Great for those for whom money is no object because it's written off as a work expense or whathaveyou, but for us common folk a $1,000 monitor is a big pill to swallow, when there are other great options out there for much much less.

The more options for the consumer the merrier though!

UK £899 is a serious let down - i was expecting £799 which already includes a big premium.. i guess they don't plan to change pricing next year when VAT increases and in the meantime earn a bit of extra cash.. cheecky

i think you'll find that everything on the UK apple store will go up by another 2.5% in january - we might as well start the moaning threat now!

Let us see now, in Japan it is 95,000 yen, that equals about 96 yen to the dollar, but the dollar is only equal to 85 yen to the dollar, this display is way over priced. I do not expect this display to sell like hot cakes over here in Japan, one would have to be really apple crazy to buy an overpriced display like this, Dells 27 inch sells for less than 60,000 yen over here and that's a 40% discount compared to the price in the US. (of course Dell is not popular even here, mostly due to it's support) The Apple display would have to come down at least 11% in Japan to make it a comparable deal and even then it's still overpriced as far as I'm concerned. However, compared to 2002 or 2003 prices, displays are cheap now, where does that take you? There are no reviews on the Apple display even, what makes it worth that much? (Perhaps the Apple logo makes it worth it) My fellow Americans, this is not the 360 Yen to one dollar ratio era anymore, Americas money, thanks to the Financial Institutions in America (i.e. Wall Street) have crippled the American economy, (the Wall Street give away, meaning taxpayers money) wake up, this Apple display should be 75,000 yen over in Japan. Although I will admit, some fool will pay 95,000 yen for a untested display that no one has even touched yet, I await his or her review of it, but I still will not purchase one. Sorry, it looks OK, for America, but it is overpriced here in WA WA Land.

Like what? What better option is out there for less? I have looked and looked. Every display that is 27 inch or above that is cheaper than this display is actually not a high-res display and is in fact a 1920x1080 one. I am definitely not buying a display with such a low pixel density like that, I might as well buy a 40-inch HDTV at that point at least I would get more for my money. My 23 inch Apple Cinema Display I have now does 1920x1200, why would I downgrade resolution? Besides, I can sell my ACD to help pay for this one, so it's not like I am throwing down the full $999 for it.

If you actually look at displays with the same spec (or better) they are all more expensive than this one (in the US at least), and have less features (though they might trade them for more inputs). So if you want cheaper either you are going with a smaller display or one with a lower resolution, either way you aren't really getting a better deal but are just settling for something less than this to hurt your wallet less. There is nothing wrong with that, but it's not really the same thing at all.

Do some research before making blind statements like you did.

Let's assume an average 5% US Sales Tax, giving us $1048.95. That's currently £667.61. Add VAT @ 17.5% and you come to £784.44. I was expecting the final retail to be £799 or even £849 at a push. But no, Apple decide to make this £100 more than it really should be. Can't say that I'm suprised though.

I'll still buy one though. But I'm not happy about the US/UK price difference.

:apple:

Dell's similar model is the same price, if not more before discounts.

still, I would rather pop the less than $300 extra and get a refurb iMac dual core... then that pretty monitor can do work too!

Well that was a random timed release.

Anyway, good to know its finally out! However I'll be waiting to see what kind of prices online retailers will sell this for first...

let's hope there's no yellow screen issues that have plagued many iMac users...

and in the future apple should make imacs look like this... no bottom slab, just a frame around the screen. i really don't mind if the back is 5 cm thicker if they lose the bottom bit. :)

Height fail

For me this sounds as an epicfail: 2 cm less than the iMac

They have done the same thing with every Apple display in relation to the iMac every single time. It just hasn't happened in awhile because they discontinued the 24-inch iMac. Get over it, the display is made for many people and not just those with a 27 inch iMac.

I agree, I mean I won't be getting this 27" cause it was 9 months too late, I jumped at the U2711 cause Apple was taking way too long. As for resolution, its got the same horizontal resolution as the 30".

For those who cry at the price, this isnt a HDTV, cause I can get a 40" HDTV for less as well. If you are going to complain then stick with the lack if inputs or glossy display, but please don't moan about prices on an Apple forum

Make that $1,445.29 for Euro users! almost 50% markup on an item that they already make money! cannot see many of these being sold in Europe!.

If nobody buys them there is a chance they could lower the price. It still sucks though.

Take a minute to look at reality. Who cares? I'm not designer, a film editor, or any other type of professional who would require a High-Res monitor (and neither is 95% of the population). I am a project manager/scheduler who lives in the world of Primavera and Microsoft Excel. When I'm home relaxing I want to watch video, surf the web, listen to music, and get my email. And there are HUNDREDS OF MILLIONS of people like me who just would like a nice big monitor that's easy on the eyes.

My Acer 27" works quite well with my Mini and looks as good as my iMac. I enjoy surfing the web on it as well as watching Netflix streaming movies, and I could of bought 2 of them with change left over for what Apple wants for their "professional" $1000 monitor.

How come the "consumer friendly" Apple can't make a decent monitor for consumers to hook up to their Mini for a reasonable price, a monitor like almost every other hardware maker does???

I ordered two. I can't wait for them to get here. I've been dying for more screen real estate. I have a 24 and a 22 inch now and its not really cutting it.

I love the ACD and the glossy screen is a ton better for photo editing (before you flame please try a real world comparison like I did (for me and several of my friends who all switched to glossy) and be sure to use a calibration device for both the monitor and printer thank you much).

Mine sits by a window and I have zero glare issues. The screen is bright enough to kill any glare. (The only glare I see is when the screen is off). By far my favorite monitors on the market (and I've used lots and lots of monitors).

These will be a huge help when using Maya and texturing as well as programming. Hopefully they get here sooner rather than later :D

Let's not forget that people in the UK are paid in pounds, not dollars.

And let's not forget that a lot of the costs of each unit are in RMB and not USD. Apple's currency hedging strategy failure = additional cost for non-US customers.
