Everyone is bashing this but I really dig the Galaxy S7 Edge design, just hate the software. So yes please, Apple.

Haha I like it too. I feel like many people are just fanboys and won't admit to the feature being "copied," but instead calling it a gimmick. It may be a gimmick or whatnot, but it sure is NOT useless. The S7 is a very nicely built device, deserves recognition.

I hope not. I just returned my samsung s7 edge and got an iphone 6s plus instead. My fingers/grip kept touching the screen and randomly would press things. Impossible to use IMO. Maybe I'm the only one, but it's a dumb design and gives absolutely NO benefit. The screen edges start to warp so text looks weird, pictures darken in the edges. Pressing edges to get extra apps? Sure, or just create another swipe from right on a normal phone for the same functionality.

Again, my two cents, but edge screens is not as good as it is made out to be.

i had the exact opposite reaction when i held a s7 edge.

holding the s7edge makes the iphone feel like you're wielding a big fat brick.

after this reply, I will nto be responding to you anymore.

Both links you provided are completely irrelevant to your thesis. The first is a chart that a 5 year old can construct. The second is passing on opinion as fact.

Youve never heard of the term opportunity cost, and in this specific argument, opportunity cost of time. In a vacuum, you are obviously right. Each successive iterative release is of course an improvement over hte previous one. But when you factor in time, you wont always come to the same conclusion, as each release is spaced out 1 year from each other.

I agree it can look nice "from far" (when you look someone with a S7 EDGE), but what is really the plus of these curved screens in everyday usage?
It's a real question I've never used them but I can't figure it out

The new S7 EDGE is a stunning phone design, just too big for me, I personally feel the 6S 4.6" is the best size for me, if they make it a curved glass screen too I would be very happy. All of Samsung's curved edge designs are just too big for my linking.

God I hope not. The curved glass on the Samsung Edge is just a gimmick. And it actually makes the screen appear smaller. Just give me a nice, big, flat screen please. And more battery please. I don't need it thinner, I'm not trying to shave with it.
the curved glass on the iphone 6 is a gimmick too IMO. and I agree with your points

Really hope it doesn't. Every time I see one of those galaxy edge phones I just think "there's an idiot that was tricked by a marketing gimmick". Oh you can see your notifications on the side? Thats handy...

Personally, I'm so sick of the iPhone and all other smartphones for that matter. It's all window dressing over the bigger issue; no one knows what to do next

Bingo! Every recent smartphone release is doing something many people don't realize, it's buying time for each company until one of those companies comes up with something big and hopefully Apple/Samsung can find a way to legally copy (or not legally if they can manage some shady maneuver).

Having seen comparison tests of a Galaxy S7 Edge and Apple iPhone (the high-end competitor) being dropped and the S7 couldn't cut it because of the glass-around-the-edge design and how such cases impede the point of having glass going around the edge, I don't think Apple playing "me too" is a bright idea this time.

Who needs to have an IQ lower than or equal to 20 to be able to be duped? Also, in a culture whose colleges teach "Ethics" classes, don't companies have the responsibility to not screw over customers to begin with? Customers don't know any better and put yourself fin their place, they want honesty just as they are honest. They do not want to be taken advantage of. Do you like being taken advantage of? Why or why not?

Okay so Apple may be doing this as an a change to the design but this can't be the entire presentation.

There has to be some innovative feature to come. What happened to showing new features; innovative features where they'd bring up some developers to show how it works and how it will have an immediate impact on the field? So this may be true for only PART of the new phone to come... perhaps.

Actually it is

It's an awesome looking phone with great features. Just because Apple don't have it yet doesn't mean it isn't great to have as it is

This rumor is going to seem derivative to a lot of people because the Samsung has a display that curves on the sides and because a Samsung phone is pictured, but it isn't necessarily. Curved screens have been the subject of speculation for years now, well before Samsung used one. The question has always been what advantage they might offer over flat screens. It's very possible (likely, even) that Apple wouldn't use a curved screen unless and until it has a good idea how it could contribute something useful. I therefore find this rumor much more exciting than the reality of the curved-screen Samsung.

Having said that, it seems a year too late if Apple indeed is targeting 2017. Even if this feature is awesome, Apple may be underestimating how eager iPhone users are for something new.

Please Apple, no.

I hate those curved TVs too.

I think the curve is functional the larger the screen and the closer it is to the viewer. But admittedly it is a gimmick on many TVs because the TVs are too small/sit too far from the viewer for it to be of any benefit.

