This isn't the Apple of old - who usually announced a week or two before release at most. Its only been the Cook era where its the norm.

The Apple of old was also selling to a much smaller crowd than the Apple of today. I challenge Steve Jobs to see to it that Apple supply over 200 million iPhones in a single year, of manage the huge portfolio of products that Apple is selling today.

Apple will begin selling its AirPower wireless charging mat next month, according to Japanese website Mac Otakara. The publication has spoken to "reliable sources" who have apparently confirmed a claim made earlier in February by The Apple Post that the wireless accessory will go on sale in Apple retail stores sometime in March, although the specific date still remains unclear.

Announced by Apple in September, AirPower is an oval-shaped white charging mat featuring Qi-compatible networking technology that will allow it to charge multiple devices at once. Along with an iPhone 8, iPhone 8 Plus, or iPhone X, and the Apple Watch Series 3, the AirPower charges AirPods thanks to a new wireless charging AirPods case that's also set to be released sometime soon.

According to the original rumor, Apple intends to make the AirPower mat available to purchase concurrently at Best Buy and other Authorized Apple Resellers alongside its own retail stores. The Apple Post also claimed that in addition, Apple retail stores will stock the updated AirPods wireless charging case on the same day, although Mac Otakara's own sources make no mention of this.

Mac Otakara has connections to the Asian supply chain and Asian accessory manufacturers, making it a typically trusted source for Apple product rumors. That said, the publication does not have a perfect record and has shared inaccurate info on occasion, so it's best not to take the latest report as fact until backed up by other sources.

Right now our best guess is that Apple's AirPower wireless charging mat will cost around $199 in the United States, based on a price listing for the accessory that appeared on a Polish website in November.

By the time I find myself "needing" this I'll be able to buy it used for less than half of what it sells for new, more then likely. Even that will be more than your average Qi charger though, so I'm not sure I'll ever hop On board with this one.

Don't currently have AirPods, but if I did, I'm not sure how much I'd care about the wireless charge feature. I only use my earbuds for the gym and as it stands I charge their charge case about once a week. That's a lot of additional expensive for something I do so infrequently.

I'd be interested to see if third parties make a similar product down the road. My wife is generally able to get s steep discount on those.

In my view, wireless charging is a gimmick/fad. I'd much rather use a cable and get real fast charging using a 15W or higher-powered adaptor. That being said, I suspect most people may be willing to part with up to $50 for a wireless charger - but $200 is simply too much, considering an iPhone SE costs $349. I'd argue Apple has a tough sell on its hands at that price point. I also wouldn't put it past the company to deliberately under-spec the first iteration - meaning, I doubt it will fast charge all three (i.e., iPhone, AirPods and Watch) simultaneously.

Exactly. Apple Watch comes with wireless charger. New iPhones can be charged wirelessly on a less-than-$20 charger from Amazon. My AirPods case gets charged once a week at the most. No big deal to plug it in.

Can't see the reason to spend however much Apple is going to be asking for this.

No other technology can currently charge a smart watch on a wireless pad so technically this is new technology
There are already some charging mats available that work with apple watch. Just google it. It is not a new technology and charging similar dollars for something that is available for so many years is non sense to me.

No there isn’t

You won’t find any that currently work through the pad

You will find pads that use the current charging cable with a spare hole for the cable but not through the pad

It’s not going to be $200.

Wireless charging is a bit of a gimmick, especially when it’s so unreliable at the moment. I’ve lost count of how many times I’ve woken up with almost no battery because the phone wasn’t resting just so on the charger.

Apple is selling things like their own Apple Watch dock for $79, and Belkin's Qi chargers for $60-$120. This will definitely not be $99. Easily $149 (which I might pay), but probably $179 or $199 as expected (which I won't pay).

People are basing this on a placeholder listing on a polish retailer site from November last year. There is NO WAY a random overseas retailer would know the price on this product that far in advance. No retailer will know the price until Apple launches it.

It’s frankly ludicrous that MR is reporting it at face value.

I couldn't care less what the random polish website says, but based on the other chargers they sell I expect $179-$199

This will charge your iDevice better than any other charger on the market. It’s the best charger Apple has ever made.
As per his expertise, Joni made these chargers so advanced that electrons going though have been carefully tested and authorized by Apple in its special eLabs® - to be deployed on all continents.

That is modern Apple. Announce, wait, ship. With the wireless charging Apple is "late to the game" so there was no competitive advantage in announcing so far in advance of shipping. It was likely the smart thing to do, some people may wait to buy the Apple Airpower mat, instead of the competitor's product.
I do wonder why Apple couldn't ship at the same time as the iPhone 8 or X? The products that take advantage of it.

Yeah, similar to launching the iphone 7 without a headphone jack, then not releasing the airpods at the same time. Would've helped mitigate the backlash at the time.

This must absolutely be true . And here I was thinking that charging my devices was.....well.......just charging my devices?? I guess the proposed 7.5W power of the Apple Power pad will charge my devices faster than my Anker Quick Charge 3.0, 39W, PowerPort , just ordered for my iPad. .....don't think I'll wait for those magic Apple electrons.... or the tooth fairy

This won’t work for a series 2 watch correct? If not why not.
Completely different charging hardware in it. There were reports when the S3 first came out that it worked on a handful of Qi charging pads - I think this has since been patched out.

That’s isn’t what I wanted to hear. Disappointing to say the least. I would have gotten this immediately if it could charge my phone and watch simultaneously. AirPods are a bonus. The wireless case would be a great gift.

Guessing the case will still be 60-70and makes me wonder if it will be available separate or will come with the 2nd gen air pods.

Keeping in mind the report from a few days ago, I hope both. That Apple will unveil the new AirPods with „Hey Siri“ support next month including the new case and offer the case separately for those who want to keep the old AirPods.

But knowing Apple, they might just as well release the case now and the new „Hey Siri“-AirPods in 3-6 months time.

More money to make that way. o_O

I think from the sounds the 2nd gen air pods will be released in June/september time and the air pods wireless case will be out next month with the air power. They announced it together to chances are they will release both together.

I’m afraid you’re right. But I’d really hate that. Since the announcement, I’ve been holding out on the AirPods for the wireless charging case.
With the rumors now, I’d have to wait even longer until summer. And if the updated AirPods won’t be released then, up until autumn ... it’s just so ... argh.
