Just a word of caution on using third party batteries.. Make sure you do some research on what this can cause and what service options you have in the future. Many times I understand Apple will not repair any part of your phone for any reason if there is a third party battery.

I can confirm. In 01/2017 Apple saw my issue first hand as I restarted my iPhone from the battery I carried with me and it started back with 49% battery shown on indicator.
After doing their diagnostics they said battery was fine.
They would not allow me to pay for new battery.
This my anecdotal experience.
YMMV

Thank you! They refused to do anything with my wife's iPhone 6s+ too.

I’m a big Apple fan, but it sounds pretty cut and dried. I’ve got an electronics background so this makes some sense. Slowing down the clock rate will reduce the current draw, which will reduce the voltage drop under load. In a system with a failing battery, this could prevent the battery voltage from dropping so far that the system fails (and restarts).

While I don’t believe Apple would do this to be malicious or to sell more new phones, it looks to me to be good power management to extend the useful life of some aging devices.

On the flip side you could argue that this saves them from having to replace a whole lot of batteries.

I think what is really ticking people off is the fact that the 6s and 6s+ models had a defective battery that would shut off under 60% and exhibit some serious defective battery behavior. Instead of own up to bad batteries, Apple decides to mitigate the problem by reducing CPU frequencies so the bad batteries that can't supply voltage don't boot the phones.

Most who use the iPhone as a phone with additional benefits will see very little impact on their daily lives with throttling. A couple year old throttled iPhone still many times more powerful then one 5 or so years ago. If one needs the speed, heavy users, then either replace the battery or maybe now the time for an upgrade. The throttling a good cost affective way to extend the life of the iPhone. Cudos to Apple for that. The problem, Apple needs to be a bit more transparent about the upgrades in IOS, especially with iPhones two or more years old.

I agree that throttling is a good way to extend the life of a phone with a dying battery.

But: Users should be told and possibly have the chance to opt out.

Plus, by not telling people they give the conspiracy theorists enough fodder to keep them going for years.

What was happening after iOS11 and the 6s? IIRC the 6s was the only device with an extended Downgrade window, not sure if it’s still currently possible to go back to 10.3.3 but it does seem suspicious that the 6s was the only iPhone allowed to do this. It seemed to me Apple wanted 6s users to downgrade. Perhaps there is something to this reddit post. Regardless, it seems the 6s in general has been problematic for Apple.

CPU Frequency, then compare it against what it should be (e.g. 1850 Mhz for a 6S: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Apple_A9)

On my 7, I find that it'll report somewhat less than the 2340 Mhz it should be, which may be a factor of dynamic clocking or the low-power cores. But if I, say, run a game, then reopen the CPU Dasher, it'll report 2339 Mhz.

I have a 6S with a battery that only lasts ~6-8 hours, so i figured i'd be affected.

I get 902 Mhz... Thats less than half of what it should be. Is it possible the app is reporting the speed incorrectly? Because holy cow that's a massive throttle.

Yep - if they even think that a 3rd party vendor opened the phone they will refuse to touch it for any reason. My sister had her screen replaced by a mall vendor - and even though she had a different problem, Apple refused to do anything with it because of the screen replacement. (This was years ago). I think with screens they do something a little differently now but -- my sister's screen kept popping out again and again. 3rd party is really iffy imo.

I totally agree. The only reason I’m not really ticked off is that it didn’t happen to ME.

My iPhone 6 Plus is throttled from 1.4 GHz down to 600MHz.
Without me knowing that?
WTF?? Apple?
Look at the Geekbench scores below! It basically becomes a f**king unusable iPhone 5! And I miraculously tolerated it for over 6 months until I was eventually forced to switch to a new iPhone this year.

Before you say anything about my not replacing the battery, most of the time my phone is charged in my office, plus I have a decent portable charger if my battery goes too low, so I kept using the degraded battery in the 6 Plus.

How can Apple do this without telling us? Well I guess Apple always get away with their arrogance, hopefully not this time.

For me, using the 6 Plus during those 6 months was agony. Now I am deeply offended by the lack of transparency. Shame on you Apple.

not that much that i would pay 900$ for it. There are improvements, but minor.
Minor is not the correct word. The 7 was not that close to the top androids. This year the 8 and X are rated above all androids in stills. That's a major leap. $900 worth it? Perhaps not but that doesn't quantify the jump in quality.

