Out of curiosity, buying with Amex provides accidental coverage? That's pretty sweet.

I purchased mine with a Visa that provides an additional year warranty coverage. Wonder how they handle it versus Amex.[/QUOTE

You only get 90 days of accidental damage coverage from American Express. It's not the same as Applecare+.

Now what if you buy AppleCare+ with a Visa that provides an additional year of warranty coverage. Does visa extend the same features of the warranty for that additional year (eg accidental damage)? I know other people who have used their credit card for warranty said it is pretty painless.

As long as you've got most of the iPad left they'll replace it for you. Drop it in pool, car runs it over, some douche spills coffee on it? Whatever.

That's pretty awesome for 2 years worth of coverage.

I got it for my wife's new iPad mainly because she's not very careful with gadgets in general and we have a 5 year old who's infatuated with her iPad so I'm predicting a better than average chance that she'd make use of the accidental coverage, which is the only reason I got AC+ (my MasterCard provides an additional year of warranty but not accidental coverage).

That's a good question. If so, I hope the CC company allows for extended AC+ coverage when the AC+ was purchased at a later date after iPad purchase (as in my case). I'll call VISA tomorrow.

Just added it Friday, a few days shy of the 30 days. I debated it for a while and finally decided it was worth the peace of mind, since I'll keep mine for at least two years, and you never know what can happen during that time.

I got a rider on my homeowners that covers all computers--it includes iPad (but not a smartphone). It is much cheaper than the Applecare+.

How long has Applecare+ been around for? It's not available in Australia - just the normal apple care (no accident coverage). Seems like a pretty good thing though - I always get applecare - but applecare with accident coverage would be even better!

Credit card coverage is good. So is Square Trade. But with Applecare + I can exchange a totalled iPad in minutes in my local store. With a credit card, I have to get estimate for repair, file a claim, etc. I'll pay (and I did) for this benefit.

Didn't get Applecare+, since I paid with my American Express. The manuf warranty gets extended for an extra year, if anything happens (even accidental damage, but not theft) - they will pay the original price back or the cost to replace the iPad. Plus myself and my wife keep our iDevices in brand new shape

AC+ was just initiated by Apple here in the states in the last few months. I think Apple is experimenting with this concept in adding accident coverage, before they expand it internationally. There's a lot of varied opinions about it, as seen by this poll and posts here. It's not universally welcomed by many.

Good point.

I voted yes for a few reasons. The first is I always buy applecare for my products. You never know when something is going to go wrong. I would rather spend a little extra up front and protect my investment, after all I am in general spending several hundred to several thousand dollars on a product, I want the piece of mind knowing that if there is a problem I am covered. I mean after all whats another $99 (I believe thats what is costs for the iPad but I could be wrong, I am still rocking my iPad 1 so its been a while lol) to protect a product your spending at least $499 on? Applecare is awesome and I recommend you always protect your investment.

Accidental damage coverage ends after 90 days, even with a Platinum AmEx. The AmEx replicates (not completely) Applecare, not Applecare+.

If a friend, spouse, or child trashes your precious AppleCare+ just may save a friendship. ;)

They extend the original manufacturer's warranty. That's the warranty associated with the purchase. They don't extend extended warranties.

+1

I asked this question a while ago to my MasterCard's Extended Warranty provider (regarding a TV purchase) and was told the same thing; They don't extent "extended warranties", they just extend the basic manufacturers' warranty and they base that on what's printed in the warranty information section of the product user guide or manual (which is why in most cases they also ask for a copy of that guide when filing a claim).

Haha funny how we have similar names and are both in the Chicago area. Something in the water, I guess.

Id keep the apple care. You already paid for it so obviously you can afford it, and you no longer have to worry about it for 2 years. You also won't miss the $100 that went into it already.

A $50 deductible and same day replacement at an Apple store up to 2 years from now if you drop it or something goes wrong will be a lot easier to swallow than $550-$800 (or more depending on your model) or hours and days spent on ordering replacement parts, waiting for shipping, reading DIY guides, etc.

Even if you don't use it for 2 years at least you won't be panicked about taking your iPad on vacations, to coffee shops, etc. where you may have an accident cause you'll know a replacement is just $50 away should something bad happen.

That frees your mind up and lets you enjoy it the way it was meant and not keep it locked up in your room because you're afraid it will break.

$50 only applies to accidental damage. You make it seem like its always charged.

As long as its not considered a claim. There can be issues if its considered a claim.

Interesting and very important point.

So this Applecare+ decision got me thinking - technically a person with Applecare could "purposely" damage their iPad right before the coverage is up and get the new model and additional year of support then they would have had for $50? I thought this was the reason Apple never offered this with iPhone and iPads, because the assumption is there will be a new model released every year - the iPad 3 might not even be available in 2 years when the Applecare coverage would be ending.

It's not a trade-up plan. Your broken device is replaced with a fully-functioning device (either refurbished to "new" spcs or a new item) with identical specifications. You don't get a "next-generation" replacement. And the warranty is only valid for the initial period of Applecare+ or 90 days, whichever is longer (e.g. you get a replacement device on the last day your warranty is in effect then you get 90 days more).
