Yep. Traditional cases would cover the edges and make them worthless. You could try a case design that grabs the top and bottom bezel and hope it stays on. I think it would have to be pretty rigid. You could try to go without a case and end up with smashed glass on both sides. There's also the problem of inadvertently touching the screen while just trying to hold it. Why does the screen have to be curved at all?
Forgive me, but how is this even an issue. There are literally hundreds of cases for the Edge series of phones. The screen doesn't have to be curved, they choose to make it curved. If someone doesn't want the curved edge, they could easily get a regular flat S7. I'm pretty sure if, and that's a big if, Apple decided to adopt a curved edge they would also have the flat option.

No, this is not it. If I wanted Samsung, I would get Samsung.

Flat glass front. Flat glass back, with continuous glass curved edges that meet the front. Think iPod touch profile, but all glass and without protruding camera. Reduce top bezel and bottom bezels by 50% and left and right bezels by 25%. Reduce or if possible remove the gap running around all four sides of the display where it meets the bezel.
Sounds almost like you want an S7;):p:D

iPhone 8? Why not just call it iPhone 7 and call the 2016 model the 6S Pro or 6T or some bullcrap because it's sounding like that one's going to be a very minor upgrade.

As for Apple not doing this because it's "gimmicky", well, if they come out with his "touch bar" on the MBP, then gimmicks are the new thing.
Wouldn't be surprised if they drop the S and all other monikers starting with the 2017 iPhone. The tick-tock-tock cycle will get ridiculous with all of the conventions. Just call it iPhone 8 2017, iPhone 8 2018, iPhone 8 2019.

Vivo X Play, shame on your copycat Samsung Galaxy Edge design! (Wonder how Samesung likes it?)

Apple, please don't also copy that barf of a phone design.

It wouldn't surprise me a bit if Samsung is supplying the display to Vivo and making some serious premium for the technology and design. Samsung wins either way.

God I hope not. The curved glass on the Samsung Edge is just a gimmick. And it actually makes the screen appear smaller. Just give me a nice, big, flat screen please. And more battery please. I don't need it thinner, I'm not trying to shave with it.

Though the 2017 iPhone is more than a year away from launching, we're already hearing non-stop rumors about the device due to the major design changes Apple is expected to introduce. The latest rumor, coming from IHS analyst Kevin Wang, suggests the 2017 iPhone will include a dual-curve OLED display that covers the left and right edges of the device.

On Chinese social networking site Weibo (via PhoneArena), Wang said Apple will release a device with sloping edges similar to the Vivo XPlay 5 or the Galaxy S7 Edge.

Apple is already rumored to be using flexible OLED displays for the 2017 iPhone, which will be necessary for any kind of dramatically curved display. It is not clear from Wang's statement how far the display will extend to the edges of the device and whether it will be a subtle curve for design purposes or a functional wraparound display as Samsung uses in its Galaxy Edge devices. The Galaxy Edge's wraparound display features side buttons and alerts accessible when the phone is face down.

Wang does not offer details on where he is sourcing his information from, but it is presumably coming from the Asian supply chain and Apple's myriad manufacturing partners. Supply chain information can be difficult to interpret at times and Wang does not have a well-known track record, but he has shared some semi-accurate information on the release of the iPhone SE. Earlier this week, Wang said the iPhone 7 will have 32GB as minimum storage tier.

Apple has reportedly secured 5.8-inch OLED displays from Samsung, and a previous analyst prediction has suggested that a display of that size could perhaps be used to wrap around the edges of a 5.5-inch iPhone, speculation that agrees with Wang's prediction.

Other rumors about the 2017 iPhone, which may be called the "iPhone 8" instead of the traditional "iPhone 7s" because of the changes expected, include an edge-to-edge bezel-free display with built-in Touch ID functionality, no home button, and a glass body.

An edge-to-edge display that extends upwards towards the top and bottom of the device, as has been rumored, does not seem to mesh with rumors of a wraparound display, leaving a lot of questions about the actual display we'll see in the 2017 iPhone. As the 2017 launch date creeps closer, we'll undoubtedly learn more about the device, giving us a clearer picture of the changes Apple is implementing.

Galaxy S7 beat them to it.

Seeing that Samsung makes the display for the Vivo Xplay 5... I think they are quite happy about it. More money for them. It also helps Apple look how they are, severely outdated.

Ohhhhhh yeah! I just got an S7 Edge to rock with my 6S Plus. If Apple does dual edge screens I'm all in! Can't wait for September 2017 if true.

Edge to edge curved glass screen! Providing they can keep the same physical size as the current 4.7" iPhone 6S hell yes!!

I agree it can look nice "from far" (when you look someone with a S7 EDGE), but what is really the plus of these curved screens in everyday usage?
It's a real question I've never used them but I can't figure it out

Had a friend who bought the Edge, hated it with a passion specifically because of the "edge". To be completely honest, what benefit does it give the user other than boasting rights to say I have a curved screen on my phone and it goes around the edge. Whoop-de-do, no one cares. I'm satisfied without a curved screen, don't need the gimmick to be productive.

Instead of having a wrap around screen why don't we go for human and have it curve vertically so it fits your cheek better when you are on the phone? Oh wait, kids today don't know that's what the phone's intended use is.

its a design feature. Whether or not you like it is up to the end user, but people pay $100 more for 20%+ battery size, +0.4" screen on this generation's phone.

that's not a gimmick.

your friend has an OLED display. He has 20%+ battery size. he has 0.5" increased screen size.

if that's whoop de-do for you, you're simply biased.

My friend hated his phone and promptly bought an iPhone after his contract was up. I honestly think it's a gimmick for high school students and people who have no use for a smartphone but buy one anyways.

So you take an isolated incident and broadly apply it everything?

Apple aren't even trying to innovate anymore. They're just copying others.

But will market it as being innovative.

No one has innovated since Palm. iPhone, Android, iPad, Surface, Blackberry... it's all the same, it's just future improvements on something that was made. I innovated this sentence, if you correct it, you did not innovate a new answer, you just improved upon mine.

I can see where your first statement makes sense to someone who is an outsider, but to anyone who has owned an iPhone typically the non-S models are super buggy (iPhone 3G lacked performance and battery, iPhone 4 = had problems with antennae , iPhone 5 had problems as well, iPhone 6 lacked 3d touch) and S models improve upon the previous generation by taking the previous design and making sure that all the bugs are fixed. (Hardware bugs) and introduces new software features. Also the S models are superior in the fact that S models have statistically lasted longer through update cycles than their immediate predecessor. Look at all of Apple's greatest iPhones, the 3GS, the 4S, the 5S. Who wants to bet on the 6S being the next one in this list?

red herring, all of what you wrote is immaterial.

The "edge" as samsung has marketed this year isnt a gimmick, its a design feature with additional benefits of a larger screen and battery size.

that's an irrefutable fact. People arent just paying 100 for a curved oled. they are getting a bigger screen and bigger battery.