I guess it does depend on the Apple store. I’ve had batteries replaced by paying the fee before with no issue.

I had my iPhone 6S Plus replaced TWICE because of battery issues. iOS 10 definitely caused the battery to drain. I have now had my replacement for 2 months, and the battery was great until about 2 weeks ago, where it started dying quickly again. I charge only with approved chargers, and don't abuse the battery. My habits haven't changed much at all since I have had the phone. I believe this is because of intentional degradation by software.

What if I told you, in an attempt to make more money, the GeekBench people changed the numbers people saw in order to stir up business to have people compare tests? Does it make more sense for Apple to do something under user's noses when they have more money than everyone or Geekbench, which is a company 0/10 people outside of viewers of this site (or ones just like it) know about.... Flash forward to a week and im sure CNN or whatever news channel you have says "according to Geekbench reports, Apple may be slowing down their older phones in order to save battery life..." BOOM! more business for GB...

Not the pixel 2...

Whoa whoa whoa. Hold on here. I need some clarification. There's a few articles talking about this. And so far all have said the performance gets throttled when a battery degrades over time. Meaning cycles, not a low charge on the battery.

But this article has red arrows pointing at the battery percentage. So are they implying the performance gets throttled as the charge on the battery gets lower??? Over the course of the day*
Yeah, skimming through this thread some seem to be confusing "depleted" with "degraded".

In any case, I'm happy if my phone stands a better chance of making it through the day. So if that's what Apple's up to here, then I'm good.

I would rather have full day battery life than more numbers in Geekbench. Apple did cool thing here, stop complaining.

Please explain: my iPhone 6S has been replaced a year ago, so it’s battery is about a year old.
Is is throttled to less than half it’s normal Geekbench score and very slow when using it.

How is this cool?

I agree. I would rather have a full day battery with a phone that is practically unusable because it's so slow. A full day of agony with a slow phone sounds like the better option to me.

I agree as well. Most people are more sensitive to battery life than performance. When people just use it for texting and scrolling. I promise you, a majority will appreciate longer life. This is coming from someone who loves the innovation of apples fast cpus.

Another internet over reaction.

May I offer some words of encouragement:

Let’s wait to hear what (if) Apple says about it. If they are throttling maybe it’s not for malicious intent. Maybe it’s to prolong the life of the phone over time. .

You can still purchase an SE and a 6s at store and online. So if they are doing it on purpose it would mean they are attempting to prolong the life. Not to force upgrades. That doesn’t seem to be inline with the thought of forcing people into newer phones. I don’t know, then again I usually don’t jump straight to malicious intent on most cases

Have apple run diagnostics (they can do that over the phone) and if the battery is at 80% or below it’s trchnically considered consumed. So if your battery is consumed and you’re experiencing performance issues then get your battery replaced. I don’t find it widely obsured to expect performance issues with a consumed battery.

Whether or not apple should be telling people about this or not is still a question. If apple was aware of it and did it intentionally to prolong battery life. Maybe they should have. If it was a product of a fix that had some side effects that are just now being discovered then that’s something they should be more careful in the future.

I already posted my findings with screen shots in the other thread, but here’s my experience:

I have two iPhone 6's one on ios 11 and one on iOS 9. Both are 2 1/2+ years old.

I’ve been having speed issues with the iOS11 iPhone. Once I read this article, I checked my Geekbench scores and found I got 1050 versus the 1400 or 1500 I should’ve been getting.

The iOS9 phone clocked in just fine.

I replaced the iOS11 battery and am cruising alone much better.

What’s behind this all, I have no idea, but the symptoms and cure seem to bearing out as positioned in the article.

Oddly, my new-battery iPhone 6 performs better now in low power mode than it did in regular mode with the old battery. Something is not correctly optimized with these older phones.

What is behind it is: “All rechargeable batteries have a limited number of charge cycles and may eventually need to be serviced.”

Some will say, put in a larger battery so we can have both battery life and performance. Aside from the fact you'll end up with the same issue, I think people have forgotten how toxic batteries are for this planet. We currently can't completely recycle batteries. Electronic waste is a real problem.

Apple is correct to do more with less. Batteries wise.

Just lol. My 6S is throttled to less than half the clock speed, it is less than a year old and displays no warnings. It is now SLOWER THAN MY OLD IPHONE 6!

How is it an overreaction to complain about this?
Is it normal for you to just reduce a devices speed to half after a year without telling anyone?
