I went from a M1 MBP 14" to an M3 Air 15" (16gb) recently. The reason for me is the MBP felt too heavy when using it on my lap. The screen on the Air is....lesser than the Pro, particularly if you are sensitive to 60Hz vs. 120Hz refresh. For me the weight savings was worth the trade off.
Well you clearly didn’t need the extras the pro offered in the first place. It’s a good thing you found your goldilocks laptop.

MicroSD

I have an extra 1.5TB added to my mac ($130). Relatively slow storage, but works perfectly with my 1TB+ tv library.
This kind of work-around annoys me more than anything. Apple deliberately engineers everything they do so precisely to work in certain ways. They could easily have a slot to put your own M2 drive in there for extra storage. Maybe even an innovative "quick change" one. Might even be good thing for a "pro" machine. But they don't.

The 14 inch MBP weighs 3.5 lbs and the 15 inch MacBook Air weighs 3.3 lbs. Practically the same. 😊

You can keep your windows. I’ll raise you a Linux.
Actually I would like to dual boot and use Linux as the primary OS and Windows only for TurboTax.

But I need to figure out how to install and configure it. I have only use Linux and Unix in work settings where admin was handled by someone else.

Most likely, not selling enough since Windows Laptops with better specs are far cheaper than MacBook Pros(those who have MBP already, are not looking at M4). The RAM is still stingy and storage increase make your wallet fly if you are eyeing reasonable configuration that can last long enough. With M4 line up that is supposed to handle Apple Intelligence which probably going to make many of the earlier generation MBP not a great option to have, are being dumped for cheap.

Ordinarily I'd feel like a schmuck for paying $2K for a 14" Windows laptop, but then I remind myself it's 1 lb lighter than this and has an Eyesafe certified display.

Apple needs to do more.
I hear you. You’re right. Not trying to one-up you, just adding: I’m laughing all the way to the bank with my 32GB, 2TB Windows laptop. That’s with an Nvidia RTX 4060 in tow. All for about $1500. No regrets. Nada.

512GB. I'm interested in the demand for such a laptop. Personally, I don't have a lot of software installed, and I'm almost at 500 GB w/o a bunch of video. Of course one can add some pretty speed external storage, but that takes away (slightly?) from portability, simplicity, etc.
I have 256 GB on my Air and about 130 used.

People are different.

Don't anybody do it. Unless you absolutely NEED a new Macbook Pro TODAY to finish to meet your deadline, just wait it out a couple more months.
Yes, wait until the (according to Macrumors users) overpriced and underwhelming spec bump arrives…

1499.- sounds like a really good deal, even if an updated 1999.- one is around the corner.

Good for you. If it doesn’t run MacOS, I don’t care. Give it a rest, we’ve heard all the arguments already.

Apple’s market share is currently increasing. So, nah.
(those who have MBP already, are not looking at M4).
Really? Noone with an M1 or still on Intel will want an M4?
The RAM is still stingy and storage increase make your wallet fly if you are eyeing reasonable configuration that can last long enough.
And you know what? That’s exactly what is happening, people make their wallets fly, and actually buy them, because apparently they are worth it.

So, you are saying MBP owners SHOULD be looking at M4? I’m confused.

I agree. This is a hack for people who refuse to accept that Macs are expensive.
