I love everyone freaking out about the issues this machine would have, it's a fail, don't buy because of the dongles, ect...

It's a artist rendering...a pretty much worthless tool for understanding a actual product. You could make a model using your own poo and have the same amount of credibility. Relax!

This is the 'we cannot live without the floppy disk' all over again. Of course you only need 1 port. You have iCloud for storing things (and also other cloud services if you want), you don't need external storage. A cable to a display? Why would you want that? Use airplay.
The only people who wouldn't want this are people working with music and video. But for those people they invented the macbook pro.

This will be a great machine which can handle the future.

^not everyone has cloud storage speed and access.Especially where i live i hardly get 1Mb download speeds

First I was a bit freaked out with this. But then I saw these photos below. Laughed.
And thought this might be far from reality.

no thanks apple!
so if i want to use a USB device, connect to HDMI, transfer SD card files, connect to thunderbolt then i will need to buy an adapter which will no doubt cost £20+ EACH.

No, the "adapters" required are passive and are simpler than a Lightning cable. They should cost very little. This final connector has to occur in order to prevent even more adapters in future.

The scope of the USB 3.1 project will save you enormous money in the long term. Think of all those wall adapters around the house for your appliances. The Type C connector is finally the single global power connector for up to 100W. It has broad support even outside of the electronics industry. There is no competition.

Within 5-10 years, it will likely be the most common power outlet in houses on walls - powering lights, fans, televisions, hi-fis, electric blankets, shavers, cordless vacuums etc...

Plus it can carry all previous data standards too!

You're in the same category as people who bought 17" MBPs: an insignificant market to Apple.

Yes, unfortunately that's the case. And those guys have the option to buy the best computers on the market: rMBP.

Since thunderbolt 3.0 is going to have the same port as this USB 3.1, it just looks like such an awesome idea. This computers is going to outsell every single ultrabook combined and some more.

I hope it starts at less than 1000$ for a nice ULV processor, 8GB of ram, 256 GB SSD.

Hey Apple. It's fine to make it thiner, but you know what? I just need a Macbook air just like the existing one with retina display.

Switching to USB type C is fine, but you better give us AT least 2 USB type C ports. Damn, I can imagine that I will first need to get one of these adapter..

And then getting one of these USB3 to Gigaport+ USB3 hub when I need to use more port at home

I disagree. For one, airplay isn't the most stable thing and I prefer the benefits of HDMI. iCloud doesn't store everything I need, not to mention you need an internet connection for it.

The problem with one port for me is hyping us all up for lightning then taking it away. If we at least had 4 type-c ports I'd be fine, but this is pushing it.

True, Wifi isn't the most stable thing as well (surely it was a lot worse the day the first macbook air came out), but you can't plug an ethernet cable in a macbook air and do you see anyone crying over that?
What can't you store in a cloud-service? And hello, it's 2015, of course you have always access to an internet connection. If not, walk to the nearest supermarket and you have one for free.

The problem is that people are not eager to switch. Why the hell would you want 4 ports on a macbook air!?

Judging from your comment, I'm gonna guess you don't realize this is MacRUMORS forum and people talk about rumors ABOUT APPLE.

don't like it? Well, you can always visit Apple.com

Well aware it's a rumors site, been here for years. If it's one thing I know for sure, "Artist Renditions" are rarely correct.

Have you ever heard of lag? Airplay is good for watching movies, not for a second display.

If a custom USB is really needed (therefore requiring an external hub/adaptor for other devices) then why not make it a thunderbolt port, (even if it's a customer thunderbolt port) it would be more versatile, and people could still connect USB 3 adaptor to it. (And add a port to both sides of the machine)

Thunderbolt 3.0 uses the USB Type C connector anyway.

According to who? I can't find any article about Thunderbolt 3 that verifies it will use the same connector as USB Type C but they all say the power carried by both is equal.

It definitely won't have 1 charging/usb port only. Apple makes iPhones that are charged via usb cable meaning I would no longer be able to charge my phone through my laptop plugged into a power supply. Hence, I would never buy the machine if that's the case. I can't see them doing that.

Because it is not a custom USB port, it is a standard. Thunderbolt is also bigger and non reversible and hardly used.

And what what kind of battery life would it have had two years ago?

Battery life wasn't the issue 2 years ago. Product differentiation was. Now that the Pros are retina, it makes sense to bump up the Air to 1080.

And no way this thing comes without a TB port.

Pretty much this.

No way will it have one port. If it did I would buy a windows PC

If it ends up being more powerful and has a better display than my Macbook Pro 2011 i would seriously consider upgrading to a Macbook Air Retina (if of course it is a real product  )

It will. Hot air will always raise to the top and so these cooling/speaker grills on the top side will indeed help to emit heat.

Good luck telling Apple to drill holes in their laptop case so that heat will naturally rise. A heat sync is much more effective.

----------

THis may come as a shock, but you don't need a fan to do air cooling (with grilles). Google this new thing called convection (or convective heat transfer).

I'm shocked! It's called using a heat sync which computer makers have been doing for 35 years.

GREAT!
Finaly... no more useful ports and a bran new USB cable that I will be able to use with... nothing yet! ;)

Aw... whatever. I will bring the charger with the laptop (which will make for the reduced thickness)

Are you kidding? I'm a native Californian, we're all beautiful and fit, but I have been known to enjoy a charcuterie plate now and then.

The nice thing about a Tesla is that you sit so low you could be shaped like a puddle and nobody would notice, and since you're next to a high intensity EMF you'll probably end up with leukemia anyway.

I'm still betting on the fire though.

better than living until 40 and dying of diabetes from obesity. you're obviously too young to have seen what leukemia does to people or you probably wouldn't joke about it, or any other cancer.
