Apple's 2022 MacBook Air: Everything We Know

The M1 chip could feature the same number of computing cores as the M1 (eight),
Isn't the first M1 supposed to be M2?
I'm starting to doubt white bezels AND a notch. Either the bezels are white with no notch or they're black with a notch like the new 14" & 16" MacBook Pros.
Id argue both white bezel and a notch is not something that is off the table, but rather a deliberate design choice.
If they make the notch white, im gonna poop

then again a black notch and white bezel would look weird too possibly
Better anticipate a notched white bezel laptop because Apple has largely gone away with black notch on this M1 Pro M1 Max MacBook Pro.
we've had white keyboards on Apple laptops and computers before. Perhaps before your time in the Apple-verse?
No issues with "Yellowing"
Heh. “Yellowing” is often linked to “retro”, so Apple can call it a “retro MacBook Pro”, appeasing a unique group of customers.
Notch, I’m in ???
Can I call you “notch lover”?
this will be my new computer for sure, tried iPad Pro, but it’s just a big iPhone.

Need macOS
iPad with macOS is too close to MacBook Air. iPad with iPadOS is just a glorified iPhone, now with more power.

Jeezzzz, a notch and white bezels.

That’s like sitting in a cinema that has blinds and white walls.
The beauty is, this machine WILL SELL EXTREMELY WELL no matter what. Talking about Apple loyalists and those who are locked in lifetime.

The MacBook Air is not a suffix…it has a different design, weight and thickness. The “more or less the same thickness” sentiment is absolutely ridiculous.
By that logic, the iPad Air and iPad Pro should also have different design, weight, and thickness. But the iPad Air is only 0.03 pounds (the weight of an empty soda can) lighter than the iPad Pro 11" and are visually identical if not for the camera array on the rear.

All I'm saying is a lot has changed from the days when Steve pulled the original MacBook Air out from an envelope. The introduction of OLED and Apple silicon have imbued 'thinness' into literally everything. 'Air' no longer has the same meaning and/or psychological effect with the average consumer as it used to.

What would be the design criteria for a laptop to inherit and maintain the 'MacBook Air' name today: slimmer than the new MBP? That's easy. A wedge form-factor? Um sure, whatever. I'm willing to bet that for Apple, 'Air' at the end of 'MacBook' today means it still ships only with USB-C ports.

Well, the thing is, Apple has 10 million of them already in production…

I would buy it at a discount.

The same way I bought 128GB SSD at a discount.

Yes, rather hard to hide a white notch in full screen mode

I’m not an Apple apologist by any means. I’m trying to keep an open mind on this.

If you had one of these, top of the line benchmarks, with the white notch… It’s worth something.

A refurbished machine, they knock off $150 sometimes.

Sort of the same idea, right?

If Photoshop was crashing on M1 sometimes, and Adobe said, OK, $14.99 a month, you’d probably just SIGH.

So, you save some money on the white notch and they fix it in 2026.

Or you buy the $3,000 MacBook Pro.

Last thoughts on this…

A normal human running Light Mode probably won’t notice the notch.

An Apple dev using Dark Mode, in the midnight hour, is going to spend all day on MacRumors. :)

Will the M2, as potentially to be used on any Air replacement, be 3nm?

Will that enable performance at least equivalent to the M1 to be achieved with no fan?

And will Apple launch 12, 14 and 16-inch screens? Yes, three models.

Can’t wait for the yellowing keyboard stories

I have had a 2006 white plastic MacBook 13” and despite being all white with shades of light grey it aged remarkably well. Especially the keyboard, as the black ones tend to develop these glossy “polished” spots on them after a while. Not a fan of white bezels, however, as they are all black nowadays, except for an iMac. ??‍♂️

This is a major reach. If there's one thing that's true about Apple, it's that they do NOT cling to the past. This retreat to some of the old ports is rare, but the exception sort of proves the rule. They'll just do what they think needs to be done when it needs to be done. You really think they're going to keep the current design forever just because "Air = wedge shaped" or some nonsense, or is this just a troll?
Fair point. E.g. which is thinner/lighter/more 'air'-like today: the iPad Air 4 or the standard iPad?

What does 'air' mean these days? I think it merely means 'low-to-mid-range'.

I don’t understand why a punch hole camera is so complicated.

I could fix this in 5 minutes.

1. Cut a circle on the LCD panel the size of the lens
2. Put the LCD panel on top of the lens
3. Put the Gorilla glass on top of the panel

Logic Board -> Camera -> LCD with Punch Hole and Bezels -> Gorilla Glass

Done! Problem fixed.

The LCD panel is the red part. Just cut a circular hole in it before glueing it to the Gorilla glass.

I cant wait for Apple to gate ALL new macOS features behind the latest MacBook every single year, so people would need to always buy a new MacBook to enjoy new features, otherwise would only be security and bug fixes. If Apple hates past so much, they could’ve done so much more with way more aggressive stance.
