This should be the iPhone 7. What's coming this fall should be called iPhone 6ss if rumors are to be believed.

What functionality can the curved edges provide that will actually be useful?

Certainly better to hold in one hand.

Apple doesn't do gimmicks, and I don't think they would add on manufacturing costs just to create a "better looking" phone without justifying it with some practical functionality.

They made a "better looking" laptop without justifying why they had to get rid of practical functionality.

I hope not
i hope so. the curved edges on samsung i've always kind of admired. don't mind if they rip that off, i'd try it out.

i may actually skip an iPhone this year, will miracles never cease? whatever is coming soon doesn't seem to be very interesting, but the 2017 model sounds better each time. except: keep the ***** headphone jack, apple.. don't be a douche...

Revised it, probably a better way of wording it. ;) Honestly, though, it's not like curved screens are new tech or anything; who knows where the competition will be at in 2017?
If these rumors are true, there are non-trivial software and hardware issues to be resolved. iOS will have to be updated. How will the curved sections respond to 3D touch? How will volume, mute, and power buttons be placed/replaced? What will display in the extra real-estate when running older apps not written to take advantage of it? What sorts of new display models and APIs be needed? Will the parts of the screen that curve around to the side be available to display notifications when the phone is in standby? Should iOS be re-designed with a dark theme to take advantage of the power-savings of OLED?

I don't think Apple is likely to be ready to intelligently support this design this year.

All this curvy stuff is so gimmicky. I can't imagine Apple ever doing this.

IMO, either go big with the idea, or don't do it at all. What I want to see is real innovation with flexible screens. I want to see real innovative design again with phones.

We know OLED screens are capable of being rolling right up. Not tightly rolled, but certainly 35mm film style rolled. We also know Apple is capable of designing triangular, dual sided board layouts inside the cylindrical Mac Pro.

So, where's our rumors of phones where you roll the screen out (like camera film), with all the other phone parts contained inside a slender cylinder?

its pretty funny how this site has resigned itself to not reporting the 2016 iphone because its going to be a boring update and is instead writing articles on a phone that is likley a year and a half away from release. Honestly, no
R.I.P 2016 iPhone lol

Edit - Seems so gimmicky, much rather prefer eliminating the top and bottom bezels.

Eliminating the top and bottom bezel is unrealistic. There needs to be an ear speaker, and there needs to be somewhere on the bottom that you can touch to hold the phone without accidentally touching the screen edge. They can make those area very thin but not a wrap around like this. Who is to say that they don't wrap the sides and thin out the top and bottom. There needs to be something for mac rumours to save in order to report for the next year and a half.

why would you ever want to type on a phone with a rollable screen. If its rollable then its flexible. If its flexible then its not going to be stable when you tap on it

That's funny. Their marketing, and the keynote, stress that the macbook is purposely designed for the wireless world. I'm not sure how they can be anymore explicit in the decisions they made....

iPhone 8? Why not just call it iPhone 7 and call the 2016 model the 6S Pro or 6T or some bullcrap because it's sounding like that one's going to be a very minor upgrade.

As for Apple not doing this because it's "gimmicky", well, if they come out with his "touch bar" on the MBP, then gimmicks are the new thing.

look at the drop reports for the samsung edge phones, they do horribly compared to the iphone and HTC phones.
How do the drop results for the Samsung edge phones compare to those of the non-edge versions? I think that may be more useful as an indicator of problems with the Edge design, as opposed to problems with Samsung in general.

The iPhone released this fall may not be called the iPhone 7, but it almost certainly won't be called the 6ss.

Any reference to the "iPhone 7" is coming from analysts and journalists who don't know what Apple will name the device it releases this fall. It's not a terrible guess, since it follows the tick-tock pattern Apple has used three four times in the past (depending on whether you count the iPhone 3G and its followup the 3GS as fitting the pattern), but it's still a guess.
