If the usb type C port is the charging port then apple could easily overcome the lack of ports issue by making the AC adapter brick also function as a USB3 hub with 2 full size USB slots, it could even carry a MiniDP port as USB type c can carry a displayport signal.

Does no one remember this?

Think USB Type-C instead of lightning, and a single Type-C connector starts to make a little more sense with pass-through and daisy chain possibilities. Additionally ports on the power brick, mag safe on the other end of the cable (near the brick), and perhaps as another user mentioned the power brick can be connected to a inductive charging mat you set the laptop on may be options.

Electromagnetic Fields. A lot of people think being inundated with EM causes everything from headaches, to cancer, to weirdo babies with strangely large heads. Of course they're ignoring the fact that the Earth produces an ambient EM field that's higher than what your average gadget puts out.

There was a big nerd argument about it down in Community Discussion a little while back.
A 310 kW Motor is not an average gadget.

Looks like more than just an artists renditions too me, i would put money on it that the final product looks very very similar, if not exact.

I Haven't checked, but if that's the case I guess its okay to tell people to have a heart attack, but don't imply they might get the less likely cancer.

The same dude lecturing someone about karma is wishing people get cancer because they posted something about a computer on the internet they didn't agree with. Stay classy.

Wow, did you actually get Larry-K's post removed by a moderator?

His post was probably removed for trolling. So was mine. First time on macrumors? It happens...

Yeah, that's true. Thing is, no one's been able to produce a single shred of evidence that prolonged exposure to EMF does anything to the body in normal, everyday doses. As long as you're not being actively burned to a crisp by it, it's doing nothing to you.

Even studies on self described electromagnetic hypersenstive people haven't turned up anything besides good old fashioned hypochondria.

We already have staff who are running out of ports. Wired ethernet is required in order to auto-mount home directories at login, for machines to be managed when nobody is logged in, enterprise data backed up to the corporate servers, not to mention imaged or upgraded - on a multi-VLAN enterprise Wi-Fi network with full user creds required (i.e.: not just a simple Wi-Fi password, something EFI doesn't support).
And everyone with an Air or Retina has an external display at their desk. This means that on MBAs - which only have 1 Thunderbolt - it's necessary to use the display/Thunderbolt adapter, while resorting to plugging the machine into Ethernet/USB adapter (which is appallingly slow). And, of course, power.
So, three ports down to one.
But people, especially executives, will insist they have to have one.
This should be fun. :-/
What exactly is the point of an ultra-portable laptop tethered 100% of the time by Ethernet and display cables? Enterprise use is definitely not the intended audience of the MacBook Air. I applaud Apple if they do not base their decisions on this use case in the with respect to an updated Air.

If your organization can't tell the executives "No" when it comes to IT, then you're the next Sony Pictures Entertainment waiting to happen.

I wouldn't be surprised if this air does have a solution for your issues though. USB Type-C can carry all of your connections through a single cable, not to mention the display can power the laptop so the power adapter can stay at home or in the bag.

This would be so horrible. Some damn micro USB??? So I won't be able to use my normal USB stick or bluetooth mouse without some damn external accessory? I like to think that Apple wouldn't be THAT stupid. But I seriously don't know anymore. I think they are willing to go very far only to make it thinner.

Who cares how thin the Air can get? I think the first Air (2008) still is amazingly thin and plenty enough. Just imagine the battery life and ports available if they would've kept that thickness.

If you're plugging in a Bluetooth dongle to use a Bluetooth mouse with your Bluetooth-equipped MacBook, you're doing it wrong.

This is obviously made for the casual user market. Most of the time, what these light users need is a keyboard, and...that's it. Uploading images/songs/ apps/files from your iPad/iPhone to the laptop can be done through iCloud, or Bluetooth. This is a completely minimalist solution relying on cloud storage & wireless functionality. I like Apple's specialization here. Very cool product line if the rumor is true.

Don't worry, MBP Retina line will still be around for those who like more options, connections and ....holes.

----------

If I have my way, I would go even further and have a wireless battery charging system and this laptop will have only one port: the headphones jack.

Imagine the marketing campaign: "A brand new 12" laptop from Apple, with no string attached."

:D

YES!

I disagree. For one, airplay isn't the most stable thing and I prefer the benefits of HDMI. iCloud doesn't store everything I need, not to mention you need an internet connection for it.

The problem with one port for me is hyping us all up for lightning then taking it away. If we at least had 4 type-c ports I'd be fine, but this is pushing it.

I assume you want 4 type-c ports for 3 devices in addition to the power adapter. If you're consistently plugging 3 devices into a MacBook AIR, you're doing it wrong. Good job making your portable laptop non-portable.

Good luck telling Apple to drill holes in their laptop case so that heat will naturally rise. A heat sync is much more effective.

----------

I'm shocked! It's called using a heat sync which computer makers have been doing for 35 years.

I don't know what you're syncing your heat too, but perhaps a heat SINK would help.

I think the point is to re-focus the MBA back to what it was supposed be - an ultra lightweight portable device. Over the years it's morphed into their "consumer" laptop instead. It doesn't make sense to have a 13" MBA and 13" MBP essentially competing with each other.

