Right in place of the the “new” M1 Airs that Walmart have been (are still?) selling. It’s a proven market. Interesting question is whether this will even appear on the regular Apple Store…I’m honestly not sure where this fits into the MacBook/iPad ecosystem.
…running full MacOS not ChromeOS/Android, not dependent on Google and capable of doing almost anything that a M1 Mac could do - which is a lot more than a web-app client. So, not a Chromebook then.What they are building is basically a more expensive Chromebook.
As for “expensive” - no reason that it should cost Apple more to make than a half-decent Chromebook so - whatever it costs to consumers - they can offer deep, bulk discounts to education. Question is, though, can Apple make money by selling services to education? If so, they can afford to “give away the razors”.
