekend after reading about some of the accidental drops and shattered screens.

I said no. Need to buy a case anyway. You can get a otterbox from amazon from $50 to $60 to protect the investment.

Did you point them to their own web page which shows $299? It's the same "1 price" for the iPhone. I would take it further up the ladder and complain. Tell them to fix their website if it is wrong. I would go back to the store with a website printout.

That's incredible. I believe you. It's incredible Apple would do that... change their repair cost schedule in so short a time.

Out of curiosity, buying with Amex provides accidental coverage? That's pretty sweet.

I purchased mine with a Visa that provides an additional year warranty coverage. Wonder how they handle it versus Amex.

Visa is good (Signature cards), but only for defects or failures and doesn't cover accidents for that additional year. But Visa I think is like Amex with 90 day purchase protection (includes accidents).

Yeah that sucks. It used to be tiered back then before iPad 3 came out.

I actually just used my first AppleCare event this week and guess what...

It was for a minor, minor, minor, blemish. But; after the geniuses got through busting my balls about how it didn't warrant a warranty exchange I decided to give them a big F* You and use my AppleCare to get what I wanted.

How, where did the blemish come from!? Got Damn B* ***** Smart Covers scratched my PERECT launch day iPad.

So I get the replacement and go to best buy to purchase new cover and notice that the replacement has the pink hue.

What do I do!? Go right back and get a PERFECT replacement screaming F* the geniuses who would just send me off with a BS replacement.

All this wouldn't have been possible without AppleCare. So in short, yes it's worth it!!!

Congrats on being "that" customer. If you've ever worked retail you'll know what I mean, stay classy.

Customer service is a two way street, if you come in acting all entitled and combative as you came across here you will 9/10 receive bad customer service.

You will get much further being friendly and professional than you ever will being a dick, that goes for most anything. I suppose that's common sense though.

The next time you want to be a dick to a retail employee ask yourself what you would do if you were in their shoes. Chances are you wouldn't want to deal with some self entitled running at the mouth kid either.

That said Applecare is a personal choice, I really don't think there is a right or wrong thing to do. If you think its worth it to you then that's all that matters. Piece of mind costs money for anything, whether it be time or in this case money for a policy.

You seriously paid fifty dollars to get rid of a blemish?

I am a little confused by your susequent posts. You called Apple and pointed them to their own website that shows the costs and they still insisted that $410 was the right price?

If true, this is quite troubling.

I would get the corporate office number and call for assistance. If $299 is not correct, then a whole heck of a lot of people have made coverage decisions based upon the number shown at their site.

Please post here again with your progress. I am tempted to also call for a clarification.

So I am positive you're the one who lost here:

1. You used up a free replacement
2. You paid $50 for minor minor minor scratches
3. You did not inspect the unit before you left but instead, inspected it a Best Buy?
4. You had to drive back to the store and exchange again

Did you at least try another store?
Did you call Apple direct?
DId you have nothing better to do?

Apparently Apple had a different repair price schedule for iPad 2 than it now has for iPad 3. It was a tiered scale depending on the model for 2, whereas now it's the same $299 for all models of the 3. This I didn't originally understand.

Well, contrary to the other poster who responded to me:

1. I'm not a kid, I'm fully grown with a family and so on.
2. I was professional as I HAVE worked retail and currently am in a customer facing job role.
3. I DIDN'T CAUSE THE PROBLEM, their stupid smart cover did... so how is that my fault!?

For me, I hate scratches, ESPECIALLY, if I didn't cause them. So yes, for me to ENJOY my product I took advantage of a service that I paid for.

Kudos to those, who don't readily take the "geniuses" word as gospel.

I mean I like Apple as much or more as the next man but simply cause you wear a blue shirt with an apple on it, doesn't make you right...

NAH MEAN!?!??!!?

I VERY MUCH had something better to do, however I wasn't going to tolerate my iPad being no good (TO ME) over something I didn't do.

I did inspect the unit in the store (external, as I was ready to leave) but after powering it up and going through setup it was THEN I noticed it.

I learned though, as when I went back for the second, I restored it on the SPOT and thus concluded I had been compensated like for like...

That's all!!! This wasn't about me being a jerk (quite the contrary), or getting over, or abusing Apples policies.

This was about Apple not standing behind their peripherial and then trying to make me feel less than adequate for calling them out on their design flaw on the smart cover.

Geesh, Apple is the ish BUT that doesn't mean they're always right, right!?

I bought it this time - did not with original iPad or ipad 2. Did it for several reasons:

A). My 3rd gen. iPad runs much warmer and I have a back cover on it so this means I'm covered if battery goes out on me > 1 year out.

B) new AppleCare Plus offers more benefits

C) this covers me for $49 if one of my kids drops it and cracks the screen.

I think today is the last day you can buy it.

I think i'll not buy it. 299 isn't bad considering a repair if 150 WITH apple care (apple care 99+50 repair).

I can afford to spend 300 if I somehow break it, but i might not need to spend a dime. With apple care i'm out 100 no matter what.