Presumably having re-focussed the MBA they'll make the MBPs more of a consumer/pro hybrid affordable to all rather than just a pro device. Hopefully they'll upgrade the MBPs to 14" and 16".

You, hleewell, and I are all on the same page here!

since its going to be so thin, does that mean that theres not going to be a retina display????

I pointed out that you sterotypically insulted an entire region of the U.S., dude, that's classy?

I'm not saying it's not a wonderful thing to sit a few feet away from it, for an hour or two everyday, but I'd rather not.

Hmm, the lack of ports really limits the functionality. I don't see this as an upgrade. The current MBA is thin enough, in terms of a laptop I don't see what thinner gets you.

This is just a product of Ive's obsession with thinness, with his pathological inclination to always favour form at the expense of function.

I think Jobs kept him in check whilst he was alive but now the Golden Child of Apple has no one left to tell him when his **** stinks.

I'm just waiting for him to do one of his cheesy product introductions on a laptop and boast about shaving off another 4mm by "freeing" us from the constraints of having a screen.

Once they removed the super drive from the Macbook Pro models, I saw no reason for the Air model to even exist. The 13" Macbooks are almost as thin as the Air and a 13" screen is much more pleasant (IMO) to use than an 11" screen. Moving to a 12" AIR model seems superfluous at best. Given Apple's history of wiping out models that are cannibalizing sales from other models, the AIR really has no right to even exist. Make a darn gaming notebook using the GPU from the new iMac 5K instead with a 17" screen (I'd settle for a 15" screen though since they seem to hate the 17" idea these days) and bigger battery. THAT would be a unique model that would not cannibalize anything. I'd buy one. I have no use for current models other than that iMac 5k and I don't like it because it's an iMac. A MBP that could drive a 4K docking station and do everything from Logic Pro to mid-end gaming (even if I had to install Windows to have a large selection) would be sweet indeed.

So you see no reason for the Mac that sells the most to exist? I'm happy you are not in Apple product development.

Looks good..

Appears to have 4 speakers too.

I can see that new keyboard getting in the way.... Where would u rest when u'r typing the outer keys ? Looks like now u must be a touch typist or forever resting on the keyboard and making mistakes.

12-inch is too small for me though... It took me weeks for my eyes to adjust to my 13-inch.

Yeah, it could make for a helluva nut baker if it doesn't have good heat management.

And considering you'll be spending nearly $100,000 for one, it damn well better.
I'm not impressed by a car full of laptop batteries, but I would be by a laptop, that runs on internal combustion.

One port to rule them all!!!

Seems like a pretty clear trend. Apple's goal is eventually to have ALL Apps/Data in the cloud ONLY. They start by foisting the idea of a portless computer onto the low end email/surf crowd. They then phase it in across the board. When the complaints start the sheep will accuse complainers of being Luddites. And Apple will explain that there is not enough demand left for machines with ports, expandability, etc. Mac Pro will be dropped. If trend is adopted across PC industry, hard drive manufacturers will try to replace wired drives with wireless personal drive, but Apple will eventually force you to HAVE to use the cloud for even your most personal data.

This plan has been approved by the NSA.

The MacBook inches yet closer to its ineluctable union with the iPad. A part of me sighs.

The days of processing power being a major requirement are a thing of the past for the majority of users. Most people's main requirements are battery longevity & portability. It's why thin & light notebooks and tablets are wildly popular.

Apple still offer MacBook Pro's for people that do need the horsepower of a fully featured notebook but it's clear that ultrabooks/thin & light/tablets are what most people want to use to do their stuff. So it's why at CES we have seen some really amazing machines from a variety of manufactures. Even Dell managed to pull this stunner out the bag:

What kind of fancy supermarkets do you go to?

For me I use multiple ports at a time. With USBC doubling as charging, then that leaves at least 3 left. I connect cameras, my iPhone and other devices to my computers.

In Holland we have supermarkets with free WiFi. Actually, a lot of stores have that (including McDonalds for example). You won't have to charge all the time, your iPhone is charged in half an hour, and you won't keep your camera plugged in I presume? Even if you want to use external storage for example. Plug the hard drive, transfer files, unplug. It's not ideal, but if you need it to be there all the time you are a professional or you are way to deep into photography ;-)

----------

By this logic, of course you don't need a keyboard or trackpad. Everyone should be on the ipad. The only people who would need a keyboard or trackpad are the people working with music and video. But for those people they invented the Mac Pro. :D

You're kidding obviously but there's actually much truth in that. I think 80% of the people who use computers for browsing and stuff are just fine with only an iPad. An iPad 2 for that matter.

I see this as a device for those who want the portability of iPad but full keyboard/trackpad and running OS X. And for people that need more ports or more power there is the MBP. It does make me wonder about the future of iPad though. I hope Apple doesn't neglect improving iPad software. We know Apple can make great hardware. It's software that needs work.

----------

Think about it iPads only have charging ports. This is the iPad Pro with a keyboard. There is no MacBook Air 12 inch. it's really an iPad Pro.

Um there was no reference to touch screen or detachable keyboard in this rumor. So I highly doubt this is an iPad. The report specifically said next generation MacBook Air.
