Why the f*ck do we need a Phone that is MORE breakable ?
Because Apple and AAPL need what could be a saturated buyer's market to buy more often???
Or maybe repairs are very, very profitable???

Indeed. Doesn't even have to be cylindrical either, I'd imagine. Could just roll up inside the 'base' of the phone.

And that article (and photos) is from 2010. Yet we seem to be stuck in a phones-need-to-be-rectangular-and-flat impasse.
Anyone find it weird that Samsung has such a ridiculously similar product naming strategy?
Their flagship phones are S6, S7? Isn't that like the same as Apple's 6S, 7S? and yet Samsung puts their S7 out a year before Apple so they can be in the right? Shameless.
No it's just you. How is it weird? Galaxy S, S2, S3, S4... It's simple number progression. Did you think it was shameless when the flagships were the S5 and the iP6?Anyone find it weird that Samsung has such a ridiculously similar product naming strategy?

There's always the chance the 2017 iPhone will be a let down compared to the rumors. I'd say get the iPhone 7 in September, and if the 2017 iPhone is amazing then sell your iPhone 7 and buy the 2017 iPhone too. There will always be something better coming out in the future and there's no point in holding out forever.I have an iPhone 5s and was super excited about getting an iPhone 7 this year, but all these 2017 iPhones rumors just make me super sad.
Didn't gorilla glass start with the iPhone 4?I hate holding them. I think its uncomfortable. My buddy got one and was raving about it - "... and it has this special kind of glass". I explained to him that the glass is gorilla glass, everyone uses it thanks to iPhone 1, I don't like Android, and it's uncomfortable to hold.
You bring up some good points. That's why I think it's good that Apple let OLED mature before it's possible use in iPhones. A lot of the negatives about the tech have been worked out sufficiently to make it viable for iPhone screens. Some things will be harder to solve than others. Easiest to me is the problem of older apps. That's already solved. As with 3D Touch, not all apps take advantage of it. I think the same will happen if Apple adopts an edge screen. Apple doesn't need a dark theme since OLED handles white a heck of a lot better. Android's Lollipop and Marshmallow are primarily white. That being said, a dark theme would be pretty slick aesthetically speaking. Plus it would be advantageous to the battery. If these rumors are true, there are non-trivial software and hardware issues to be resolved. iOS will have to be updated. How will the curved sections respond to 3D touch? How will volume, mute, and power buttons be placed/replaced? What will display in the extra real-estate when running older apps not written to take advantage of it? What sorts of new display models and APIs be needed? Will the parts of the screen that curve around to the side be available to display notifications when the phone is in standby? Should iOS be re-designed with a dark theme to take advantage of the power-savings of OLED?
I don't think Apple is likely to be ready to intelligently support this design this year.
Yep. Traditional cases would cover the edges and make them worthless. You could try a case design that grabs the top and bottom bezel and hope it stays on. I think it would have to be pretty rigid. You could try to go without a case and end up with smashed glass on both sides. There's also the problem of inadvertently touching the screen while just trying to hold it. Why does the screen have to be curved at all?honest question: how do you design a protective case for this phone? I drop my phone. It's a fact of life.
I want edge to edge and welcome this design change, but...
I hope not. I just returned my samsung s7 edge and got an iphone 6s plus instead. My fingers/grip kept touching the screen and randomly would press things. Impossible to use IMO. Maybe I'm the only one, but it's a dumb design and gives absolutely NO benefit. The screen edges start to warp so text looks weird, pictures darken in the edges. Pressing edges to get extra apps? Sure, or just create another swipe from right on a normal phone for the same functionality.
Again, my two cents, but edge screens is not as good as it is made out to be.
More proof that Apple has nothing exciting on the table when you have to hype something that won't be available for almost 1 1/2 yrs! Smartphones could be dinosaurs by then.
The curve edge screen is such a pointless gimmick. Can't understand why people like this? The rolled-off edges as shown in the picture of the Vivo create reflections and distortions of the image along the edge of the screen. It also seems likely to increase the incidence of damage from bumps and drops. I don't think this is likely to be adopted by Apple.