Had a friend who bought the Edge, hated it with a passion specifically because of the "edge". To be completely honest, what benefit does it give the user other than boasting rights to say I have a curved screen on my phone and it goes around the edge. Whoop-de-do, no one cares. I'm satisfied without a curved screen, don't need the gimmick to be productive.

Instead of having a wrap around screen why don't we go for human and have it curve vertically so it fits your cheek better when you are on the phone? Oh wait, kids today don't know that's what the phone's intended use is.

http://www.lg.com/us/lg-g-flex-phones

LG flex did this. The intended purpose of a classic "phone" is indeed to talk, but "smartphones" are obviously for so much more. I talk on my phone the same amount I have ever talked on the phone, but now I do most things that used to require a computer on my smartphone.

Apple is all about added functionality through design.

What functionality can the curved edges provide that will actually be useful?

Apple doesn't do gimmicks, and I don't think they would add on manufacturing costs just to create a "better looking" phone without justifying it with some practical functionality.

I guess this could just boil down to difference of opinion, but I have yet to find the practical functional aspect of a thinner design (with thinner battery).

Or a true functional aspect of Siri (I personally rarely use it, and think it's a gimmick more and more with every iOS).

I'm not saying whether curved displays or whatever may be gimmicky or function, but just wanted to mention that I personally (among many others) don't agree that Apple in recent years has been making functional designs.

With the death of SJ, it seems Jony Ive's gone unchecked with his thin and light design philosophy, making some wacky and unwieldy designs.

My friend hated his phone and promptly bought an iPhone after his contract was up. I honestly think it's a gimmick for high school students and people who have no use for a smartphone but buy one anyways.
lol that's the exact description people have for iPhones not Samsung phones

People who get phones like the edge are wanting it because they want a real smartphone where you can make the most of your smartphone experience and make It how you want it

Think you've got the two the wrong way around

R.I.P 2016 iPhone lol

Edit - Seems so gimmicky, much rather prefer eliminating the top and bottom bezels.

OLED is great but for the love of God, can they please make Siri usable?! I mean a complete overhaul. Google, Amazon, hell, even the Xfinity voice remote are WORLDS better by many magnitudes. I swear, Google Now understands every damn thing I say, even if I stutter or correct myself, the thing eerily picks up on it and gets what I was really saying. I don't know how it does it, but it's freakin brilliant and blazing fast.

Why has Apple been unable to solve its serious voice recognition problems?

Though the 2017 iPhone is more than a year away from launching, we're already hearing non-stop rumors about the device due to the major design changes Apple is expected to introduce. The latest rumor, coming from IHS analyst Kevin Wang, suggests the 2017 iPhone will include a dual-curve OLED display that covers the left and right edges of the device.

On Chinese social networking site Weibo (via PhoneArena), Wang said Apple will release a device with sloping edges similar to the Vivo XPlay 5 or the Galaxy S7 Edge.

Apple is already rumored to be using flexible OLED displays for the 2017 iPhone, which will be necessary for any kind of dramatically curved display. It is not clear from Wang's statement how far the display will extend to the edges of the device and whether it will be a subtle curve for design purposes or a functional wraparound display as Samsung uses in its Galaxy Edge devices. The Galaxy Edge's wraparound display features side buttons and alerts accessible when the phone is face down.

Wang does not offer details on where he is sourcing his information from, but it is presumably coming from the Asian supply chain and Apple's myriad manufacturing partners. Supply chain information can be difficult to interpret at times and Wang does not have a well-known track record, but he has shared some semi-accurate information on the release of the iPhone SE. Earlier this week, Wang said the iPhone 7 will have 32GB as minimum storage tier.

Apple has reportedly secured 5.8-inch OLED displays from Samsung, and a previous analyst prediction has suggested that a display of that size could perhaps be used to wrap around the edges of a 5.5-inch iPhone, speculation that agrees with Wang's prediction.

Other rumors about the 2017 iPhone, which may be called the "iPhone 8" instead of the traditional "iPhone 7s" because of the changes expected, include an edge-to-edge bezel-free display with built-in Touch ID functionality, no home button, and a glass body.

An edge-to-edge display that extends upwards towards the top and bottom of the device, as has been rumored, does not seem to mesh with rumors of a wraparound display, leaving a lot of questions about the actual display we'll see in the 2017 iPhone. As the 2017 launch date creeps closer, we'll undoubtedly learn more about the device, giving us a clearer picture of the changes Apple is implementing.
