It always amuses me that the US is a far more Christian country than the UK, but no one seems to be allowed to say Happy Christmas in public. In the UK this app is called 12 Days of Christmas.

Here in Ireland it is 12 Days of Gifts

Mavericks is a moderate extension of Mountain Lion, so it was in Apple's best interest to make it free. They certainly don't want to share the same fate as Microsoft in that category.. iWork/iLife is free for new product owners, not long-time owners. Everybody with some form of a software marketplace has a free app/game of the week. Finally, generally speaking, Apple drops prices on their products because they dropped their features (namely hardware). Take a look at the 13" rMBP of late. Yes, its price dropped, but so did its memory. In fact, it was halved. Don't be blinded by dollar signs and be afraid to peek behind the curtains of why Apple is so "generous." Otherwise, you're just another fanboy.

If they try giving away Michael Buble rubbish and I accidentally horde it down to the point where its taken ages to clear it off devices I will cry.

Usually some gems in there though :)

I don't understand why Apple insists on iOS 7, there is probably nothing in that app which requires iOS 7 functionality. I get that Apple wants to push everyone to iOS 7, but can't they at least make some effort to maintain some backwards compatibility where possible? This shows how much Apple thinks of customers that either cannot or do not want to upgrade their devices (iPhone 4 user here). :(

Maybe one of the apps it intends to let you download is iOS7 only. Or perhaps they want people to upgrade or get a new device. If you haven't bought a new iDevice in 3 years then are you really a customer?

I'm curious... do customers get different things or does everyone get the same stuff?

Appears that every user of a particular country's store will get the same item. But items may differ between the various country stores.

Because if they called it the 12 days of Christmas someone would probably sue.

Sure, but someone will probably sue because they didn't call it 12 Days of Christmas. :D

They could have co-named it:

8 Days of Kwanzaa plus 4 Bonus Days

Hanukkah... 21 Days Later

Orthodox Christmas: One Day Late, so what's new. (promo ends on Jan 6, Oth. Christmas is Jan 7).

However, Apple could not have named it "Festivus, Apps for the Rest of Us" since that is an anti-commericalism "holiday." Even so, I'm betting during the days of this promo there will be plenty of "airing of grievances" here on MR.

I guess that the app is iOS7 because some of the things they will give away for free might require iOS7. And besides that about 80% of all active devices on the net already have iOS7 installed. So it make sense to focus on that group.

The gift is linked to your apple-id, so no need to install it on all your devices it will be the same gift for all. And you can install it on all your devices anyway. The gift is free in the store, the app only provides the link to it. So even if you don’t have the app, you will still be able to download it for free.

The gift is different per region. So a US customer might get something different then a UK one, or a French one….

Some of the apps that are global will probably be gifted to all regions at the same time. But they also gift at least one video, song and iBook. This is to promote all their stores. If you like the book you might want to check for other books in the store….
So now you might get it. Movies, songs and books will be different per region. As most French customers might enjoy a French song a little more than an average Chinese customer…

That is also a little bit a problem for multilanguage regions like the one I live in (Belgium). My natural tongue is Dutch but here in the region Belgium we get every year some French content as well. On the other side my French speaking countrymen will not really like the Dutch content that will be presented as well.

By the way the app also called “12 days” last year and did not have any link with Christmas besides the fact that it started the day after.

It's always nice to get things for free. Happy it's coming to the US. Hat tip to crew in Cupertino.

Unrelated: Did the marketing team from UPS create the color scheme?
What can brown do for you?

Amazing that some people actually do complain about free things! I wonder how giving they are.

I tried downloading the app. Am using iOS 7.0.4. Signed in to my account, went to install, then got a window stating "Verification Required. Before you can make purchases you must tap Continue to verify your payment info."

??? I use iTunes cards and have a credit balance.

A "gift" that requires a credit card?

The icon...

... at least they could have updated the icon to the latest UX design guidance they put out themselves. It still has the border and is slightly smaller... Yes, I know, nit-picky today.

Because if they called it the 12 days of Christmas someone would probably sue.

The app did used to be called 12 days of Christmas (the app still exists in the Appstore), its been retired globally and renamed to 12 days of gifts so it can be used everywhere
