So it will only have one port, and that port will be used for charging. So basically, you can either charge, or you can use USB.

I wish they would include another port for USB sticks...but then again how many USB stick out there with Type C connector? There is always an adapter. Or maybe Apple will drive the industry again. C-type will be the future of USB connection, including USB3.0?

Are you kidding? I'm a native Californian, we're all beautiful and fit, but I have been known to enjoy a charcuterie plate now and then.

The nice thing about a Tesla is that you sit so low you could be shaped like a puddle and nobody would notice, and since you're next to a high intensity EMF you'll probably end up with leukemia anyway.

I'm still betting on the fire though.

High intensity EMF?

----------

Apple manages to find a new way to help us customers decide between "Air" and "Pro" line.

Air: Light, massive compromises in terms of ports, longer battery life.

Pro: heavier, minimal compromises in ports, shorter battery life.

Not sure if I like where Apple is going with this
.

It's a fair trade. And logical from business pov.

If I squint eyes, I see in these pictures an ARM fanless iOS laptop with a single Lightning connector and an audio jack :p

High intensity EMF?

Electromagnetic Fields. A lot of people think being inundated with EM causes everything from headaches, to cancer, to weirdo babies with strangely large heads. Of course they're ignoring the fact that the Earth produces an ambient EM field that's higher than what your average gadget puts out.

There was a big nerd argument about it down in Community Discussion a little while back.

Actually the type-C connector is part of the new USB 3.1 standard.

This would be so horrible. Some damn micro USB??? So I won't be able to use my normal USB stick or bluetooth mouse without some damn external accessory? I like to think that Apple wouldn't be THAT stupid. But I seriously don't know anymore. I think they are willing to go very far only to make it thinner.

Who cares how thin the Air can get? I think the first Air (2008) still is amazingly thin and plenty enough. Just imagine the battery life and ports available if they would've kept that thickness.

Until she tries to plug her current devices in and finds they won't fit.

That's when you become tech support!

Honestly, she has never plugged anything in to a computer before - even the charger. She doesn't have the confidence to, so we've always done it for her :p

I'm thinking more and more that Apple have custom-designed this for her!

The problem is that these "features" end up making their way to the pro models. I bought a cMBP before they went extinct simply because I use the dvd drive and Ethernet port and found it pointless to make it thinner so I can just carry around an accessory to reenable a feature. I'd rather have all the features in one box instead of having to deal with dongles and extra wires. Also, had a 17" model still been available I would have bought that. I wanted a retina screen and a damn blu-ray drive, but I just couldn't make do with the sacrifices for the retina. My current Macbookpro might just be the last Mac I buy honestly.

I bought a sony with all that and the next year bought a rMBP.

World's moved on - why get a Blue Ray drive when you can get near equivalent, or even better streaming, with more choice of products and services.

Sweet.
Reminds me of my 12-inch PowerBook Pro.
It still works fine. There is something very special about 12-inches.

And btw, its battery hasn't 'popped' yet – unlike both my 2007 and 2008 MacBook Pros. I seriously hate batteries popping – and I don't care if Apple calls it a safety feature – batteries don't have to pop. I'm fearing what will happen to our current MacBooks with integrated batteries in a few years.

You prefer it to explode? People sure are crazy..

We already have staff who are running out of ports. Wired ethernet is required in order to auto-mount home directories at login, for machines to be managed when nobody is logged in, enterprise data backed up to the corporate servers, not to mention imaged or upgraded - on a multi-VLAN enterprise Wi-Fi network with full user creds required (i.e.: not just a simple Wi-Fi password, something EFI doesn't support).
And everyone with an Air or Retina has an external display at their desk. This means that on MBAs - which only have 1 Thunderbolt - it's necessary to use the display/Thunderbolt adapter, while resorting to plugging the machine into Ethernet/USB adapter (which is appallingly slow). And, of course, power.
So, three ports down to one.
But people, especially executives, will insist they have to have one.
This should be fun. :-/

A docking station built into the power brick of the Macbook Air solves all the problems you describe. Even if Apple doesn't make it, someone else could. USB 3.1 isn't proprietary to Apple.

The speaker grills look ugly as they are in the rendering. Perhaps they would look better as one long strip.

As for one USB 3.1 port, I think that would be extremely limiting. Apple already have Thunderbolt 2.0 across their product line which is superior in performance and they could make a small adaptor with USB, FW, Ethernet and HDMI that takes care of any peripherals for this laptop. Surely they could flatten the Thunderbolt connector to fit it on to this thinner profile design.

It's not "some damn micro usb." It's a type C connector, and part of the USB 3.1 standard. This is what everyone is going to use on their computers moving forward. "normal" USB sticks of the future will use this port, so will mice, printers and cell phones. and not because of Apple, but because it is intended to replace the larger USB ports we see today.

Apple's 12-Inch Retina MacBook Air Shown in Artist's Renditions

Those renditions depict possibly the ugliest laptop I've ever seen:).

I treated myself to an 11" Air for XMas. I debated whether to wait for the rumoured 12", but I really like the 11" (non-retina screen and all). All the lost connections would be a real deal-breaker for me; its a lot to sacrifice for a retina screen.

I'm willing to lose the SD card slot on my Air, but I need at least one type A USB connector and a magsafe, plus the headphone jack. If you want to add a type C connector, or put it in place of one of the type A connectors, fine. But there are simply too many existing devices to remove all the type A connectors at this point. I don't want to find an adapter when I want to plug in a random USB stick or whatever device I need to use. And if you remove the thunderbolt/mini-displayport, I wouldn't even consider buying it.

Something I've not seen mentioned is the shrunken keyboard. I liked how Apple keyboards are all the same, desktop and laptop. That will be a pain.

I don't see why they couldn't have just make keys like tab and shift much smaller and the keys used more often the same size.

Still, 'artists' renderings'...

no thanks apple!

so if i want to use a USB device, connect to HDMI, transfer SD card files, connect to thunderbolt then i will need to buy an adapter which will no doubt cost £20+ EACH. no way. especially considering this will probably cost at least £1000.

as long as it has retina and same battery life. no cable input or just one USB is fine for the MB air. The air isnt a workstation, its a mobile computer for casual use. Ill buy it! :)
