What is it for? Some of the things Jason Snell mentioned on Gruber’s podcast (mostly around sports) didn’t seem very compelling. I can’t imagine many people will want to wear bulky googles to consume sports.
You assume it will be bulky.
Iʼve read that Apple has invested over $40 billion dollars in VR & AR — the price of $3000 seems reasonable, it could have been higher.

$1500 is the cost of production for the headset.
If they indeed using Micro OLED, $3k is actually very "cheap". A Micro OLED TV costs as high as $80,000. Obviously we want the price to be lower, but current technology limitation still play a role.

Because it isn't 5000 nits once the light reaches your eyes. There are lenses in front of these displays.
Somebody pays attention. Also, front lenses are used mostly for AR to compete with sunlight. With AR, nits is irrelevant since you see through the actual reality and only the overlay texts or " tiny widgets" will be rendered graphically. And you do need to be able to read the texts. Without high nits, that's impossible on daylight.

Is it just me who think this AR/VR thing isn’t that useful at all compared with the AI technology like ChatGPT? ChatGPT is already becoming an essential tool for me.
Is this a sarcasm? How do you know if it's useful or not... yet?
 
We will need optional Apple-made light filtering goggles to block out the reality headset.

Unless: My eyes, the Apple goggles do nothing!

2. That font just doesn't look right for some reason...
THIS IS THE PROVE THAT WE NEED THE XR NOW! Apparently you can only see those letters augmentedly.

micro LED TVs cost tens or hundreds of thousands of dollars. There is no such thing as a micro OLED TV.

You are right, there is no Micro OLED TV because Micro OLED is even more expensive than Micro LED - and it is designed to suit more tiny display rather than large tv screen.

Only a miniscule amount can be produced by Samsung technology at the moment, followed by LG next year. The silicon wafers needed to hold micro OLEDs aren’t available in mass quantities. It’s reported that one of the largest makers of these wafers, SK Hynix, only produces about 100,000 12-inch wafers per month, 30,000 of which it’s willing to dedicate to production of MicroOLED wafers. With most high-end TVs reaching between 65 and 85 inches, 30,000 12-inch wafers won't go very far.

Micro OLED puts tiny organic light emitting diodes on a silicon wafer. Doing so allows manufacturers to put thousands of them in a small group, drastically increasing the amount of pixels-per-inch of a display and boosting the brightness. Perfect for headset.

edit: due to the fact that it is extremally low yield, I would expect Apple to price much more than $3k until the production is able to satisfy demand. Maybe they will sell the first gen for $10k :eek:

There is a $1000 headset with microLED panels coming out later this year, though they have about half the display panel area, if this rumor is correct. That headset also won't be standalone and won't have eye tracking and face tracking.
But I'm sure Apple has significantly lower component costs than a startup.

MicroLED technology isn't really comparable to MicroOLED, in my understanding. MicroOLED is more expensive per area than a large microLED TV, but much cheaper per pixel.
 
I believe with the price point being rumored, it will definitely cater more towards developers who want to build their applications and tools before they finally release a cheaper and more consumer level device.
That would explain a WWDC announcement as well.
