Roughly a week after its initial release, iOS 8 is now installed on 46% of devices connected to the App Store, according to the latest numbers posted on Apple's App Store developer support page (via iClarified). The numbers also indicate that 49% of users are using iOS 7 while 5% of users are on older versions of iOS.

Earlier this month, Apple's analytics indicated that 92% of devices connected to the App Store were using iOS 7, while 7% were using iOS 6 and 1% were on earlier versions of the mobile operating system. In December 2013, iOS 7 usage was at 74 percent, which jumped to 78 percent later that month. In late January, iOS 7 usage was at 80% and then scaled to 85% in March.

iOS 8 was released last Tuesday and brought several new features like Continuity, third-party keyboards, interactive notifications and more. However, a number of users have experienced a variety of problems with the operating system's initial release, including irregular battery drain, slow Wi-Fi, app crashes, and more.

So 46% of "ALL" iPhones out in the world today are running iOS8 are they?

Are they really?

What do you think?

Wow! No other company could achieve this...Almost half of all users using the latest OS in under a week!

No half of the visitors to the App Store have been using iOS8 - No surprise really as everyone with iOS8 will need to visit the App Store to update the no longer working apps.

It's OK but it's buggy as hell.

I have the weird battery drain, the battery percentage does not show in the lock screen, Facebook app has become even more glitchy than usual (I never thought it was possible), and when you use a third party keyboard, then lock the phone without closing the app using the keyboard (messages etc), you can't use the keyboard again without coming away from the screen and back to it.

You'd think that with that long beta testing period, they would have cleared those bugs out. I don't remember iOS7 being so buggy when that was new.

Nope, as you can see, and as normal.

The BOLD Statement, you are falling for, and is stuck in your mind now is not true.
You need to understand what this figure means, and not take it on face value.

Precisely. The percentage is probably biased towards iOS 8. It is not a bad thing, for developers that percentage is absolutely relevant (they only care about App Store customers anyway), but it’s just not an indicator of the overall adoption of iOS 8.

Not bad seeing with iOS7 everyone wanted it and knew about it because of the new UI - look at IOS 8 nothing really changed UI wise (which aint bad as it looks great)

It's not apples for apples (excuse the pun). iOS7 was actually a much smaller update when it came to the actual architecture of the OS. It was mostly visual. The iOS8 update could be closer compared with the Intel switch back 2006. There's some huge under the bonnet stuff going on with it. You're right, it's buggy but the 8.01 release will be out fairly swiftly, I'd imagine.

Usually they calculated % of devices capable of running the OS.
I would bet they mean 46% of devices capable of running iOS 8 are actually running it. So in reality the number is much smaller if we count in iPhone 3GS and 4.

Look before you leap...

I've looked but I don't think I'll leap until at least the next update and only then after you lot have tested it for me!

What's the emoticon for smugness?

Still sitting on iOS 7 with my 5. Apparently there have been some mixed results and I do expect a bug release or performance increase from Apple soon. It should happen fairly soon, given that Health Kit and iCloud Photo Library were stripped away in the last minute. I assume they'll include some bug fixes in that future release. Not to mention that certain apps haven't gotten updated yet and some features require Yosemite.

No. There are older ios versions which cant get Into the app store at all.
There are also quite a few who dont log Into the appstore because there are lots of apps that dont Support ios 6 anymore.
Also there are a Lot of older people who didnt even create an Apple id.

This Chart only shows how the distribution is among users that are able to use the app store as it is without restrictions.

Possible, but the results would be very skewed at the moment, because anyone who upgraded to iOS 8 would go to the app store to download new versions of all their apps right now, while iOS 7 users wouldn't have any particular reason to go there.

screw it, develop for iOS 8. people with iPhone 4's need to upgrade anyways.

Very arrogant attitude. Software developers don't make snarky comments about people with an iPhone 4, they figure out the cost of supporting iOS 7 vs. the cost of not supporting iOS 7 (losing customers and cost to adapt to iOS 8) and make rational decisions based on this.

Imagine my software is used in a company that bought 1,000 iPhone 4 for their users a while ago. These phones work just fine, at least the majority. Do you think they should pay out more than half a million dollars just to please you?

Holding on to 7 until a lot of all those bugs are squashed.
Wondering what happened to 'It just works'?

I remember getting the first releases of Leopard and Lion and putting up with a lot of annoying bugs back then as well. People need to stop revising Apple's history. They made mistakes under Jobs as well.

I wonder how many in this percentage actually chose to download this update. It downloaded uninvited on 3 of my devices.

If it was such a great update Apple wouldn't need to do this ... forced downloads.

I'm reasonably happy with iOS 8 on my iPhone 5. I was pretty nervous about updating because of previous experiences but there've been no major problems or slowdowns. Of course I turn off the features I don't want like the new predictive word input.

This was not the case with iOS 6 on an iPhone 4 so things have improved. The power of mobile phone processors in the 5s and 6 is pretty amazing.
